Do you have to have a home phone line to use a wifi modem?

Hi all,

I am getting overwhelmed by all the information online regarding wifi and would really just like a simple answer if possible. Can I get wifi in my apartment without a phone line? I would just like a wifi modem and would like to keep the cost down. There are so many plans out there, as well as conflicting answers! I'm so confused! Obviously if I need a phone line then I'll get a phone & wifi bundle but if it is possible without then I'd prefer that....help!?? Thanks :)

No! You can get a modem when you arrive and pre pay for usage. We got a modem from optus for $79 and it included 5gb. Then you can pay around $80 for 8gb. Or if you have proof of employment switch to prepaid contract and pay by direct debit. We switched and its $35 a month for 9gb, much more reasonable!!!! They said we can cancel anytime with no fees but im not sure how that can be! There is another contract option thats even cheaper but its a definite 24 month contract and you pay fees to get out of it if you want to cancel or switch.

there are other deals out there so compare providers. Virgin are reasonable too. Telstra very much more expensive but they are all 4g networked now.

Sure

Telstra (fastest, best coverage, not the cheapest)

contract - http://www.telstra.com.au/internet/mobile-broadband/plans/telstra-mobile-broadband-freedom-plans/?tc=G|E|D|BP|BPMBB|BrandTermsKWTelstramobilebroadband&mqp=sn4YkQYXA|dc_24760675343_telstra%20mobile%20broadband_e

(You'd need the Telstra Mobile Wi-Fi 4g device)

Pay as you go (prepaid) - http://www.telstra.com.au/internet/mobile-broadband/prepaid/devices-and-starter-kits/#tab-4g-wifi

or

Optus (not quite as fast, not quite as good coverage, probably cheaper than Telstra)

contract - https://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/mobilebroadband/e5776/wifi

Pay as you go (prepaid) - https://www.optus.com.au/shop/broadband/4Gprepaiddevices/E5776

Vivid wireless (don't know much about vivid, but I've seen them mentioned a couple of times, I'd defiently check the coverage area @ http://www.vividwireless.com.au/how-to-buy/map)

Contract - http://www.vividwireless.com.au/plans/wireless-broadband-plans

Looking for a contract definately (we shouldn't have a problem, we have been here a few months, have mobile contracts and rented an apartment etc). I don't mind a 24 month contract either to be honest. Is 9gb a lot of data? (sorry, I'm clueless!!) We use our mobiles for internet whenever we're at home (2 of us) for mostly social networking or reading news websites etc (probably about 2hrs a night and more at weekends) and also I use Skype about twice a week, normally for 40mins(ish) a time - Is 9gb enough for that useage? Thanks :)

Yes should be enough, we skype about three times a week, up to an hour each one, use facebook, upload pics, email, browsing. Dont download too many things or watch tv online, but when we used to do it at home we still managed on 10gb a month. Oh and we have a laptop and 2 ipads. We are on the 9gb package. We found we were using about 1gb a week and that included applying for about a million jobs a day!! :)

I'd suggest if you are not a gamer, that Vivid is the best bet.

Free international calls (which is a massive bonus), unlimited data (I'm downloading almost 100GB a month).

and no need for a land line, so you can take it with you.

The bad side is, if you are not in a signal area, it can be non existant or very slow speeds.
