Medicals expire after one year. A lot of visas use the date of medical or police check (whichever is the earliest) as the date the visa runs from you would then have 12 months to validate your visa. When people do their medicals early - they run the risk of being given a short validation time (I think over the years the shortest we've had on here is about 3 months for someone who front loaded). Example - Medicals November 2013, PC December 13, Visa Grant Feb 14 - you would be asked to validate your visa by November 2014 - if you do not validate then your visa expires.
