I was wondering if you guys could be of some help,i have been in australia for just over 4 weeks now and to be honest thought i be working by now but finding it harder than i thought, hopefully things will pick up etc.

Back in the uk i was the only parent working and i got child benifit for my daughter who is 11 months now,i cant remember how it worked in the uk if everyone got it or just under a certain wage.

I know when your new to australia you dont get any help on being out of work, but im sure i have been told many times that you go get payments towards or help in bringing up your child, can anyone tell me to get this do you need to be earning a wage or if not earning a wage what can i apply for.

I have a pr visa my wife and baby has temp visa until granted after 2 years of being here, still get the same benifits as me with medicare etc just instead of a 5 yrs card with medicare she gets 1 yr and has to renew after that year. But she is linked to my medicare as a family.

I had my visa before i met my wife and before we had our baby,So what im asking is do we get any funds help in bringing up our child after just arriving here and can anyone tell me what i can apply for and get,i just am unsure and anything would help.

Our child is not registered for Immunisation yet but i believe this maybe needs done before we can apply for it,which i have asked a place about and said we can do it there.

Anyway info, help on the above i would be greatfull of.

Agree with others, speak to centrelink. Not sure if you will be able to claim for your daughter if she is not on a pr visa, but centrelink are quite helpful and will be able to tell you. Get to the centre early otherwise the wait can be fun!

if you can claim, i assume it will be family tax benefit, part a and b, and if you have a lease agreement already then the rent assistance as well.

Hi, We moved here on PR with our kids but our daughter was born after it was granted. We applied for child migration visa for her instaed as this is the only way you can claim full benefits here for child care, medicare etc. This is what centrelink told us anyway! The majority of family benefits state you have to be a resident of the country for over 2 years. The only one we have found is the Family Assistance Payment Rates and Assistance for child care. It is worth speaking to centrelink as your predicament is different to ours, the best time to phone them is after 5 as most people think its closed then. Theres not much point going in as they will hand you a heap of forms and tell you to look online and fill out the necessary forms there! Good luck and all the best

Hi,

We are on PR visa and have a 6 year old daughter that was born in the uk and we get centrelink payments. I thought we would have to wait 2 years but this isn't the case and it was back dated until the day we arrived. I think at 5 they will be in pre primary, our daughter is 7 in Jan and is in year 1. I think it will depend on when in the year they are five I think the cut off date is 1st July, so if not pre primary they will be kindy.

Thanks Sarah, most useful. So did you guys just contact Centrelink on arrival and get ball rolling that way?

You can do it all online once you are here then you just have to take some docs into centrelink we had to take proof of visa, proof of daughters birthday (passport or birth certificate is ok) and our rental agreement - depending on income you get rent assist too.

glad to be of help

Hi Jon & Sarah. Do you know how much savings you are allowed to have before you qualify for rent assistance? We are coming over with our savings and it concerns me slightly how long they will last.

They didn't ask me how much I had in savings just how much my rent was and what my husbands income was. There is a calculator on centrelink website which gives you a rough guide as to what you can get.

Hey guys i started this thread and a while ago by the looks of it.

Well finally arrived here start of june 2013,thinking i would easy get a job as loads advertised and having worked here once before when i was traveling 10yrs ago, thought no worries.

Well after spending a bit of money getting here and also shipping our stuff over and still needed bits and bos when we get here, getting a car and looking for rental which i must say was found very quick it sure did take a hit in the savings.

Time has passed and been pay rent and day to day things, shopping baby stuff you know what i mean, thinking just after arriving all is good get a job soon enough, well first it was end of finance year so slowed things down and then its was change of goverment and then xmas and new year coming up where does it end.

And then finding out the down turn in my line of work, companies holding back delayed jobs etc etc.

Anyway to cut a story short been here end of this month will be 8 months and not found a job yet and 2 months before i came here to get ready for the move, packed in my job in uk so coing up to 10 months without any money, just living off saving and yes thats taken a big hit.

I looked into family assistance but never bothered i knew i could apply and know that people possibly better off than me at this moment sometimes get it also depending on there wage.

I just only start to get something and they called me the other day asking what i earned in the uk,Why as im in oz not uk now.

I said i have no proof, wage slips etc so they asked for approx and just gave them a rough figure, could have said anything really.

I claimed for backdated money from last finance year and upto now on this new finance.

I wanted to know does everyone get the same or does it depend on what you earn etc, when i applied it asked approx what i can/could earn i was unsure as not made anything yet and just took a rough guess there is a possiblity i could make much more than what i quoted them depending on job or where i was to work,or could be about right or less if out of work more.

As for wife i never had her as anything as she is looking after bub.

If we all get the same what is that payment and is it every two weeks?

I did here that if i make over a certain amount in that year i might get stopped as in not qualify for payment is this right,if so what?

And when do they factor in paying them money back when does this kick in,how would you know maybe your owe money back, how is this worked out.i was going to opt for end of year payment but i feel the money be more usefull now.

Ok i did not come over here to sponge off the goverment, far from it,hardly ever in the uk and was always in work, but its not my fault that im finding it hard to get anything as yet over here, might be due to not having an australian qualification which is not recommend but im starting to thing now would be in my favour.

Ok im not getting unemployment benifit as you need to be here 2 yrs for that,so just carry on living off savings and hope things get better if not then may have to consider going back home, dont want that but never hardly been out of work back there and its so slow here.

My other questions as im in a rental we all know how expensive this is and it sure puts a dent on the saving each week to the point where if things go on the way they are money will go,i got the rental showing what money i had taken with me,but buying a few things after the rental including a car sure took it down a bit and the agent said to me i see you not got a job.I said that right but have a few contacts to get me work, but as you can see i have enough money to pay for rent etc,i thought not having job would be against us in the getting a rental.

Anyway i got a letter from centrelink about rental assist and it asks for myself and im sure agent to fill in,im not sure if i get anything or not but really did not want to get agent involved,as the ;ess she knows the better but looks like for me to apply for it she would be,as we live our rental and said we be in work soon which has not happened,i would hate for them to take a negative approach to us.

Should i ask them to fill in the form and apply for it as it sure would help, but i do have money to tick us over a bit more, but the way i see it if there is help there for us then why not take it.

I know that if and when i finally get the job etc then they probably stop anyways,so has anyone claimed rent assistance and how long after you came, what did your agent think about it?

I m hoping this year all starts to fall in place.

Sorry to hear things aren't going so well for you. I was wondering whether you have asked for any honest feedback as to why you're not getting anywhere on the job front. It sounds as if the reasons being given are just to fob you off and aren't actually very helpful to you. I notice your written English isn't perfect, and that may be because you're writing on this forum and write better in a job application, although, of course, without knowing what you do for a living and whether it is the written application which is causing you an issue, it is difficult to comment.

I don't know the answers to questions you raise regarding what you can claim but hope that if you can get some constructive feedback your luck changes.

Hi there,

We have just been granted our visa and both hope to head out with our kids in September (aged 2years and 8 months). We are both social workers and my husband hopes to work full time, whereas I would like to work part time and keep the costs of child care to a minimum. Can anyone offer any advice about benefits that we could possibly be entitled to? Are there any help with child care costs? Also what are costs like for nursery placements?

Thanks in advance :-)
