portlaunay
It is for everyone. That is a big hit Bugs. The other increases today are also hard. Elec and water up. Public transport up. We are progressing with our PR and hope it comes through before Jan but if it doesn't or we are unsuccessful that will be such a significant drain on our resources that I don't think we'd be able to manage unless I look for a more senior position, a solution that seems extremely unlikely. Guest guest9824
It got us here, but it's just such a debacle now it's lost it's shine!
portlaunay
I think it has likely been abused in a number of ways but there are still those for whom it provides mutually agreeable benefits. I'm talking of course from our own perspective. Whilst Mrs portlaunay's role is on the SOL her employer is a very small business. At the time the position was advertised the owner was about to go on mat leave and simply couldn't wait for a PR visa to be processed. My wife's input has been positive and their business strategy includes her long term involvement so her employer is keen to sponsor our PR. Please advise how the 457 has questionable validity under these circumstances?
Den & Jin
Elfie..... I'm on a 457, with 5 kids in tow!! I am very well paid, pay sh1tloads of tax each week and get naff all back from this increasingly backward country!! i refuse to pay $20000 in school fees!! my employer this evening said we are going for PR.... Soon as! if I leave... It will mean 6 young Aussie apprentices will be made redundant..... Pointless visa is it????!!!!! Guest guest9824
I think it's not a pointless visa as Porty clearly points out in his own scenario. it's just a very unfair visa In some cases. i think there are calls made to get rid of it because its caused so many problems for some people...and a lot of people have invested a lot and lost a lot on this visa, that's a reality for some, but not all...there are positive outcomes as well. Alan&Cat
< here on 457 also for us it was never a forever thing sorry have to disagree Well exactly. Not everyone who comes here's plans to stay forever. 4 years is a nice timeframe for some. And it gives employers an opportunity to bring people in, in a relatively short timeframe, that they wouldn't be able to find locally. Different visas fit different people
Kinetic
It may only be a matter of time before all states implement this. NSW already do. If I had ended up coming to Perth, the timing of that announcment would have been a kick where it hurts! Be interesting to know if the fees are tax deductible. If not, I would have needed to have earned another $15k to stand still. Edited August 8, 2013 by Kinetic

Kinetic
..true dat It is indeed, and whilst it has worked for some employees, the main beneficiaries have been the employers which, I would imagine, is as intended. The fact that under some circumstances, it provided a route to PR was a bonus to those who wanted to stay. As has been said many times before, if you go to Oz on a 457, you have to do it with your eyes open and understand the risks.
verystormy
Ultimately. If you are on a 457. You are not a PR and not on any route to PR. You are on a temp work permit. This is simple. It should not be used as a stepping stone. People do, but that is Very risky. I have seen a huge amount of 457 disaster stories with this. PR rules can change at a whim. You may think you are going to qualify down stream only for the occupation to be entirely removed. Just remember. On a 457. You have not emigrated. You are here for a short term work slot. fifi69
I'm not affected by this but I'm still angry on behalf of those it will affect. I agree with Pea, 457s have lost their shine. 457s are here because their jobs are on SOL, just like people who come via the PR route and yet they don't get the same benefits. But yet they both pay the same taxes!! We know a couple who are coming out in a couple of weeks, they have 4 school age children. I've sent them a link to this news, personally if I was in their shoes, knowing what the guy will be earning, I would pull the plug now and not bother

With the economy slowing, there are already fewer opportunities for 457 sponsorship anyway and now there is a financial "hit". I would say that for people already out there with school age children, it can only be see as unfair.

Of course that's right, but what about when you've done your research, do your figures and out of the blue they change the goal posts. When we first looked into it, there was lafha, by the time we got here it had been abolished!! or like the family coming this month, they too have done their research, but they couldn't take today's news into the equation now could they. They've rented there house, given notice to employers, sold stuff etc etc. I'm sure this news will put them in a bit of a pickle
