portlaunay
Its called progress Do people still store food in salt instead of refrigerating it Do people still have provisions delivered by horse and cart Do people still walk to the fields to work or use one of them combustable engined things I could go on...... And the more modern reverse cycle inverter driven ac systems are very efficient, and if installed and maintained correctly help clean the air and help allergy and asthma sufferers a lot. But of course some people wouldnt let facts get in the way:laugh: And as for them poor souls having to live in those new fangled boxes in the sand. To them it is there home and maybe they are not snobs and dont want to live in an old house. I have lived in a 200 year old cottage and also a new build with good insulation and an efficient heating/cooling system and I know which I prefered. That's excellent. An argument for the efficiency of a/c versus the efficiency of not consuming anything. Some may say that all of those examples you give as progress are nothing of the sort, I suppose it just depends on your perspective. I'd be very interested to read of the 'facts' that you speak of, particularly the evidence base for how a/c helps allergy and asthma sufferers (genuinely I would) Converse to your argument I was always of the opinion that the snobs were the ones in the shiny concrete cubes. Every day's a school day I guess, who knew I was a snob?
7cdb
I love this site...... When have facts ever been relevant So by twisting your words, folk who live in old houses are snobs.... Love it.... You are right though progress is what is called cdb and yes of course there are arguements for the new systems. It would be daft not to acknowledge that and you are right to put forward another view point. It is what makes balanced threads and more enjoyable reading / banter on these topics. All through these threads all of us, or most of us anyway, are saying everyone is different and that based on various options it will be up to each of us to do what we can to keep cool / warm and I guess that also menas in the end how we pay for that as well. Unfortunately I earn next to nought so cannot afford a new fangled box in the middle of whoop, whoop but for those that can though, well done Sorry I can't see you in the dark Will you light some more candles for us

Walkabout
well we saw them both, the one with air conditioning was awful, we kept trying to tell ourselves that we 'could' live there, but to be honest I dont think I could, it was really small and I honestly dont think we would get our stuff in it! the second one was much much better, but obviously no air con, I think we will go for it as it is in the catchment for the school that we really like (and the kids really like) but I guess time will tell if we get it or not, I think someone else was going to put an application in as well so we will just have to wait and see. If we get it we will look for some portable air com units I think. Sadly there are not currently any other options for places in the right catchment, so we might have to go for plan b! ...I will keep you posted
SJT
Hi Weston Clan We found that, because we had a particular High School in mind, it limited what was available to us. And we had to compromise on outdoor space, we literally have room for a table and chairs and that is it, and we have three kids!!! On the plus side of that though, I don't get the noise when sitting in the garden reading a book as they have to go to the park to play football. Whereabouts are you looking at. As you said you can always get portable air conditioning units. We thought someone was applying for the house we were going for as well, but it was not true and we were the only applicants, and the house had been empty since March, so we were lucky and got it, but they did keep us waiting for an answer for a couple of days. Good luck and I will keep my fingers crossed for you.
