Applying for jobs from the UK

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I will be moving to Perth permanently in January 2014 so its all systems go organising shipping etc. but I am also attempting to apply for as many positions as possible from the UK before I leave. I have seen an awesome job posting for a local city council which is almost identical to what I do in the UK (I'm involved in GIS).

I have looked at the job application guidance and its pretty much standard apart from the fact they want copies of my driving licence and a Police Clearance certificate which is no more than 6 months old.

I do have an address in Perth as we have pre booked our accommodation but the trouble is that the police certificate needs to be signed in front of a Australian Post Office clerk to witness it. I obviously cannot do this as I'm not in the country until January and my drivers licence will not yet be swapped for a WA one until I arrive. I did have a UK police clearance done for my Visa but this is now more than 6 months old. What do you guys reckon I should do?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

One point, is a uk police clearance enough or does it have to be something that involves Australia too.

Debs

I have contacted them and asked if UK clearence is enough. The trouble is though a CRB check cannot be performed on myself it has to be requested by an employer. So i guess the only police check i can do is the same one as that i obtained through the Visa process?

My advice would be do not get too excited. GIS jobs will come up again. Perhaps follow this one through with what you have and see where it goes. If I was in their shoes, being a council, then I would not say no to any request for information on the advertised job due to HR protocol but behind the scenes I would be nervous going down a route where an overseas person may not trun up - I know you will - but they do not know that. If they cannot get anyone else then they will get excited and keep in touch that will be the yard stick I guess. If you do all the chasing then it may tell you something. Good luck.

I am in no doubt that GIS jobs will appear all the time. The main reason why i want to start applying for jobs is mainly to get my name out there and CV on file. Plus i may get lucky and land one of them...which would be awesome. I currently work for local government in the Uk and when i joined them last year it took nearly 4 months for them to appointment me from application to my first day. This is why i'm starting the job hunt now. It is good to hear that Skype interviews are happening.

I have just had a reply from the council in question:

"Thank you for your enquiry.

Yes you will need to provide any employer here in Australia with a current police clearance from the UK that is 6 months or less old"

By this responce it looks like i will need to get a police certificate anyway?

Interesting we are employers in Perth and have not asked for that from any ex-pats we employed who came out or who we interviewed when still in the UK. We obvioulsy did other checks. Interesting that a council can make that statement?
