smurphy49256
Hello, first post here, been a member for quite some time but just digging through the heeps of information available on the site before posting anything! Basically my partner and i are a young couple(24/23) and we plan to come over in january on a working holiday visa, im a plumber and my partner is a hairdresser but currently now works in the banking industry! I have been researching accommodation and prices of rent etc, but my question is what sort of realistic rental price are we lookiing at either in CBD or Freo(any other areas for young couples we are open to suggestions)?? My issue is we dont know whats a good rental price or not as prices are so varried. We arent looking for particular things in the accomodation other than it would have to be fully furnished and it would be a short term rental due to visa we would be holding! Close to transport should be a must also! My initial plan is to maybe book a bnb or hotel for a week or two, this will give us time to pick up a place to stat and hopefully work and get the ball rolling! We will be coming over with a decent savings account but dont want to be living of it for long! Any help information will be highly appreciated! thanks scott! CookieCrumble
Short term, fully furnished in the CBD and Freo is going to set you back a packet ($800+ per week) so not a great idea if you can help it. You are not necessarily restricted because of your visa, we came on WHV's and secured a 6 month rental close to the CBD, furnished and equipped for $430 per week. Areas I would consider for a young couple would be CBD, Northbridge, Highgate, Mount Lawley, Leederville, Subiaco, Claremont, Cottesloe, Fremantle - all places accessible by public transport and have shops/bars/restaurants within walking distance. Rents in these areas can vary, depending on what you want. 1/2 bed flats your looking upwards of $450 per week to $1,000's. If you look at the suburbs surrounding these places you might find slightly cheaper, but not by much.

We've just secured a 2 bedroom apartment in Fremantle for 4 weeks while we search for a long-term rental over there, fully furnished, costing us $700 a week. LauraHen
Hi, me and my boyfriend arrived in Perth two weeks ago. After staying with family, today we found out that we secured our first choice flat after looking around lots of properties. We will be paying $345 per week for a 2 bed in Jolimont, which is next to Subiaco. It is unfurnished. We have seen lots of nice furnished flats in and around the CBD for about $350 per week. it depends on how much room you want, you can easily get a 1 bed but we found some of them very small! Hope that helps.

Our old place was not great but a fantastic location. We were paying $550pw for it (3x1 unfurnished). The place next door to it was much nicer and they've reduced the price to $475 to get someone in. There are still a number of places asking for $1000+ but they've been kicking around for ages and even at $700 there are loads that aren't moving. smurphy49256
Thanks for such quick replies we aint to bothered how many bedrooms the property has is more ideal transport and clean and tidy!( will look into more of the locations mentioned) The high rental prices are making us re think if perth is the more suited city! As most people are in the position of going out without guarantee of a paying job! We are coming over with roughly 20k savings but again that can quickly disapear if we get no job and stuck renting a place at 700+ pw! Your number of bedrooms along with other factors will likely dictate your cost of rent. Obviously location, property condition etc will also be big factors in this, so you really have to decide what is the most important and work your budget around that. I'm sure you can get a lovely 3 bedroom house in somewhere like Spearwood etc for maybe $600 per week and then again get a 1 bed apartment in Central Perth for a similar price. So it's all down to your own specific criteria and personal choice. The $700 per week is for a furnished short term rental hence the highish price. My girlfriend and I have set a budget of $550 per week unfurnished for a rental and there is plenty of nice options out there. That would be based on areas that are closeish to my work and have at least 2/3 bedrooms. You've got a good budget certainly but as you say that could go quick if you're not working. We're due to move over in 10 days on WHV's initially so if you've any questions you need help with give me a shout and I'll try help as best I can. Although I'm not in Perth, so sure there will be plenty of people with better information than myself. Good Luck anyway.
smurphy49256
Thanks for the information kyle! Looks like your plan is similar to ours, and from scotland aswell! have you got a job sorted already? we definately understand that size and location are key factors on price! I just want to make sure my mind set is ready without any surprises of major billing costs with renting a property! What is you plans accommodation wise for your initial few weeks when you arrive? Some hotels seem very pricey but i have been told this can be due to the mining/ oil industry using a lot of rooms for employees!
Skit78
Hi, you can have a look on gumtree and maybe rent a room in a shared house untill you find some where else.
Nic964
Another option is to go unfurnished, and pick stuff up here. The further away from Perth you go, then prices drop, $350 is a very realistic figure for a 3x1 house. Then just go to Gumtree, with the number of migrants here in WA, people are allways moving overseas, or just accross Australia, and don't take their stuff, so you see lots of gagage sales, and people offering stuff for free, just to get rid of it. We've picked up nice wardrobes, beds etc all for the cost of some petrol. Another alternative for you anyway. Nick
CookieCrumble
I must admit it has been a while since I've been looking at rental prices and the news has been suggesting there is more supply at the moment so you should be able to find something cheaper. Obviously that $700 pw figure is for a short-term rental - they are always going to be expensive because of the nature of them. Airbnb is a good option for finding a room to stay in until you find your feet, I wouldn't recommend committing to a longer rental until you have jobs and know that you want to stay in Perth. If you go out of the western suburbs and the CBD you will find cheaper larger rentals, but as a young couple only here on WHV's I wouldn't be moving outside the more lively areas (and I also use the term 'lively' loosely - this is Perth after all!) kylel39
Thanks for the information kyle! Some hotels seem very pricey but i have been told this can be due to the mining/ oil industry using a lot of rooms for employees! Hello there, Sorry in the delay, I didn't realise you'd commented. Yeah I've been offered a job, initially coming out on my WHV and if both the company and myself are happy then a view to proceed with sponsorship - so landed lucky I suppose with that. Accommodation wise we've not got much set in stone to be honest. We're staying with a friend for the first few nights but I'm not really wanting to stay with them any longer than a week or so 1. so not to impose as I don't know them that well and 2. they're down in Mandurah so quite a bit away - very nice of them to do so though. After that we'll try sort a short term room or rental to let for 2 weeks or so, seems there's plenty on gumtree etc. But watch as I was sending emails to adverts on gumtree but turns out gumtree Australia blocks emails outwith Oz. One way around that would be to use a fancy VPN or whatever but we're just going to wait until we arrive and sort something. After that we'll look for a long term rental once we know what my girlfirends situation is with work in terms of location - just so one of us doesn't have miles to travel. I would certainly avoid hotels, Airbnb is a good shout and allows you to book well in advance. We thought about that but just eventually decided to just play it by ear when we arrive.
