Nikkis2000
I just wondered what the general consensus is when booking flights as to whether it's worth buying open returns rather than one-ways for when we move over? We're not necessarily planning on returning particularly quickly, but thought it might be a cheaper alternative to buying a one-way and then having to pay more expensive return flight fares from Oz if we wanted to come back to visit. We thought it might also be useful to have a ticket ready and waiting just in case of emergencies. Any thoughts? N x
Candygirl
I wonder whether people would use the one way if things got tough, knowing it was there:biggrin: There is a lot to be said for booking a return ticket. We have paid £630 one way and have just booked the Wrinklies return for £735 in February.
DyLeB
Most people book one way flights, and take use of some of the Airlines double baggage allowances, which can be more useful and cost effective than a open return. Do you have the information regarding IMO in your grant info, worth contacting them get quotes on one way flight and they will sort out the double baggage allowance for unvalidated PR visa. Hi DyLeB, I just contacted IMO, they have quoted 40kg baggage allowance each. How did you manage to get double?

N x First thing is that a return flight will have, in many cases either a 6 month or 12 month maximum in terms of usage for the return leg so not sure what you term "not planning on returning particularly quickly" in terms of timescales. Also it will depend on circumstance I guess and how you want to live your lifes. If you, like me, wanted to return every year then it makes sense to come out on a return ticket and then every year buy another return ticket in the UK, much cheaper. Part of the coming out to Perth, for me anyway, included planning a longer term lifestyle. Many people probably will read this and think why, we are here to live permanently, but as with everything in life we are all different and therefore do different things. Nikkis2000
Thanks both. Good to hear both sides as that was why we were a bit torn! Have to say though that the double baggage allowance swung it for me!!
StraighttothePoint
Emirates 30kg as standard...... Good given all the other airline policies.
Levi
I'd like to find out who/what is 'IMO' ? Also is this double baggage allowance valid from the very beginning of the flight, say Hungary-'stopover'-Perth ? Thanks!
Lou8670
Just wondering... We are validating our PR visa in October on a return ticket. Does this mean we can't get the 40kg allowance as we are on a return ticket and when we book one way we will have already validated?

Once you get grant letter, the contact persons email address will there, email the dates that you wish to travel on and they will email back dates and prices. It usually has to be a unvalidated PR visa - not sure if a 489 provisional visa would be able to get the extra allowance.

You might be able to - but Singapore airlines for example are very strict on the Unvalidated PR rule. Other options for extra allowance is emirates - as get 30kg as standard, or BA for example can buy extra bags for standard rate of £32 each bag. Are IOM's prices comparable to those we can get on the internet?
Nikkis2000
Hi Levi, I'm not sure the price of the flight is much different, more that they give you the baggage allowance. Happy to stand corrected though I'd anyone knows different. N
