The Perth economy is stronger than ever and there are 100 jobs for everyone. Then, sit back, watch the new arrivals come in, boyed on the news and wait for them to start posting that they cant find work and are getting desperate. Then, critisise them smugly for not doing their research. There is a thread running on the big site at the moment where this is happening. Or, i can give some balance to people. People planning the move can get so excited that they get rose tinted glasses - i know i did. It is important for people to know what the situation is like for their industry. There are some sectors doing really well. But, others that are very down. There is no hiding the fact the economy is having issues. There is a good reason why interest rates have just been cut to their lowest ever levels and after the survey out today saying business confidence is still falling, further cuts may be needed. Everyone forgets that mining has a lot of interplay with other sectors. There's never anything positive and that's not a true reflection of Perth. Yes, mining has taken a dip but that's the nature of a boom and bust industry. It amazes me that the people in it didn't realise that rather than spending like there was no tomorrow while times were good. The rest of Perth still feels like it has a positive vibe to me and is certainly nowhere near the depths that the uk has been in over the last few years. You could say where i have posted about the mining game, that it is negative, but there is not much positive in the industry at the moment. For the first time in my career i know more unemployed miners than employed miners. Yes, mining is a boom / bust and i agree, it is amazing that people dont realise that. Though this boom has been a very long one. There are a fair few people that work in it and have never seen the bust. No, Perth, has not been like or is like the UK. But, the economy has certainly slipped. You have been in Perth a month. Heck, that is barely a holiday legnth. In the last 12 months it has changed a fair bit. Actually I can see why they are cutting these jobs, to pay a full time wage to an aide just incase a student has an allergic reaction when teachers, other staff can be trained to do this as part of their job is definitely overspending. I've been back in Perth 2.5 years now, and it's still plodding along, but as a contractor, who know whats round the corner. Only one friend has lost their job (they are in new mining projects), and it looks like they'll be out over East for a year or two. At the moment I'm just putting as much as I can away as a buffer. Many a sleepless night is being had by many a person, and there are some very good people who can't find work. Yes it is cyclical, but no one expected the decline to be so rapid. When it comes to spending like there is no tomorrow, that in part is unavoidable when you live in the most expensive city in one of the most expensive countries in the world. My fear is the "dip" hasn't filtered through to the rest of the economy, I am heavily committed here, as are most folk who arrived post boom, and I am very nervous about the future. My guess if for two reasons, there is always a lag between the economy stalling and house prices - hence why i was able to sell mine at a reasonable price just at the start of the GFC. Then, Perth has the unique issue that there are still a lot of migrants coming in and a shortage of housing. As we all know, there is very little housing development done on a big scale like the UK where a developer comes along and build an entire suburb. Here, it is down to individuals. Mr VS is very to the point on the WA economy which in turn is linked to the boom of mining although not so much now. The big money earners are dwindling in this sector hence a knock on effect hence 300 folks applying for one job in Bunnings .....
