Rough costs of exporting car, too much??!

It depends how much you normally spend on cars. I run older cars (5-10 years old), of which there are plenty, and they really arent expensive. I used Gumtree, and with the migrant workforce, then people are wanting to sell cars quickly, so you can haggle. $5K is plenty for a nice Falcon, or Commodore, which are great for Aus roads. thats about the same cost as importing one.

My thoughts anyway.

Hello

We have just brought over our Volvo XC90, it cost us about £3,500 in total and to be completely honest, we would not do it again, we had to do a lot of the leg work ourselves before physically handing over the car at Southampton, my husband had to take a day off work to deliver the car as you cannot drop it off on Saturdays. Then there was quick a bit of running around to get it legally road worthy here, which again was handy that my husband was not working as even though someone else could have done the running around you do pay for it. As said above unless it is something very special to you, I would not bother. We brought a 3 year Fiesta off Gumtree within a week of us arriving for me to run around in and it was quite straight forward.

Good luck with the move.

Hi Mike

Know the feeling, we were going to bring our two cats and it was going to cost us of £6,000 for the pair of them with everything included. The vet advised us that one of them would most probably not make the flight, she suffered with stress and could not face strangers so it was a very sad decision to rehome them both (they were brother and sister) and it broke all our hearts to do so.

When do you fly out and where are intending to stay.

Exciting times ahead of you.

Hi,

Yeah, its a Vectra SRI diesel, 56 plate and in good condition. Just thought it would be cheaper, but doesn't appear to be!!

I didn't realise I'd be on the ball with a diesel Vauxhall.

Diesel isn't popular in Perth for normal cars (4x4s where long range is required is a different story). It's not subsidised (or taxed less) like the UK, so there isn't the savings to be made. Over east small cars seem more popular (more european), over west it's still big V8s and big SUVs.

Also the Vectra wasn't a popular car so getting parts might be an issue. We have the local Cruze (which was a rebadged Daewoo I think) which is about the same size and sold a lot. Also the Falcon/Commodore is more popular (but sales are dropping).

Looking on CarSales (like autotrader) and this is the newest, and for under $9k, it's bloody cheap. I also can't see anything later than a 2005.

Hi Sarah, sorry to hear that. Its a horrible and tough decision, pets are part of the family. Were still unsure, if its a good idea to bring the dog. He's 13 this year and the vet said, its 50/50 if he would make the flight...not much help!!!

Looking to move to Mandurah, have to due to visa restrictions. Hoping to be there by June 2014 at the latest, putting the house up in the next week or two, fingers crossed it sells!!

How about you, are you there yet? Or have you also decided on where to go?

Its only worth bringing a car if you intend to bring a top of the range car or classic or if you are aiming to keep it for years to come I think. We have thought long and hard about it and will be bringing our VW Passat as we will be keeping it as our family car until it give out (10-15 years at least!). My husband is also very good with his hands and will do the servicing and minor maintenance on it himself. We only made our decision once we had a quote from a shipping company and had had a look at the prices for the same car in Perth (shocking to say the least!). Estimate is below but we will be shipping the car within our container so the first two items on the quote are not applicable. Car value here is £7.5k and price of equivalent in Perth is $18-22k. Still not sure if we will do the paperwork ourselves our use agents....

-- shipping costs --

$1,556 ocean freight & export customs

$1,200-$1,600 customs, quarantine & port fees

$275 Australian Customs vehicle valuation

$444 import duty

$1,037 GST

-- road registration costs --

$880 ADR compliance

$150 roadworthy requirements

$907 registration (12 months)

$0 stamp duty (exempt in WA)

-- other costs --

$50 import approval application

$990 Iron Lady Imports fee ('A' Package)

Hi

See the grief of bringing the car is already getting to you!!!!

We arrived 9 weeks ago and the time has flown past so quick, but we have done so much, we could now do with an all inclusive sit round the pool and do nothing holiday. We first came to Wembley Downs with our holiday let and fell in love with the area, could not quite afford the rents in that area so have moved a couple of streets over to Scarborough, which is still very expensive, but it is in the catchment of Churchlands High School, which is where we wanted our children to go to and love the place. Its a 20 min leisurely stroll to the beach where there are a couple of very nice cafes and of course the beach. I have never been one for the ocean but I can now spend hours just sitting watching the waves, I also feel that I always want to be near the sea now, dont now why, but everyday when it comes into view I love it. We can also see it from our bedroom window (that is when its not raining, which it has done every day since we moved in).

That's what the vet said about our cat and she was only 3 years old, it really did break out heart to say goodbye to them but we found that lots of the houses we were looking at renting did not take pets here, so once we buy our own home we will be buying a puppy and a kitten. We walked past a pet shop the other day and there were 5 puppies in the window, I had to race pass otherwise I would have been buying them all. So I know its a hard decision you will have to make.

Good luck with everything and just ask me a question and I will try and help you.

Hiya,

My car is a Vectra SRI, managed to get an insurance quote, valued it at $10,000!!. Thought this was ok, but if cant get diesel parts etc, will be money wasted!!. It seems really expensive, knew it would cost a little, but this much..arrgh!!

Don't bring it. Seriously, just don't.

Don't be fooled by comparable values, it will be viewed with mistrust and you'll waste thousands getting it here and you'll never see anything like a return on it. As SJT says, factor in all the stress and hassle, cost your time in to the process and you'll realise it will not be worth it.

If it were something special (no offence intended), or a classic then perhaps but make a break from the old, get here and you may find your needs change anyway.

We were going to bring our camper but we're so glad we didn't, we just wouldn't use it. We did loads of camping in it in the UK but here we need a 4x4 and a camping trailer and the bus would have sat in the drive.

We are moving out end of November and was planning on taking my Mercedes vito van (6 seater as have wife, 2 kids plus dog) thought this would be ideal out there. But am having second thoughts reading everybody's comments on this thread. Any advice would be appreciated

Hi Sarah,

Kind of weird to say this, but its nice to know someone else has experienced this and know what were feeling. Going to have to make some really hard decisions, my family have taken it hard, my wife daren't tell hers yet!. Got so much to do and just want to get there, as soon as we can. House is going up for sale in 2 weeks, need a quick sale!

Glad to hear your doing well and enjoying life there. Hope the weather has improved, was awful when we activated our visa 2 weeks ago!!

Hi Mike

Weather is still awful, we had another storm last night and the kids are going surfing this morning, that should be fun in the wind and rain.

Its important to know that others feel the same otherwise at some points you will think you are going mad. My family were brilliant about it when we told them, but Pete's got a little bit funny, his brother would not talk about it right up until the week we left. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions whether they are big or small and I will try and help. You will have mixed emotions all the way right up until you get on that plane, and even some after you have landed, but if you don't give it a go you will always be wondering what it is like. Time will fly and you will soon be out here.

We are debating what to do with our cat. He is a 3 year old stunningly handsome British Blue. He cost a fortune to buy but will cost an obscene £2000 to bring him over. I would feel wicked not taking him but I know we can find a fab home for him within our family. The fact renting with a cat could be a prob is going against him too. I also keep talking about getting a dog, so maybe that would ease the pain at a later date. Nothing is easy, is it?
