carpentry work?!?

Hi everyone,

Have posted about this a while ago now but as we are getting closer to the "BIG" move, thought I would re-post as this could determine whether or not we make it!!

Just wondered if there were any carpenters out there could tell me what the work situation is like. Am a fixing carpenter but have experience in all aspects of building. Also have 3 years WA experience (4 years ago) When I was in WA before, I worked for a home renovations company, having spoken with them already, they wouldn't have enough work for me when I get out there in a few months, which is a great shame as they were great to work for.

If there is anyone out there who is a carpenter/builder would be great to hear from you. will have my own van, tools, insurance and white card.

Have got 4 children so is a lot bigger move for us than before-don't wanna get it wrong.

I'm not sure about carpentry work but I had 3 job offers in a couple of days of landing as a joiner/ cabinet maker. There's building work going on that's for sure and I know the job feeds from the west Australian and seek have carpentry work.

Wa experience will count and pr visa's.

Congrats on the job front, sounds positive. Thanks for replying, hopefully, we will push on with the sale of the house and get back over there to enjoy a bit more sunshine!! Can I just ask are you NOR or SOR??

Hi mate, im a carpenter and I live down near Rockingham. We have been out here 8 weeks now. All the new build work seems to be kept between the Australian s . All the job ads for Carpenters seem to be up in the northern suburbs so im not sure where you are thinking of moving to. I have started working for myself and I found work what has kept me going up until now but is soon to be coming to an end. Hopefully I will find something soon . I have spoken to a few Carpenters that have recently moved to the southern suburbs and they are in the same situation unfortunately. Dont want to sound negative but its just the situation im in at the moment. Mark

Normal carpentry is like mark said not loads but the Aussies seem to have a hold over it. Biggest problem for a fixing carpenter is not many house have skirting and all internal door frmes are metal with mouldings already fitted.

 

It's different over here you mainly have

 

Roof carpenter

Cabinet maker (kitchen fitter)

 

Then there's the ones who specialise in garden decking etc.

 

The trade that is in high demand is formwork carpenters there's loads of work for this as concrete and afs walling is massive in WA.

This doesn't look good then for Carpenters wanting to emigrate....I wonder why it is on the in demand list still if there are no jobs it doesn't make sense to me...

 

I hope those of you out there already or about to move find jobs ASAP - we are in the same position - trying to find a carpentry position for Mr JenPen!

G'day

I am a qualified roof carpenter ( 20 years experience ) have permanent residency and live in NSW, I emigrated two years ago. I am thinking of heading to Perth for work, I have been looking for cut/stick/truss roofing jobs, which I specialise in and most want people with WA experience, other than the obvious is the carpentry work in WA very much different than in other parts of Australia? And I would be great-full if anyone could let me know how different the roofs are in Perth compared to ones in the UK. Thanks in advance... Dave

Hi, my husband is a carpenter and we live NOR he found a job within a day of us arriving and has moved on from that job and on looking for a new job he had several job offers so there is tonnes of work out there if you want it. Use your internet tools wisely and you find plenty of work as that what my husband did and is phone was red hot. For Roofing you need to read up on your stick/traditional pitched roofing as that's all they do in WA. Good luck :smile2:

Hi Vicky, it's great to hear your success. Can I ask, what do you mean 'use your internet tools wisely'? Do you mean to focus on particular job sites? It'd be really useful to understand what u mean so we don't waste time when it's out turn! Xx

I was a roof chippie in Perth years ago. Plenty of Poms in the trade, I did my apprenticeship with one. There are a few fixing teams around - just sold my van to a nice Pommie bloke running a team. You could contact him if you like? I'll sms him and see if its ok to send his number.
