Cheese and port.

It is possible to get pretty much all of the cheese of the uk and France and Italy in Perth. But you will pay for it. I know I have bleated on about it before, but Boatshed in Cottesloe has several hundred cheeses plus about 30 specials. They have several very good buffalo mozzerala.

Port though is another matter. Personally I have struggled. Generally the only good port I get these days is on the flight, particulary on first. Though busines is reasonable.

Windy Creek Golden Tawny is light but very pleasant but the Liqueur Shiraz is a bargain at $20 but they also do or did an eight year old port that is very, very nice and my favourite cheese tipple.

While you're down there, pick up a case of the Old Vines Shiraz, it's not heavily spiced, just warm and not gluggy and heavy like some Shiraz so no sore head in the morning.

Pinelli also do an aged tawny that's lovely. I like it with light cheeses because while it has a heavy caramelised raisin character it lacks a bit of punch and sharpness for that I prefer with stronger cheeses.

Does anyone have a translation book? Or can you get an app that converts your language?

"Hello, good fellow. May I ask directions to Tasmania? Jolly good, thank you old chum" converts to ... "G,day mate. Ow you get to Tassie? Cheers, mate" (or something like that! I have a lot to learn but will enjoy doing it!)

New question....

Just read the thread 'Is WA heading for recession?', mainly written by PP's favourite geologist VS. I must confess most of it went straight over my head. Too much jargon for my layman's brain to take in.

Now, this is where I embarrass myself....Can you find gold locally to you with a metal detector? Is it there or do you have to fly up north and dig 1km down? Being a geologist you must have a heads up on what to look for, so have you ever gone out looking for it with a metal detector and a fish paste sandwich? Any success? (Fish paste sandwich optional).

Ooooo, I'm interested in hearing a geologists answer on this one...

Being a bit of a metal detectorist my husband is obsessed by the idea of gold hunting and is convinced he's going to find some when we get there. I never realised how many reality TV shows there are about it; jungle gold, gold rush, gold divers, and I have the pleasure of them all being on our sky+ box, oh the joy!

Even though we are shipping our stuff next Friday and are yet to finalise what we are taking, clean our outdoor stuff or do our insurance inventory he is convinced that he has time to go out for a spot of detecting on Sunday, procrastination anyone?

(And on the port question, my Dad gets his shipped directly from a vineyard on the Eastern side of Oz in Rutherglen, Victoria, funnily enough an old gold mining town)

the thought of you with your fish paste sarnie digging for gold

Always had fish paste sandwiches and a carton of orange squash when I went on school trips when I was little. Do they even make that stuff anymore? If I found gold, I'd upgrade my sandwich filling! Anyway, glad it tickled you. X

They do still make it - we bought some a while a go as I used to have it as a kiddie but never brought myself round to eating it and it went mouldy BLEURGH!!!!!

I like the idea of gold though….

Hope you are well - missed a lot! Been busy packing etc argh!

Well, I also like the image of you with a swag on your shoulder and munching a fish paste sarnie lol

By the way, I don't think WA is heading for recession, but it is, I think going to suffer a bit / slow down a fair bit.

Yes you can go prospecting for gold and there are clubs. There is no gold in the immediate area of Perth. There are areas prospective in a few spots in the south west. Most would head to the gold fields around Kalgoolie. I have seen people find nuggets with metal detectors. But, you need to be aware of the rules and not try it on someone's license. You often can get permission on companies ground though and many big mine sites have them. The Laverton area is very good for those with metal detectors.

I do have a metal detector. OH bought for me as he remembered me saying I fancied the idea of finding buried treasure as a kid. I love discovering things and exploring, it is in my nature, never really gone away, even if the eating of fish paste sandwiches has!

In the UK, I started off so keen. Read all the guide books on how to do it and the etiquette of asking permission first. I even phoned up the council to ask if I was allowed to do it on common land. Big fat NO. I tried it on the foot paths around the public walk ways but just found rubbish. Either that or the soil was so hard I couldn't dig it. Felt so embarrassed carrying a spade with me around the woodland surrounding the local golf course that it put me off. I did try it in the garden but only found nails and it looked like we had a mole infestation. Gave up on that too. Really wanted to walk a farmer's field but felt embarrassed to ask farmer Giles for permission in case he said bugger off. In fact the only thing I have ever found was 50p by the swings!

I am therefore hoping to be able to get it out and show it the light of day in Oz. Quite fancy finding gold or a bit of long lost jewellery on the beach. I don't think I'll bring a fish paste sandwich though, I would probably end up smelling like shark bait.:wideeyed:

When you get here I will meet up and go through all the maps and things and show you where I would head. There is a special place i know that no one has ever been over with a metal detector as they think it is no prospective. But, I worked for a mine there that mined a bit of it and had fist sized nuggets.
