Thanks all Portlaunay- thanks for taking the time for your post. In answer to your questions we are going over there for a better life for our children and ourselves. We work to live so the professional thing doesn't matter as much but we still need to pay the bills to fund the lifestyle! Sorry to hear about the issues you have been having it must be very frustrating. It is what we worry about being out of work. Linda - no we haven't started the visa process it was just to go and make sure we like it before we take the plunge. We did plan to go and speak to recruitment agencies and maybe some banks as part of the trip. It seems also on the government's monthly reports that there are a lot of System Analysts applying at mo and we need at least 70 points to go through. This should be fine, I think we'll have 75 or 80 if I start teaching again. We just dont want to waste a lot of money on the visit (costed it as 4-5k) if there are no jobs. Dxboz- thanks for letting us know about Melbourne. We just don't fancy Melbourne. I think we'd rather just stay here. I know lots of people like it- just seems a bit to European looking plus there is a cooler climate. Thanks all - more thinking to do!

That sounds lovely, my concerns re Brisbane is the humidity, more creepy crawlies and its not on the coast. Though i guess the rainforests would be lovely and its not as flat as Perth or remote. Perth seems to rely on its oil and mining industry I worry what happens when that runs out! Ill need to do some research! Thanks

Thanks thats really kind... Maybe once we have our visas it will be different... You only need one job i guess. Might go see Brisbane too but really wanted to live in Perth! After all the thinking about it both my hubby and I had decided we'd like to give it a go. Oh well!

Hi Thanks for all advice about when to have a wee visit to Perth - was all excited about booking but just before we did we started getting vibes from people that there aren't really any jobs in Perth. My husband works in IT and it seems its who you know not what experience you have. Hays said we were more likely to get jobs on East coast but Perth just seems to offer exactly what we want. Sydney is far to expensive near a beach and not sure about Brisbane though it could be possible. Just wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts on this? It seems like Perth is slipping away from us! thanks

Thanks that really kind if you to think of us! Love the salary but apparently its not quite what he does, real shame ha!

Hello My hubby and I are planning on visiting Perth in May but are worried about the job situation for BI system analysts( SQL, SAS, BOB, Oracle) covering developing and testing. If the job market is dead we don't want to waste £4-5k on a visit. Just wondering if anyone works in this sector and knows if there are many permenant positions? Also are there any good contacts to make or specific agencies to contact? We were hoping he might be able to earn $90k + is this realistic? He has a good managerial position at the moment in the corporate sector of a major bank at the moment. Any advice much appreciated! Been looking on seek but it would be great to hear from people I Perth. Many thanks!

Hiya My husband and I and our 2 kids are planning to visit Perth this year to see if we want to emigrate. We can go in May or October but not sure which month is better. I know Oct is a bit warmer but our youngest would be 10months instead of 5 on the long flight...and id rather travel with a 5 month i think! But will May be warm enough to go in a pool if we rented a house with one? Please bear in mind we are from Scotland and it was snowing today! So we are used to a much cooler climate! Also would anyone fancy a bbq get together when we are visiting be great to meet folk who have made the move - would be in northern suburbs. Many thanks!

Thanks guys...i agree id rather have a pool than the beach if I had to choose. But for now we are putting things on hold as baby due soon. We can think about it again when we have a little less on! Besides in meantime the pound may improve a bit more or the oz dollar may drop - we will wait and see. Thanks all :-)

Thanks I know its good to be realistic though :-)

Hi Thanks for responing. Our budgeting is good as we have done a lot of research we budgeted for about $800 a week rent max. We comprimised on fligts home. Anyway what the general gist is from everyone is we cant really afford it an thats ok we just needed.to know either way. Bit sad but not willing to risk struggling so far away. Thanks so much for everyone who took the time to respond! :-)

Thanks for your thoughts. Im not driven by money but its important to know our family will not struggle to keep out of the red.each month. That would effect any quality of life for example if I would struggle to clothe my children..and no not in designer gear! Yes I would stay in the uk if that was the case. Its just sensible to check you can afford bills etc!

Hi Thanks again for your responses. Ok-so I have done my homework and we have done our budgeting...after taking out all costs and bills: - rent 3/4 bed with pool - childcare - utilities - car tax and general car payments - petrol - contents and medical insurance - internet/landline/mobiles - commuting costs - food We would have just over $1000 per month left for weekends/any days out/coffees/clothing etc and anything else that comes up. Any thoughts on if this would be enough left for a family of 4 including 2 kids under 4? We feel it may be a bit tight so we might not be able to afford to go to Australia. All thoughts welcome. Thanks

Hi Thanks for your replies. I understand what your saying and yes just as in the uk you need to borrow only what you can afford. But you've confirmed what I thought the banks do lend more. We dont want to live like kings lol..just not be stressing every month re bills for a nice family life not with a new bmw but somesort of reliable famly car! Maybe I should re-phrase my question...without going into specifics is there anyone out there or anyone who knows someone who has moved out to perth with a family and rents or has bought a 3/4bed house with pool in a good area maybe 10mins drive from coast and has a family income of 125k or less and is doing ok? My hubby and I are in process of doing our budgets at the moment but just as a general idea... Thanks :-)

Hi Thank you so much for the replies! Yes we will def rent first for at least a year. But 375k to buy isnt loads I thought it would be like the uk when getting a mortgage and you have to get slightly more than 3x? Or are they v strict with this.in oz? We'll def look over other threads it was just incase it there is a general level of salary for a family that you need..but I know it depends on lots of factors! Thanks again and for the welcomes :-)

Hello, My husband would love to move to Perth (probably Northern Suburbs e.g Clarkson, Quinns Rocks etc ) but I am slightly worried about cost of living. If we did go I'd want to buy a 3-4 bed house in a good area (i.e. for schools etc) with a pool, running one new-ish car and not be struggling every month. My husband would probably ear about $100K and if I worked it would be part time so about $25K per year. We have a two year old and another one on the way. Any ideas if this would be enough to cover bills and allow to save for flights home each year etc? Any thoughts welcome! many thanks
