portlaunay
Following the excellent book thread, what about new movies? Rate them out of 10. I watched The Hunt last night, a Danish film with the very brilliant Mads Mikkelsen. It's about a Nursery school teacher wrongly accused of the sexual abuse of one of his students. Amazingly sad and superbly acted film, it really demonstrated the devastating effect something like this could have on someone and their community. It wasn't easy watching but I loved it. 9/

StraighttothePoint
Into the Wild. Written and directed by Sean Penn. It is based on the travels of Christopher McCandless and his life spent in the Alaskan wilderness in the early 1990s. A true story about a young man who wanted to live freely with no ties to the world, no money in his pocket and to travel from southern USA to Alaska just because he could. It highlights so much that is wrong with our world and also so many good things that we just take for granted. Emile Hirsch stars and the soundtrack was by the brillliant Eddie Vedder, lead singer of Pearl Jam. Amazing story and every song a winner. Nearly a 10 out of 10 to be honest. Fantastic film and a superb soundtrack. My son's been trying to learn Rise on the uke for ages. He's so determined. I've promised once he can do it we'll make an Into the Wild type music video (minus the bear, and snow, and other stuff) I thought it said so much about the human spirit; our creativity, adventure, resourcefulness and nurturing and caring nature. Ultimately I think it's a story about connection; how, despite his extraordinary drive and desire to live a solitary existence in the wilderness, he realised it was largely an empty experience if there was no one to share it with. That's what I think anyway.

If your son is struggling with that song tell him to check out a website called ukulelehunt as there is a slightly easier version transposed there. Also check out a website called scorpexuke which is a guy in Oz with loads of great songs to play. Sorry not meaning to hijack a movie thread with Ukulele guff! portlaunay
There's a new Jake Gyllenhaal/Hugh Jackman film coming out soon that I'm looking forward to called Prisoners. (Also with the brilliant Terrence Howard) I think the trailer is a little misleading, it looks suspenseful and dramatic but there's a hidden story to JG's character and, although it's a different director, I think it will be a little like another JG film Zodiac. The trailers for that made it appear like a fast paced thriller when it was actually steadfastly glacial, moving forward as and when it damned well pleased but with extraordinary force (and I liked it).
