ali
There's a point on South Street on my drive home from work that I catch that smell - it always reminds me of home. We've had a recent holiday in the states, had an awesome time, but towards the end my daughter said "I'm so grateful to live in Perth Mum"
verystormy
I dont think anyone could not stand in Kings Park and look across the view and not be pretty stunned. Every time i go home, i go over the Dawesville Bridge (google it and look at google images) i sigh and remember how lucky i am and how stunning it is. The city of Perth is incredibly different to UK cities and one of the first things you notice is how incredibly clean it is. The councils are a lot better at things and the city / state do so much. For example, it is the Perth Festival and fringe at the moment which is fantastic. I will never forget our first christmas in Oz and it seems funny as the thing that is clearest in my memory was the bin! Christmas day fell on our bin collection day - which of course new years would as well. It was a very hot summer and we had that week been eating prawns and other sea food and i remember thinking that the smell of the rubbish in the heat would be overpowering the entire house as the bins wouldnt be emptied for 3 weeks! Need not have worried as christmas morning there he was emptying the bins! I rushed out and give the driver a mince pie lol. I love that i can wander down to the Peel shore which is a stunning spot and you look out and think what a wonderful place for a picnic or a outdoor breakfast and guess what? WA thinks the same and so you will often see a steel box sat there - a free to use gas BBQ. So you can make that early breakfast in the sun and looking out at the water. Never had that in Leicester lol
Akasully2
I have an expectation that the sea will be aqua on bright sunny days. Whenever I watch WDU I study the colour of the water and sometimes when it looks grey I think...can that be right?? I think that my OMG moment will be staring at the ocean and seeing that it is clear aqua (hopefully) for myself.
Akasully2
New question..... Are you a giver or a taker? On our avatar profile blurb at the side of the screen it tells as how many posts we have made and how many 'likes' we have received. I often look at those people who have a high 'post' to 'like' ratio and think that they must be incredibly witty or friendly or informative (or all three) to gain those results. Hats off to them. In addition to this, by clicking on someone's profile you can see not only the information above but also how many likes they have given. Some are givers, generously liking other people's posts, whilst others who may have received many, have in fact liked very few in return. So, are you a giver or a taker? Have you been motivated to 'like' more because others are generous to you? Do you spread the love/like? Do you give and receive equally? Are you frugal with the likes because you like very little or has it not occurred to you to do it?
portlaunay
My Likes Given:Likes Received ratio is pretty poor I 'like' posts that I think are well written, amusing or informative but as a Mod, I'm cautious and there have been times I've wanted to 'like' something because of the message it's sending but to do so might imply my support is representative of the forum and not myself as an individual. The issue about avatars is interesting though. For a long time I had them switched off, it's amazing how your opinion of someone can be shaped by a tiny image against each of their posts and I wonder if knowing someone's gender changes your opinion or response to their posts. I'm quite particular about how much I want to reveal about myself on the internet despite the NSA/GCHQ and Facebook probably knowing what colour underwear I have on at this very moment and publishing my image or my full name just doesn't feel right. On a summers day with the sun shining it will appear crystal blue. On a winters cloudy day it will appear grey. It is very clear though when your in it - you can be in chest hight and see your toes. My favourite is when the dolphins are surfing waves and you can see them in the wave

I "like" posts that I agree with and I have received an almost equal number of "likes" on my posts, so maybe that means I have a balanced view of life! I certainly like to think so! millar.wall.1985
Hi all! Akasully thank you so much for starting this feed, it has been so insightful! We're at a pretty similar stage I think:S However were staying in UK longer (Autumn 2014) just to save a bit more. Our recci trip will set us bk a bit but hopefully it will clarify things further. I have just sat with pen to paper for an hour and a half and noted everything from this feed. I have taken some fantastic advice about things I hadnt even considered. Its also great for those already living in Perth to to share their views/opinions/experiences with us. This has given me the kick up the jacksie I needed. Sorry to clog up the feed but just wanted to let you all know how helpful I've found this. Cheers Lauren

Good idea to read through it with pen and paper beside you. I am going to read back through it too and just clarify some points now we are are so close to going. Still have new questions to ask, so keep an eye out for the new responses as you may find them helpful too. All the best. Akasully2
New Question..... Last night a was having a flick through another website aimed as Brits in Oz and found a post that was 4 years old. It was from a expat who had her daughter in Ocean Reef high School. She said she was concerned by the behaviour / discipline of the students and wondered if this was the norm as it was her first experience of an Oz school. She had come from a private school in the UK. (Maybe that said it all). The response from another person, stated that generally in Oz there seen to be a problem with behaviour. She suggested talking to the head incase it was a one off thing or moving the child to private. How depressing! I read this and felt so very disappointed as this is not the impression I had so far from what I have read on here. So my questions are: Do Ozzy schools have poor behaviour in general? What is Ocean Reef HS like, does it have problems? How does it compare to Belridge, which is close by? How have your children found it, moving from the UK to Perth school wise? Are the standards so much different in Private? Do private school's suffer from funding shortages/limited resources compared to State schools? Do you feel the pressure to go private? mintpro
Hi Akasully, I said I'd reply to your post and help as much as I can. My aunt moved to Perth with her 2 kids from Oxford to Clarkson (hence why I want to head there). Her 2 kids were in a very small school in England (<150 kids in primary). When they moved to Perth the school system changed so much for them but it was exactly what they needed (school >500 kids). Her son was so quite and wouldn't talk or socialise with any friends in England and you should see him now. He is completely different and is so much better off for it it's amazing to see. Her older daughter always enjoyed school but has fit in so much better in Oz. Also talking to her about private schools. Her two friends have their kids in private schools and wish they hadn't sent them there but they are settled with friends so they don't want to move them, so my aunt isn't moving them to private when they head in high school. Anyway sorry I couldn't answer most of your questions, I'm also not a mum but thought this would help abit.
Akasully2
Thanks Mintpro. I really appreciate your input. So why did the friend's mum regret it?
mintpro
After conversations with my aunt they were saying that the money wasn't worth it since my aunts kids get on so well in public schools. The kids weren't getting a better education for the extra money they were spending was the overall thought, but as the kids were settled in the schools with friends etc they aren't prepared to take them out.
