Zillion questions

Hi, can anyone give me any help/advice with the following:

1. How much roughly does it cost to ship household goods, plus a car over from England? Can anyone recommend a good removal firm? How long does shipping usually take?

2. Those that have emigrated, have you found rental accommodation prior to moving? If so, who with. Also, are most rentals furnished or unfurnished?

Thank you so much

Sally x

Can't help with cost - it was a long time ago that we moved but it was over 3,000 GBP. Shipping takes 10 - 12 weeks

We were able to find accommodation, and some people advertise lets on here, most people book a holiday let for 3 - 4 weeks and then find something when they get here.

Hi Sally it is very unusual to find a furnished rental place here. It is also difficult to rent a place when you are not here as it is a requirement that you view the place prior to submitting a rental application (through agents anyway). I would be reluctant to rent long term without viewing first anyway. As Ali said most people would do a short term holiday let while they look around for a long term rental.

Hi Sally,

We have shipped a 20ft container and it has cost us about £3500, but no car, we did look into it but I cant remember the costs there is a company called Iron Lady that we asked and they were really helpful. As for how long we have been quoted 7-9 weeks, but we will see when it actually arrives. There are a number of companies and we got 3 quotes and then went with the one that we were happiest with, Pickfords and john mason seem to get good write ups on here, but everyones experience will be different!

For accommodation, we found a short term furnished holiday let and have just secured a long term rental, for us it gave us a chance to look around areas and schools and see where we thought we wanted to be. we found our holiday let through holidaylettings.co.uk, but many others use Oz house rentals or stayz I believe. the holiday let is furnished and we booked it for a month, although we will have a 2 week overlap with our long term place, it should just give us time to sort out moving over and getting stuff.

Hope that helps!

Hi there, we are emigrating in July. I will be checking out Iron lady for the shipping Weston Clan.. did they come and pack it all, or did you? are there any extra insurances etc needed or do they cover that. We have that decision to make.

With regard to lettings, we went over to validate our visas in August and were then better placed to make a decision on school which then - to be honest, dictated the area in which to live. We found a 4 x 2 furnished holiday let which we have for 5 weeks. To give you a price indication, the best we could find which was reasonable was around $1000 a week. The lets can go up a lot more depending on areas, ocean view, size of property etc so it really is worth shopping around.

I hope that this helps and loads of luck with your plans:biggrin:

Hi Zeboradeb,

As far as I am aware Iron lady only do vehicle shipping, and as we decided not to take ours in the end I have no idea how they handle the process. We have used pickfords, they packed everything for us (we needed to dismantle a few things first and flat pack them). I will let you know how it went after our container arrives! As others have said before on other threads though the packers are ruthless and if its not bolted down it gets packed - no questions asked! you do have to pay insurance on top, we went with LP instead of the shippers own as it was much cheaper for us. There are also customs fees to pay this end, I know Crown include it in their quote, others dont, so its worth asking.

We have settled really well so far, our kiddies are only primary school age so I think we have much more choice in terms of areas than perhaps if you kids are older. We had a short term let in Duncraig (which we really like) its a 3 x 1 and was $800 per week but it sleeps 5 of us (2 of the kids share one of the bedrooms- which short term is fine). We have a long term rental in Kingsley, and you are right the school pretty much was the deciding factor. We looked NOR and SOR and decided that we preferred NOR, but I am glad we came with an open mind and we looked at places in both. We also then looked around a load of areas and schools, partly governed by what we knew we could afford (for example we didnt look at the areas very close to the city with rents of over 1000 per week as we knew we couldnt afford it) so we looked at the Hillarys, Sorrento, Dungraig, Kingsley, Mullaloo, type block and have gone with the place that we liked the school the best (and were fortunately able to get a house in catchment as well) we did have back up plans of different areas for if we couldnt get a house though, which I think helped.

We havent had any real surprises (we have had 3 redback nests, another spider I couldnt identify and a random lizard family living inside, which has been fun!) but everyone we have met has been really nice and helpful, our landlady on our short term let has been lovely and really helpful, she even gave us a reference which is I am sure the only reason we got given our long term place!

Food is expensive, and it is taking a bit of getting used to the whole shopping around thing, you dont get everything from one place you go to a variety to get the best deals at the time, I am sure it will become second nature soon!

Kids started at school yesterday, which has been really good for them, I think they were really anxious about what it would be like so being able to get going with it has helped them, they had great days yesterday and are excited about going back today, so you cant ask for anything more really!

We bought a cheap run around car, which we hope will keep us going for a year or so and we will be able to walk to the station from our house so hopefully will only need 1 car.

So, so far it is all good! Jobs are the next challenge, but hubby has a few irons in the fire at the moment, so hopefully (fingers crossed and a following wind) we should be OK (we will find something between us I am sure)

When do you fly?
