I have built my own home in the UK and wondered if it's possible to do the same in OZ. I'm a carpenter by trade so would look to employ other trades to do the jobs I can't but project manage it myself. Has anyone else done this?

As with everything here you need a license and they ain't cheap

It's a one day course you can do it at subiaco home expo it's not that expensive to do. Please stop scaremongering if you don't know the answer.

It's relatively easy to do and very interesting. As an owner builder they just expect you to know a bit about project management and costing stuff.

Here in WA any one job costing more than $20,000 you need a licensed builder this license is totally different to an owner builder course.

Av eking have a very good reputation but they are dearer than most. A good middle of the road builder is someone like the summit group , wa home group or gemmill homes. All will build you a nice house but remember whatever price you get add about $50,000 to allow you to finish.

Ventura homes are just starting on site to build our house and so far they have been excellent in the sales and Pre sales phases.

The package was very good value and meant we only added $11k at Pre start.

Obviously time will tell on quality but past builds I've seen look very good.

Don't read too much into the product review site as it is possible to pay for reviews to be added or removed !

You can owner build here quite easily, we looked at it as we self built our last house in the UK but we needed more deposit than we had to get finance.

We looked into it, but where we hit a road block was with the finance, I can't remember the ratios but you need a lot more of your own money than you do if you engage an established house builder.

thank you interesting points as we are also hoping to do the interior work ourselves, as sean is a plasterer and we have built all our extensions here in the uk it will also give sean something to do for a bit ! lots more homework into the other companies, we have to build a two story house its one of the conditions on the street its in, cant believe all the conditions like colour of roof tiles, etc.

Never heard of two storey covenant , you'll be lucky to let a builder let you in before handover , what suberb is this Dalkeith. Peppy Grove

We were given a few options from builders when we looked into it, a couple of builders would build "To lock up" meaning the roof was on, windows and doors were in etc, I didn't look any further into it, but by the sounds of it you would have to fit your own bathrooms kitchens, plastering decorating flooring etc, I suppose the bank would have a say in this too and only finance you to this point as well.

101 Residential came highly recommended by the owner of Total Eden, a huge retic outfit here in Australia

we are looking at building early next year, any advice would be appreciated.

Not now they were sold for peanuts other year , 3 years ago they out our retic in , an Irish kid , think he told me there was 2 blokes doing northern burbs , they closed a load of shops , 101 do the pod things a single storey with a room on top , when you are at lock up , the plastering is done as the kitchen and bathrooms are in hence lock up lol
