Candygirl
I would be really grateful if you could say how long it took you to get a rental over there. Our dogs will be in quarantine for 30 days so I have found a short term let for this period, but my OH is now saying perhaps that won't be enough time, so I thought I would do some research and ask you Guys who have been there, done it and got the T shirt to prove it:biggrin:. lozzachino
Are you coming with jobs? If so, 4 weeks is doable. Most places we gave seen are empty and therefore ready to go asap. If you can move within a few days they will snap you up. without jobs, depends how much cash you have to prove a rental. I asked an agent what figure they would look for if we didnt have jobs, and she said "any amount that shows you can cover the rent for a period of time" - you figure that one out!!! they also want lots of id, so try and get as much sorted asap. Drivers, medicare, bank cards, passports and visa grant, and a proof of address eg letter from gvt body, as you wont be able to have utility bills or lease agreements until you have a rental! I doubt very much if we would have secured employment before we leave. My husband has employers who have expressed an interest in him, but have said to contact them just before he leaves. I am intending on contacting employment agencies in the CBD as I wish to temp to begin with, but they will not supply a reference until I have worked for them. We would move in the same day if we needed to. There are just the two of us and our two dogs. I am not sure how much of our savings we will transfer to begin with, but we could certainly prove that we had enough savings to pay 6-12 months rent if needs be. I am intending on opening a bank account before we leave, so should be able to collect the cards upon arrival in Perth. Medicare, we have been registered with them previously, but I suspect as it was a long time ago, we would need to register again and cannot do this until we arrive. I am collating character references from people both in Oz and the UK who have known us for years. I intend to include our mortgage statement for the last 8 years as well as a reference from a previous landlord who we rented from previously. OH has a uncle in QLD who has said he is happy to do whatever we need him to do to help us. Do you think we could obtain something from him which would help us? lozzachino
If you have enough saving to cover living expenses and rent for 6 to 12 months i think you will be fine!!!! Dogs may prove a challenge but there are properties out there that take pets you may just have to do some leg work as it will be harder. you cant have personal references from family members but if they have a different surname and the agents dont ask what the relationship is you may get away with it, have spoken to people who have done that. fifi69
30 days should be fine enough Lorraine. rental market has dropped off quite a bit IMO . Not as many people at home opens and prices seemed to have steadied out a little bit too. ive two friends looking at the mo, and funnily enough one of them has just secured a house that they went for but Didnt get this time last year, plus its $100 pw cheaper this time round!! im not saying no one is struggling to get, it's just no one I know has had any probs lately. good luck Hun, nearly there:jiggy:

Bibbs
Plenty of rentals allow dogs. If you have any references from rentals abroad, have them to hand. If you've sold a property, get a statement from the estate agent stating your house was in great condition and looked after. Otherwise have friends pretend you rented with them and get character references. We looked at an apartment (dogs had to be under 10kg) on a Thursday afternoon, the wife bugged them almost hourly till they gave it to us on the Friday. You can do the bank in an hour. Remember to take all your ID that you have to hand. Drivers licence was 30mins, medicare was some forms and post them in (I think). Be prepaired for job agencies to be rubbish and slow. We were going to move a couple of years ago(from Melbourne) and there was hardly any rentals unless you went away out to one of the new estates, and there was always loads of people at the same house opens, we kept meeting the same people at different houses. Gave up in the end. Planning to come over before the end of the year so hopefully be easier this time.
vickirelocationspecialist
Hi, I am a Rental Agent here in Perth and specialise in locating, viewing and securing properties for my clients, whether they are coming for overseas, inter state or already living here and simply don't have the time to go through the rental process! as long as you can prove you have sufficient funds to cover you for approx 6 months, there won't be a problem. The dog is not an issue, I secure properties for clients every week that have pets! As someone previously mentioned, having sufficient ID and providing the relevant information is crucial! Regarding timescale I would work on a 4 week basis, usually you will secure a property sooner than this, but its important to allow suffificient time. It is important to be aware there is a 100 point ID system for rental applications here and it is non negotiable with the Real Estate Agents! Please feel free to contact me if you would like more information or advice. Edited June 23, 2013 by ali
