portlaunay
I've read a few posts recently that say positive things about PP, mainly that it's a friendly place. But, for those who are new, what are your first impressions? For those who've been around a while, what keeps you coming back? Any improvements you'd like to see? Do any of you recommend this place to others?
Redsquare
The success of this site and the reason I come back here is due to the people who come on here. There's almost always a friendly, helpful atmosphere where people are happy to give advice and encouragement. PIO, although similar does have its fair share of arguments and more cynical members. PP has also been an important tool in our preparation for our move and a great reference for any questions we've had. What would I like to see on here? More pictures please. ROB T
PP has been both a helpful and friendly place for me and a site to where I choose to refer for balanced advice. Members experiences and opinions are always important, you may not always agree but they are invaluable all the same. Agree with the above; there was a fairly recent thread which invited postings of pics, perhaps a bump is in order to restart interest. Everyone likes pictures of Perth, particularly those still in the UK at the visa application stage.

Bobopaulsy
Oh yeah and to meet people who have been through or are going through the same as me.......all great so far and I certainly don't mind the odd debate or different opinion ..... Mods keep up great work
murray146
Like the above posts, I find it an invaluable source of information re. Visas, accommodation, employment, lifestyle, etc. An abundance of helpful people, with a few nut jobs thrown in! :-) I would like to see a better 'search' facility for the main area of visas/skills assessment. For example, i have seen some excellent posts on here from nurses/midwives explaining the process to go through re ANMAC and AHPRA but they would take such a lot of time and effort to find. The Frets
Joined PP awhile after we had arrived, mainly to make friends, it was a great start, unfortunately some of the friendships went very pear shaped but some have stood the test of time. And I always try to help where I can, as I understand how hard it is to leave the familiar and try and start in a different country. I sometimes have a break and then come back, I'm pleased with how it is, not many heated discussions which is a big reason why it has begun to become more popular than some of the other sites the have founded. Well done PP keep up the good work.
jamesw
99% of this forum is great. There is a 1% of it I don't like, so not enough to air on a public forum! Leave it as it is!
elfie
I found it by accident when looking into our temp move to the other side of the world. I found it informative some people gave solid answers and advice into the inane queries I made. Both my husband and I took on board the answers and then made our own minds up. I would like to add thanks for your patience. A year on and the same questions are being posted by others looking into the huge life change in the move to Australia, I just hope everyone is as patient a year on with the repeated questions. I have found it to be a friendly place and for me there does not seem to be any animosity within the postings. As for friendships met a few people from here I take 2 of them Ive met to be friends. I find that friendships are not easy to make here for myself seem to fall in the wrong age group category to meet people. Oh and plus I am tolerated hahaha:laugh:
Admin
What do you like about PP? The fact that it generates less 'Reported Posts' than all our other sites.
Russ and claire :)
I don't post often but I do come on here daily via tapatalk and it's a much friendlier site then pio, if I have any questions then I always post here first as the replies are nice and informative
ali
I like PP because it's Perth specific, it's friendly and as much as I love our big sister (PIO) I do like the absence of a CTF section on here, there's no grandstanding and I think that members are able to post about the good and bad things of migrating, living in a new country etc., without being shot down or having to apologise for it - that for me is very much down to the membership we have on here (so thank you). I can't contribute to the visa questions as it's been a long time since we got ours and the rules have changed so many times - but I do enjoy reading peoples journeys wether it's coming here or returning to the UK or another place. portlaunay
I like this place because it feels a little like an extension of my immediate community. I think our journey here was atypical and, similarly, I have always felt my perspective is very different to most. I'm not a social hand grenade or anything, I'm allowed out in public and everything but I certainly feel I can express my opinion here in a way that will not be lambasted, derided and (hopefully), no one takes offence. Though please say if this is not the case. I also enjoy helping others. I'd like to think that what I say is of benefit to someone and whilst I'm no expert I have a lot of life experience. It used to annoy me slightly that the same questions came around, mainly about the process of getting here and little for the community who are here already, after all, this is called PerthPoms, not NearlyPerthPoms. That does seem to be changing a little and I think that's for the better; there are more threads for residents these days and not in a way that alienates the non-residents. That's great because hopefully when people do arrive they'll remain active members and continue to contribute. I also like the people, the core community if you like - SttP, JamesW, ali, pea, verystormy and loads more I can't think of. We're all pretty different and don't always agree but I look forward to reading the opinions of others.
StraighttothePoint
The honest answer is because I first started to use this site, and some others, to try and find staff. So I did not so much like the site as used it as a tool. Over the years though I have got a bit attached to PIP, and like Porty, would like to think that my 55 years has a bit of experience in it, and if shared, others many want to help themselves to the good bits and ponder over the bad bits. Also like Port a Loo it was getting really annoying having to read the same repetitive questions but then I realised that not everyone is the same and just need a bit of TLC to get them over the line. Instead of leaving the site, which I did consider, I decided to try a different tact and created my own budget sheet and general information sheet that listed the key websites to visit. I have over the last six months or so being offering these to anyone who wanted them. When I send them out I try to suggest that they read them over, read the site thoroughly and then come back with more targeted questions. Hopefully in a small way this has been of value. The site has helped my business because we employed two senior staff, who both now earn $200k pa plus, and been able to help others with CV related questions who in turn have kept in touch once they have established themselves in the Perth IT market place. (We are change management consultants who provide PM and BA services.) Downsides, not many to be honest. One thing that annoys me is that there a few users of this site, no names, who continually ask questions but never say thanks or come back on and say how they got on so that others can learn from their experiences or findings. The two way interaction is important but I guess these few do not see it that way or are just too caught up in their own lives to think. I have just stopped answering or taking part in any of these threads if these few have been the original posters. And to end. I wonder how many of us would actually get on face to face? It is interesting how valueable this site has become and how well behaved everyone is, I have my moments of course. Would we all get on though if we were not using the keyboards?? Now there is a thought...... Edited July 14, 2013 by StraighttothePoint
portlaunay
Also like Port a Loo Do you know, that seems such an obvious alternative but I've never considered it that way (ba****d). Incidentally Portlaunay is the name of a beach on Mahe and I have some great memories there. Not only have you spoilt my name but the vision of paradise too, (double ba****d). I wonder how many of us would actually get on face to face? It is interesting how valueable this site has become and how well behaved everyone is, I have my moments of course. Would we all get on though if we were not using the keyboards?? Now there is a thought...... I think the same. I've only knowingly met a couple of people from here and I've no desire to rush out and meet more. It's not that previous experience has been bad, just that I enjoy this kind of relationship, why change that by meeting?
Candygirl
I like PP because it is relevant to WA and I think if you have decided on WA, you want a proper opinion. I also really like PIO, but there are those that really don't like Perth and hijack threads when people just want info on WA, so sometimes information can get lost, so prefer PP for that. I do tend to post more on PIO, but I think that is because we are still getting there. I believe once we are in Perth, we will prob use PP more if we have any questions. At the moment, I find out lots of info, but feel I cannot give much back at the mo as we are not there, but hopefully I can repay the favours once we arrive. Mods, really like the way things are tbh. While the default forum search isn't the best in the world, the advanced search isn't too bad. However, I've just added a google search button (top right below the default search box) which members may find preferable and may produce better search results.
