Perth Northern Surburbs

Recommended Posts

Depends if you want to live in little Britain or not, nothing wrong with that if that's what you want. We didn't so went east to the hills, very nice for what we wanted. I work with 2 English guys, one lives in Kinross nd one in Ocean Reef, both describe as Blackpool in the sun, don't know how true that is. From what I can see large numbers of English new arrivals want to live in the northern suberbs.

Hi, we're due out in 8 weeks and are interested in living far from the maddening crowd, so to speak, are rentals cheaper where you are etc, thanks

We chose the hills for many reasons one of in the earlier post I made. Not near the beach if that's what you want, 40 mins I guess but forests, national parks, fewer people, lots of open space and much more of a village feel which we like. We first rented in Kalamunda which is lovely, has all you need, couple nice resturants and couple pubs, similar to rentals elsewhere price wise then we bought in Helena Valley 10 mins out of Kalamunda. Quite a mix of nationalities there Aussies, some English, Irish, Scott's but not anywhere near the numbers you will find up in the northern suberbs. I've visited most of the suberbs up north for work, my opinion, and most definitely someone will come along to disagree, houses close together, small blocks and vast numbers of English, as I said, if that's what you want because its familiar go for it. If not look south or east to the hills. Have a look at posts on here over the next couple of weeks, the number of people looking to move north will vastly outnumber those looking south or east. East will give you easy access to CBD, for us drive to station, park for free, train in 20 mins ish and $4 each way

Hi Rob.

We're quite interested in some of the Eastern suburbs and are considering the likes of Greenmount, Swan View and Jane Brook. Do you know what the amenities are like in these areas (shops, restaurants etc) or do you have to go into Midland for those? Not bothered by schools as we have no kids!

What is Helena Valley like? Have heard of it but not seen much info?

Thanks!

I am moving to Perth next month and would like to know the best surburbs to live north of Perth City Centre and with close proximity to the train station and with excellent Nurseries and Catholic Primary Schools.

I know it is your first post and so will be as gentle as I can...... However you are coming out in a months time and you have not worked that out yet by yourself? This site is packed with all the answers to your questions, links to relavant websites and other information you will need to do the research. Suggest you have a really good read through of the site, or another read through if you have done it once, and just take it all in. Then go to a map and match the information to what you see. A train station, a Catholic School and matched against what subrub you can afford is not that hard to work out. Is it or I am just being an ar*e here by stating the obvious? Well somebody has to do it......

Don't know much about Swan View, went to look at a car there once, it has a shopping centre off the Main Street and on the Main Street bakers, coffee shop etc., and a pub with a TAB. Sorry, never been to Jane Brook. We looked at a house in Greenmount, very nice older houses on big blocks some semi bush, don't think there is any newer stuff there in any great numbers. There is an IGA, butchers and a chemist together on the main road and a petrol station. If you are in Greenmount you are only a few mins out of Mundaring which has everything you would need, only thing I can think of not there is Bunnings but big one in Midland. Mundaring has a few resturants and coffee shops etc, supermarkets, bakers and all the usual stuff. 5 mins out on the road to Kalamunda is Mundaring wier with picnic spots, free bbq's etc and there is also a pub at the wier that has concerts now and then, and the open air cinema open in the summer, take your fold up chair, picnic and a bottle of wine and watch the movie, weekend evenings only I think

Most suburbs will have corner shops, some will have small resturants. But if you want choice you'll end up in a "big" suburb.

A guy I work with/for lives in Jane Brook. It appears to be a nice area. Views of the hills, big blocks, fairly quiet.

jane brook is really swan view , its close to the john forrest national park , your nearest shops would be morrison rd or the small swan view shopping centre , if you were after restaurants you could go into midland , or 5 mins further into guildford , and your not all that far from the swan valley.

greenmount and swan view are close 5 mins apart really so your looking at the same area , be aware that guildford and greenmount are under the flight path and you can count the rivettes on the planes some days .

helena valley is nice i bought a block there years ago , there is the private estate and there are the outer lying blocks of helena valley , i beleive there is a small shopping centre there now , again you can get to midland in minutes from helena valley ,

boya is also nice tends to be the forgotten suburb .

i lived around these parts for years , but ended up moving near the ocean for the cooler weather in the summer [ the heat kills me **

check out darlington nice little village like atmosphere ,also look at glen forrest , neither of them are that far from greenmount hill.

Yes forgot to mention Helen's Valley, IGA ,chemist, bakers, coffee shop etc at the centre on the private estate, been into several houses there all about 10 years old and are on larger blocks than the new builds now. Other end of the valley( our end ) is a primary school, medical centre and " sweet treats ", coffee shop/ chocolate/ cakes/ sweeties etc. off the roundabout where the school is are several older roads with houses on larger blocks, no through roads so little traffic, very quiet spot, suits us

Wow moirclan that is a large plot!! Most of the ones I have looked at (that we can afford and aren't "the dream") are around 800-900sm.

Thanks for this info guys its great. I have really struggled to find out info that's more that just the basic stats about the Hills area. Everything is so focused on being SOR or NOR that there isn't much out there about the hills. Although that's not necessarily a bad thing ;-)
