Weedolly
We got a house a lot quicker than we though and moved out of our short term rental 3 weeks early but we have paid till end of the month and it is non refundable so have not handed the keys back. Today the owners sends me a message that they have not seen us at the property for the last week or so and we have not put the bins out. How do they know - have they been watching us - they don't even live in the same suburb - creepy!
Bobopaulsy
Tell them you have got a long term rental sooner than you thought and realise you were going to lose your deposit so you are moving your stuff gradually whilst staying in your new accom....there fore if they can rent out the house again sooner you can move all your stuff out, for a refund of the deposit off course...it may help both you out :-)
Candygirl
I agree with Bobopaulsy. Perhaps they are not spying on you, just concerned for your wellbeing. They may realise that you are new migrants and are just keeping an eye for you.
Weedolly
I agree with Bobopaulsy. Perhaps they are not spying on you, just concerned for your wellbeing. They may realise that you are new migrants and are just keeping an eye for you. We are not new migrants been here nearly 5 years just not in Perth and they know that. It is not a deposit it is over $1000 that we have lost and we had to sign a lease stating that if we moved out early it was non refundable so there is no way they are getting they keys back to re let the property. I just think it strange that they know the exact time we have not been there and saying they had not seen us at the property. jonandsarah
I remember stressing cause we got an email from our short term let saying that our time was coming to an end, we had moved out and not said as our container had not arrive and we could borrow a few things until then. I stressed like hell drove down the next day with the borrowed stuff and gave them the keys back the next I was stressing it had but broken into when we left it empty - thankfully it hadnt
elfie
That certainly would give me the creep also thinking they had been watching .....shivers ...................... dont blame you not giving keys back either
ali
They may be worried you've done a runner with the keys to their property and would allow someone else to go into it. Personally, if i'd signed a contract saying that I wouldn't get money back if I broke the lease then as I knew what I was getting into i'd have just emailed them, told them we'd got other accommodation and given them the keys back. If the property does get broken into and trashed - you're still legally the tenant - i'd cut my loses and give them the keys back.

I am not complaining about not getting the money back, thats just they way it is, what I am saying is how do they know we havent been there for over a week unless they have been watching as they do not live near and the house is in a cul de sac so they must have been driving in specifically, not just noticed driving past! ali
Maybe they are friends with one of the neighbours who keeps an eye on the property? Or maybe they do drive by because they've had problems with tenants before?
jackboots
I agree with Ali , I bet they know the neighbours . probably find they have family in the same street/area .. still creepy ... big brothers watching yooooooo .. hehe , just kidding
basicweb
Due to the lack of short term furnished rentals, it may be to your advantage to let the owner know you have found somewhere else and hand the keys back, if they are able to re-let it then you could approach them for a partial refund. In my experience most owners would be happy to do this. And I agree with the above, they probably aren't spying on you, just concerned for you, as maybe a neigbour has said they haven't seen you around Tracey

I really don't think I need to report everywhere I go to a landlord or the street busybody! Edited August 25, 2013 by Weedolly
ali
They might be concerned that you've done a bunk with their keys
SaffanZimbo
Maybe they are friends with one of the neighbours who keeps an eye on the property? Or maybe they do drive by because they've had problems with tenants before? I agree it is probably the neighbours who are good friends of the owners. When we move we will be renting our house through agents but our neighbours will be our eyes and ears as we know they will let us know if anything untoward goes wrong. We will however let our tenants know this and hopefully this will work well both ways as we have awesome neighbours and very handy with IT on one side and anything electrical on the other (saved us a fortune over the years!). We will however have full tenants insurance cover just in case as estate agents I don't think can be relied on solely...
