On arrival ..To Do List

Bobo and all,

We will be arriving in Perth two weeks from yesterday - OMG (as the kids say!). Our UK 'To Do List' is still fairly significant.

I will be watching your post with interest for any top tips to add to the Australia list. Top things on the list already are pretty much as per the advice from cjbchris - medicare, activate bank account and tax file number.

Regarding mobile phone contracts, I already have a PAYG SIM as I was keen to have an Australia mobile number for my CV/Resume to help with job hunting - most advice seems to be to stay on PAYG which is fine as I already have a phone. Could anyone please confirm whether things are similar in Australia in terms of the ability to move shop around and change contract, but keep the same mobile phone number (porting)?

We will be staying in a serviced apartment for the first few weeks, so looking for a rental property will be high on our to do list. Because of this, we won't need to sort out home telephone/internet/cable TV provision straight away, but I wonder if anyone has any advise/experience in this area?

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far - all good stuff!

Regards,

S.

Exciting times!

Yes you can port a prepaid mobile number if you later go to postpaid.

I personally wouldn't bother with a home phone unless you are going to make lots of landline calls.

Internet service is very hit and miss depending where you end up living. Telstra on the whole will be the best as the others just rent the service from them anyway.

Freeview TV is ok for us, we had Foxtel but so expensive and I reckon only good if you watch a lot of sport.

Don't forget to bring a copy of your visa as you'll need to show it a lot.

More over come with an open positive attitude and you'll fit in just fine ;-)

Hi Sapper59 - curious how you managed to get a prepaid Australian SIM? Did you buy over Internet or pick up when you where there last?

I too would like an Australian number for job hunting and to use whilst we are out there in Dec (on activation visit).

Regards,

David.

Hi David

I opened a bank account from the uk with a well known australian bank ( three letters) and they sent me a prepaid sim, it should have had $10 credit on it but when i actiated it it only had $5, but hey it was free. Only issue is you really need to activate online as mine wouldnt let me activate using the mobile itself,

Chardy,

Thanks for the advice - we definitely have a positive attitude and are really looking forward to our new life in WA.

DavidM,

We were in Oz to validate our Visa in Feb and got our SIM from in-country. I think that the bank account method suggested by TGB could be the best option for you. Good luck.

Regards,

S.
