just drove back from Broome, and tbh i wouldn't do it ever again, i drove from Perth to Newman and then on to port headland and then Broome, there isn't much to look at, and there is a fuel stop every 200 kms or so. Not really the kind of places you want to stay though. we did try and get a room for the night in Newman, $315 per night, so we ended up driving another 200kms north to Munjina roadhouse and got a room for $195. me personally i would fly and enjoy more time in Darwin. there really is nothing to see on the way up.

Will we be able to afford to live in Perth?
greensinperth replied to Russ and claire :)'s topic in Money & Finance
when i got here i was earning $70,000 and my rent was $470 a week, you can live on it but you won't have any spare for much else. you will get approx a $1000 a month from centrelink with 3 kids so that helps. -

TRA - making it easier for Tradies to work in Oz on arrival
greensinperth replied to a topic in Visas and Migration
just a quick update to this thread, the system has not changed and the vettasses you do in the uk is not acceptable here, it is only for visa application purposes and you will have jump through all the hoops to get your trade quals recognised, and believe me there are lots of hoops and they are not cheap. im an air con/refrigeration engineer and i've been here 3 months so far and it costs about $1000 a week to live here, thats without your trade expenses. as an air con engineer i had to get a letter from energy safety to allow me to apply for a restricted electrical licence, this took exactly 28 days, then you have to do a course which is one week intensive, costs around $2000 you will need to buy about $750 worth of books you will need for the week. they only run the courses about once a month for 25 people, so book early!! after you have passed that, you can then sort out your qualifications, but you still cannot work until you have all your papers in place. all the time you still need to live. there are no temporary licences granted that allow you to work. i can only speak for my trade, however the lads i've spoken to in different trades have pretty much say the same thing. i'm only posting this cos if i had of known i would probably have not bothered. -
we went with John Masons and they were excellent and wridgeways this end, just be aware that the AQIS charge is dependant on how much of your stuff aussie customs look through and how long they spend doing it, so i dont see how they can charge you in advance for this. we paid about $500 on a 20 ft container.

tayto crisps at woolworths $1.20 a packet -
hi, TRA is the place you need, i'm not having a great experience with them though, i have decided to go straight to the local college ( TAFE ) pay $ 600 and have an assesment of prior learning. it is an easier and cheaper option for my trade, which is air con / refrigeration. and for those tradies who are reading this and think your vettasess is worth the paper it printed on, it isn't. i spoke to them yesterday to find out my options and they informed me that i would need to do exactly the same test over here, for another $1500.

defo sausages, the skin on oz sausage is so thick, i found some lovely irish sausage at the butchers in Kingsley, but the skin was really thick. my young ozzie apprentice did buy me a chicken cheese sausage wrapped in breadcrumbs which was a new experience. -
Well i never thought the time would come that i could write this, We are flying out on thursday 29th march and i cant wait, I havn't secured a job yet, I am a Refrigeration/Air conditioning Engineer so i'm not overly worried about it just now, also i find it very difficult to get aus companies to respond to you if you dont live there. I don't really know what to write but we are sooooo excited and can't wait to get there.
