Candygirl
We have a short term let booked for 4 weeks when we first arrive in Perth. We hope to register with the ATO and Medicare as soon as we can upon arrival. How long does it take for the Medicare cards and TFN Numbers to be sent to you? Is four weeks long enough? If not, any suggestions as to how to get round this? TIA Lorraine
jackboots
Medicare will give you numbers straight away. just go to the nearest shopping center that has a medicare office grab a ticket and wait in line . Take passports etc with you and they will send you a plastic card through the post, TFN I think was straight away as well , done online . ( unless that's changed)
kerry267
TFN can be done online, my husbands took a week to come through in the post and mine took 3 weeks. Medicare will give you a temporary card and our plastic card arrived in 3 weeks.
Candygirl
Thanks very much. Are the temporary Medicare cards sufficient for ID purposes for obtaining a rental?
Chardy
We got our plastic ones in 10 days so had them in time for rental applications, sorry that doesn't answer the question !
Rossmoyne
Thanks very much. Are the temporary Medicare cards sufficient for ID purposes for obtaining a rental? They should be, especially in conjunction with your passports, visa etc. TFN can be done online - do it asap after you arrive and you should receive the formal notification in the mail within 3 - 4 weeks. When you lodge your application online, you get to a final screen that gives you a receipt number and I strongly suggest that you print this, or if you don't have access to a printer straight away, download it to your laptop.
