Akasully2
Oh so sorry I have hit a raw nerve! Never meant to divide men and set one against the other! Ok, so what we know that is you are lucky enough to live near a great butcher then all is well. If you shop in the supermarket, forget it. Great idea about the DIY bacon, Porty. You'll have to give us your recipe. Equally so, imbrace the changes and don't harp on about the UK's differences. Let's take a different line of enquiry then chaps to stop the arguments....has anyone made their own sausages? Was it worth it? What is a collagen casing? Synthetic? I watched a youtube clip of people making their own, looked do-able but needs two of you. Can't imagine my OH joining me in the kitchen in Perth, stuffing his pork into the hopper. (Did I really just say that?!). For £43.00 I can buy a metal attachment to go on my kenwood. It minces meat or then feeds the pork into casings. The suggestions was that you make masses in one go then just freeze them. Worth it? Or doomed to end up in the back of the cupboard next to the cucumber ribbon maker and salad tosser (here I go again!). Nikkis2000
SAUSAGEGATE!! Who knew such an innocent question could be so contentious?! The little sod isn't doing himself any favours at the mo, he is sitting on top go the high cupboard in the utility room and arrogantly refuses to come down for a cuddle! (That was about the cat, not my husband). Once again you had me laughing our loud in the office with this one! Regards Christmas I think I am little bonkers attempting to do Xmas for 13 a week before we leave. However, in true PM style I have actually managed to delegate most of the work so all I need to do is deliver the finished article somewhere close to time! Failing that I'll be in the garage with the cats and a box of wine!! I know it will be emotional as it's the last full day I'll spend with my parents before we leave so I am just going to try and enjoy it as much as I can. I haven't had any real nerves as yet. I am so focused and excited at finishing up at work (I only have a week left ) and concentrating on getting through Christmas, that I think it will probably hit me sometime after Boxing Day, or maybe when we're sitting on the tarmac in a little over three weeks time
portlaunay
Worth it? Or doomed to end up in the back of the cupboard next to the cucumber ribbon maker and salad tosser (here I go again!). Depends if you're interested in experimenting with your sausage. It's a bit of fun and if you find a recipe you like then it's worth filling your freezer. Colagen skins are artificial, made from animal product, collagen reclaimed from tissue and bones, processed, extruded and dried. I don't like them as they tend to be a bit thin and I like my sausage with a bit of bite. Fish sausages are really nice made with collagen skins though as you don't want anything too 'meaty'. Sausages are good fun to make with the kids, we've had great success with them rummaging through the cupboards and stuffing dried cranberries, apricot, nuts and all manner of weirdness into theirs (including nutella). £43 might be a bit expensive if you use it only once and they're the sort of thing that can be found gathering dust in charity shops. You'll find them next to the tagines, between the soda streams and the pie makers.
verystormy
I have never made my own sausages, but do make my own sausage meat for stuffing at christmas. 350g of lean pork 150g of fatty pork such as belly Into the food processor Then add in: Sage leaves A bit of thyme dried cranberies onion breadcrumbs a dash of masala salt and pepper Then another blitz in the processor till smooth / sausage meat texture What i dont use for stuffing, i line a loaf tin with streaky bacon and fill with the mix and its a great meatloaf
portlaunay
That sounds pretty similar to mine except I add some nuts for texture. Walnuts or almonds are good.

Happy little Vegemite
My son is scared he is going to hunt something and be stung/bitten and die, thinks it is better for him to stay. Oh, he is lovely! (I meant your cat when I said that, but same goes for your son and his worry) I don't know if this will make you feel better or worse, but my sisters cat took on one too many snakes (they lived in Roleystone in the hills) and met his early demise :sad:He was very silly though, used to bring snakes home with him and bring them into the house! We are leaving our two furry purry's behind and my son is going to be devastated, one of them sleeps on his pillow most nights
Akasully2
Poor cat. Bringing snakes in the house!! My cat is a real hunter, got to give him credit, he is fantastic at it. Feel sorry for the creatures he attacks though. I intervened once by saving a wood mouse from his jaws only to make the situation worse. I held the little mouse in my hands as was convinced he was just in shock, turned out his back was broken and suffered even longer. It was heartbreaking, eventually I had to put it out of its misery by covering it with a large leaf then wacking it with a spade. Didn't think I could do it but couldn't see if suffer any longer. Horrible. i think I just need to come to terms with the fact the cat is staying here.

Akasully2
Another question coming on.... I have been debating whether to take the SEBO vacuum cleaner with us, have weighed up cost of buying a new dyson and taking it over in the box but pee'd off that the 5 year warranty would be invalid in Oz. Now thinking about cleaning the sebo and replacing the roller brush and filter with a spanking new one sealed in the packaging. Been on the immigration website and had a full list of stuff they may cause them concern if not cleaned properly. So the question is ...... How did you clean your vacuum cleaner so that it was to an acceptable standard?
Chardy
Our dyson was 5 years old when it arrived and despite our best cleaning efforts it was deemed dirty. We had to choose to have it cleaned for $188 or have it destroyed for free. We bit the bullet and just bought a new one here for $500 which was pretty much the same as UK prices and warranty intact ;-)
Akasully2
Hi Chardy, I remember you said it was condemned. Just wondered if you had missed a trick cleaning it!! if we sell the SEBO on eBay we will get nothing for it. I think we will give it a go and clean it with the steam cleaner, jays fluid and a bottle brush. Maybe I could borrow a hamster and send it up the tubes like a chimney sweep! I'll stock up on SEBO bags as only 80p each here compared to £2.00 over there. If they condemn it, then at least I have tried. How are you getting on with your dyson? Which model did you get? Would you recommend it?

How did you clean your vacuum cleaner so that it was to an acceptable standard? Yes, yes, yes, bring it and while you're at it could you pop into John Lewis and get one for us please? The one we want if £300 compared to $1200 here! Forget the Dyson, don't believe the marketing hype and the fancy looks, stick with your SEBO and have someone send a box of bags every now and then. I'm pretty sure that SEBO have a worldwide guarantee but there isn't a dealer in Perth.
verystormy
Have to admit, its one of the pieces of domestic equipment i dont use. But, my wife loves the Dyson - though she now wants one of them robot cleaners
Akasully2
Porty, is your wife over here yet? I thought that was her mission, to come back with a SEBO! I went into TK Maxx recently and all the Christmas decs were gone. Just odds and sods left. Sure she will find some bargains elsewhere though. Going back to the list of what's dodgy to bring, I was surprised to see bread makers on it. Apparently you have to check there is no flour or grains at the bottom of the unit. Sounds like a job for the SEBO with attachments on. We have a a collection of shells that we have collected over the years. according to the list they may be dodgy too. Do I boil them or ditch? I also have a large cows skull that I used for still life painting that is destined to be donated to my art dept. don't think that would have a hope in hell of get through. Are the UK customs as rigorous as Oz, I wonder?

Are the UK customs as rigorous as Oz, I wonder? No, we cancelled. We should be on the train from Singapore to Bangkok now We just couldn't justify the expense with me being out of work and the flights so expensive at this time of year. Kids are devastated. That cow skull would be interesting what with us poms not being able to give blood here because of BSE. UK customs are nowhere near as tight as Oz but then the UK hasn't had its flora and fauna devastated by the introduction of alien plants and animals. Akasully2
I wish we were as tight as Oz, both in term of material goods and people. I'm sorry you had to cancel the trip. Hopefully 2014 will bring you a new job and you can re-plan the trip in the future. A long way to go for a SEBO. When we arrive, I'll try not to rub your noise in it that we have one!!! I have just made my first enquiries into removal companies. Booking quotes/visits for the new year. I have so far contacted- 1st move international/ship it pickfords bishops move excess international Does anyone have experience of these companies? Can you recommend any good ones that work in the south east of the UK? I have had a search on the forums but haven't found what I'm looking for, slow process. Any help would be appreciated. portlaunay
No experience of any of those, we were with Crown and the only criticism I have is that their packers need a new watch. It took them dawn to dusk to pack up our stuff. Mid-afternoon I asked them when they thought it would be done. "Another hour" was their response. I think they left around 7pm. A couple of things were broken but they were repaired and paid for without quibble.

Would you recommend it? To be honest it was the last thing and we barely put any effort in so the hose was still very dusty ! We bought a DC39 here and it's been great as have the 2 Dysons before it. Proper British engineering at its best. As for those robot vacuums unless you spend over $1500 they are pretty poor ! For shipping we used Schepens based in Southampton and they were great all the way through and pretty good price wise.

Nikkis2000
Haven't come across any of them Akasully, but I do seem to remember a thread about Pickfords that was less than glowing! We're using PSS. I think they have countrywide coverage. They have been very good in the run up, but the proof is in the pudding so will report back in three weeks time on the packing side!! Re hoovers - We are not taking ours as it is on it's last legs anyway. I am liking the idea of the robot ones as mentioned above but not sure what the cats would make of it. Though I have seen some You Tube clips of some cats sitting on them whilst in motion
Akasully2
What a laugh! A cat zooming around the room!!! My son just asked me why I burst out laughing! When I told him, he did too. Love it! Ive just emailed the rental company to get advice about bringing the cat. OH is insistent we don't bring him but I just can't let it rest in my mind. Putting aside the cost, I have missed the blood test 30 days after the jab. Petair said to have a blood test done and have a new jab done at the same time so if it fails I could take him back promptly 30 days later for a new blood test. Either way, he would need to stay with my nephew until it was time for the 180 days from the blood test to be up, another 2 months being fostered, if we go in April. Not a bad idea in some respects because it will allow us to settle in a rental (as long as we can find one willing to accept a cat...waiting to hear on that one). Nikki, I like your simplified version of it, how many trips to the vets, etc. if I can butter up my nephew to take the cat round the M25 and drop him off, it could be a goer. I really think I'm going to pine for my cat if I don't take him. He is only 3 years old and he has a long life ahead of him as long as he doesn't get bitten, eaten, stung! Male cats, just like men get more affectionate as they get older. I don't want to miss out on that.
