Help needed

Hi myself and girlfriend want to start the emigration process. At the moment my dad lives in Perth I thought that would get me in no problem. I can now see that isn't the case. I'm guessing I am going to have to get a trade behind me as I don't have one at the moment. I'm 23 and just wondering if anyone has any ideas if it has to be a full apprenticeship I would need to do. Or would night school in plumbing for example around my current job be enough once I have the qualifications to get in. Also what are the chances of getting sponsored in Perth once I have the qualifications. If anyone could give us some advice of the best trades/process we would appreciate it.

Thanks

Chris

What are you or your girlfriend currently doing? There may be better options.

Sometimes trades are not the best way to go about things, and the hardest to get employer sponsorship for. For Skilled migration you would need equivalent to AQF111 and then 3 years f/t post qualification work experience. Going down an apprentice route - 5 years as apprentice than 3 years fully qualified work experience. Then you don't know how things will have changed with the migration requirements in that time.

Ok thanks for the reply. Currently my girlfriend is a nursery nurse with an NVQ level 3. I currently sell insurance . The timescale of the apprenticeship was worrying me to be honest and if you have any other suggestions that would be great.

Thanks

Chris

Hi chrisProbably your best bet is to contact a migration agent. They usually give you a free initial telephone call to see if they can offer you help with a visa/best visa option for you. If you check out threads on here you'll be able to find reputable companies that people on here recommend. Go Matilda seem to be popular. I'm in manc too and have chosen a company based in town called concept Australia. May be worth a try. Good luck, Caroline.

Hi caroline thanks for your reply. I actually spoke to a guy at concept but as i didnt have a trade he didnt want to know to be honest. i tried to ask his advice about things to do but pretty much said forget it lol. I think i will have to try somebody else. Just wondered if there were other ways in than having a trade.

thanks

Perhaps your girlfriend might be the better option? There are so many jobs out here for Nursery Nurses and Coordinators but she may need to get a further qualification to be eligible. It would certainly be quicker than you starting from scratch. Speak to a couple of Registered Agents to see if you have any options with your partner being the principal applicant. If this is the way forward, you will need to have a minimum 12 months evidence of your de facto relationship so that you can be included as her migrating spouse. Visa Bureau, Go Matilda, Concept and Visa-Go all have good reputations and will give you a free assessment. Send email inquiries to them all and see how you go. And if you are really keen on Perth, start saving!! Good luck.

Hi Chook thanks for the reply. I will certanly look into that option of my girlfriend being the main applicant. I just thought if it wasnt on the recognised trades list you wouldnt be able to use it. Would it be possible to go over on a 1 year working visa and try to get sponsored or the extra qualifications if needed whilst over there.

Thanks

That is actually a very good option. There are a lot of British/Irish girls employed in the Child Care industry and they are very well regarded. You will have family to stay with so that gives you a chance to get established without having a lot of funds to begin with. What a great opportunity. Go for it! (Still contact an Agent though, to establish if there are other options for you both.) Good luck. :)

Hi Chook sorry to keep pestering just 1 final question. Im guessing that childcare is quite popular over there with girl leaving school etc do you think they would waste there time sponsoring somebody if they could just employ an Oz citizen a lot easier?

thanks

Have a look at http://www.seek.com.au to get an idea of what jobs are available just now. Child Care under Education & Training came up with 126 positions in Perth and Regional Areas. There is a good cross section of positions so have a look at them to see if any suit the qualifications that your partner has. You will also get an idea of wages, which is helpful.

Sadly childcare/ nursery nurse is not on list and can not be sponsored. Nearest is childcare center manager which requires a degree. Perhaps looking through the sol list to see if anything is interesting with regards to retraining for you or g/f.

It would be a good idea to see what extra training is required to get to this level. Likely it can be done in Australia but it would be more costly to do it that way and you can only work for 20 hours a week on a Student Visa (except during holiday breaks). The better option would be to complete your studies to Degree level in the UK and then apply for a PR visa. Short of that, you know there is plenty of work on a WHV.

Ok thanks for the help and advice. It looks as if its going to be more of a long term thing unfortunately.

thanks

The guy that did our airport transfer when we arrived, who works for lets perth has come on a working holiday visa and is going to college here in the hope that on completion (I think it was carpentry he was studying) he will be able to get PR or sponsorship to stay, like you he currently has no trade. I was a bit jet lagged at the time so didn't listen to everything he was saying if iam honest but it was something along those lines.

Regards

Sarah

P.S is your dad Dave and is a painter?
