That's it now Sully :cute:no turning back x

Tell me about it! It is a weird feeling. I have researched and read up on stuff so much, I almost feel like I know the place. I have built it up in my head so much that I hope I am not heading for a disappointing fall. The thought now of landing, getting a car hire, checking out places and deciding on where to settle and send the kids to school, plus try and tie that in with getting a job in a corresponding area seems daunting to say the least. I start to feel panicked at times. Thankfully the OH is the calm one and he just takes it bit by bit. I still need to sell my car here and tie up those loose ends. Arhhhhhh......it will happen regardless if I am ready or not!

Oh yes. Living at my in laws who are very accommodating but obviously they have their own ways. Every time I put a cup or spoon down in the kitchen, it is whipped up and stuffed in the dishwasher, even if I still need to use it!

i know exactly how you feel ;-)

at 38 years old i have now clue how to hang out washing and i have no idea what lane to drive in when we go out lol !

Akasully2, honestly it will all come together, but you have to be patient and give yourself time. Make sure you relax as much as you can when you first land, there is no rush to get out and about in the car the first day (even though I bet you will be dying to). It will all seem like too much, so treat the first week as a bit of a holiday and finding your feet. Go the beach, find the nearest coffee shop, and then make the big decision Coles or Woolworths shopping.

Seriously though, you have been through sooo much already and I know you feel like there is so much more to do. You have researched and planned so much, that I'm sure you will achieve everything you want. Try to pace yourself and enjoy it as much as possible as there will still be times when you feel overwhelmed, I found a glass of wine helped at that point, even though some things really do take awhile in Perth, other things happen really quick, so honestly finding a house and the right school should be relatively easy. Can't believe we will soon be able to meet up and have that coffee. Take care and enjoy your last few weeks in the UK.

Ha ha, I imagine we will be living with my parents when bridging the gap from container leaving to flights. Does it feel weird now your belongings have gone?

Great bit of advice, we will take this on board when get out there, although I bet it is tempting to try and sort everything out in the first week.

That's good to know. Often it says it is Mindarie but on the map it looks more like Clarkson on the other side of the main road. What was that like? The other place that has caught our eye for holiday rentals is Ocean Reef. Any thoughts on how these three areas compare?

My OH is obsessed with looking at pedestrian views of each road on google maps and keeps searching for joy riding skid marks on the roads. One place looked like someone was doing hand brake turns previously. Obviously not sure how old the pics are but better safe than sorry!

As as for meeting up for a coffee and a natter, that sounds fab!

On a completely different note, as I read these posts I often see my name shortened to Sully. Makes complete sense as my user name means, "also known as sully too". I chose this as a bit of a play on my name. However, this is what I call my OH, so now as I read things addressed to me it looks like it's for my OH! I wish I could change my username but that would be totally impractical at this stage. Someone will have to think of an alternative version, no doubt one for Porty to toy with! Aka?

Yes and no. I feel lighter without all the stuff, however, trying to pack and remember to leave out every possible thing you may need for the next 9 weeks takes some forethought. Today my MIL said she didn't know what she was going to wear for a special meal we are all going to soon. I started laughing because I knew I only had the choice of three things I had brought with me. Just pleased I remembered to leave out different shoes to go with them. Certainly focuses the mind. Three choices, no more deliberations in front of the mirror. :nah:

It is hard to check out areas on Google Street View as things change so quickly. In my area it looks like most is empty land as it was done before most of the houses were built - I think about 2007. So looks nothing like it now.

I dont know the northern suburbs that well other than from the few visits we have made up there. We did find there were an awful lot of people wearing premiership football shirts. The houses look fine. I would not over concentrate on a particular area till you get here as the feel is so different to when you visit. We had a list of places we were adamant we were going to chose from. Secret Harbour was the number 1. Then when we arrived and started looking, SH was quickly demoted to the last place we wanted to live - nothing wrong with it, just didnt feel right for us. The place we ended up in and have lived in since and are now building in was not even on the areas we had put down to consider

Didn't realise the photos were that old! The rental is just a base and we have told ourselves to keep an open mind. When I first started doing the research, my favourite area was the Hills, kalamunda. That seems to have slipped place on paper due to bugs, distance from Ocean, price v age, etc. However, we may actually fall in love with it once there, can't Predict the reaction. I have a list of places all over the place I want to see, will decide from there. What the research has helped with though is the semi familiarity of knowing the geography of the area, knowing roughly where things are.

Yes that is going to be a tricky one deciding what to leave out for the case etc. I think ours will really be our daughter's gear then in ours will be a mixture of clothing plus maybe a formal outfit in case we see anybody for interviews etc although not that hopeful in that time.

What will you be doing for a contact number for those first few weeks when you land? I am guessing you would have cancelled contracts etc in the UK so are you maybe just going to get a pay as you go sim to put in existing phone until you're sorted possibly, it is something we have thought about. I have wondered how the shipping company will get in touch etc although they have said they can e-mail.

Thought I would share our removal photos with you. All carried out on a beautiful spring day...

Yet again, all the pics are upside down. What is weird, I rotated half of them on my iPad so at least some should be the right way up, but no, not the case!

That would be because your stuff is now getting used to being on the other side of the world Sully!!!!

Just a suggestion Akasully but perhaps have a good look around all the areas you are thinking of renting in before you finally take the plunge. So often, as Verystormy says, what looks good on paper and on the internet, can just not have a vibe that appeals to you.

Enjoy your first days without any pressure and go on a look-see trip.... don't just drive around the areas, park your car and wander around on foot.... Nothing better than a walk around to suss out your feelings about an area.

Hi Keefo,

You can get pay as you go sims and phones really easily, just make sure you take your ID (passport and UK drivers licence) with you.

If you bring a phone with you make sure it's unlocked from your provider if necessary.

There are Telstra and Optus shops in just about every shopping centre.

Thanks Nikki. Phone should be ok as it's a bought phone to be used with any network, we just happen to use O2 on a months rolling contract. Is that generally the done thing when you're first there to buy something like pay & go sim. Ta

You know what I realised tonight after reading this thread? My folder containing all my hand written notes about each of the areas I had considered is packed in the container on a slow boat to Oz!!!! :arghh: I feel like I am about to do my final tests and now I have lost all my revision notes, oh bugger. (That is much more politer than what I actually said and am still saying in my head). Not happy.
