3 days into our new adventure

Well, we have arrived in Perth to start our new adventure and thought we'd pass on some of the trials and tribulations leading up to getting here.

We both quit our jobs at the end of Oct so we could focus on moving. We decided to rent out our house so we would have somewhere to return if things didn't work out. This meant we had to get the whole house renovated and hopefully rented out in 4 weeks.

Week 1. Cracked tiles on roof repaired, garden cleared and 2 large trees cut down. Kitchen units and bath ordered. The slow process of wading through 16 years of "stuff" started. Getting quotes from shippers and checking we had things in order. Decorator started on the bedrooms. Several trips to the tip and charity shop.

Week 2. Kitchen started but bits missing so could not be finished as expected. New bath fitted. New bedroom and staircase carpet chosen and ordered. More wading through "stuff" and skip ordered for the renovations. 2 Letting Agents contacted to discuss rental options. Curtains and blinds chosen.

Week 3. Shippers booked and insurance looked into. Kitchen units finished. More "stuff" sorted.

So to this week just gone...........All upstairs renovation and decorating completed over the weekend.

Monday - Carpet fitters arrived to fit carpets and kitchen flooring. Kitchen and dining room being sanded prior to decoration. Viewing of house by "prospective Renter" keen to view the property "as is". More "stuff" sorted and given to charity shop.

Tuesday - Shippers came to pack our worldly goods, Electrician fitted new lights in kitchen. Kitchen and dining room started being painted. Yet more "stuff" sorted. "Prospective Renter" came to measure rooms. Began packing our cases. Stayed in a hotel as we had nothing left in the house.

Wednesday - Finished packing cases and got rid of any "stuff" we had left. "Prospective Renter" contacted Agent to say he wanted to rent the house before Christmas so off to their office to sign paperwork. Kitchen and Dining Room decorated. Lounge empty for decorator to start sanding down Travelled to Heathrow to stay in another hotel.

Thursday - Travelled to airport.

Friday - Arrived in Perth to stay with friends.

Saturday - Started recovery process.

We could not have done this without the support of family, friends and the guys working on our, soon to be rented, house. These guys have promised to clear anything left from the house and garden and will send us pics when done.

The moral of this tale is that you can get so much done in a short period of time but try to leave as much time as possible as it helps the blood pressure.

Today we opened our bank account, applied for our TFN's, applied for Medicare and started to look for mobile deals so still trying to find time to relax!!!!!!!!!

Scarborough is a lovely place to people watch and relax and unwind. Get a take away coffee from Peters cafe and sit at the amphitheater and watch the World go by. You must be exhausted, now its time to chill and relax as everything else will fall into place.

  • 3 weeks later...

Hi Again

Thought it was time for a 3 and a half week update.

Week 1) Completed opening bank accounts, applied for medicare and TFN numbers. Made appoint with Ahpra for my registration. Appointment with doctor to get jabs for extra immunisations re nursing. Arranged SIM for Australian tel number. Went to the beach several times. Phoned potential employer for informal chat and was asked to call in for a visit. Had BBQ at "friends of friends" house in Fremantle.

Week 2) Attended Ahpra to confirm ID and finalise process. Went to the beach several times. Visited Fremantle hospital for my informal chat. 25 minutes later was asked to complete an application form and offered a short term temporary contract to start later in January. The "friends of friends" in Fremantle let down by dog/house sitters. Offered to help as they are away over Christmas for 4 weeks. OH contacted by a different "Friend of Friends" re informal chat about a job in a used car dealership. Offered job but not what OH is looking for. Had BBQ at another "friends of friends" in Perth overlooking the river. OH went to third day of cricket.

Week 3) Started application process for job. OH started applying for Jobs. "Friends of friends" in Freo asked if we would dog/house sit for whole period, 5 bed house with pool. Now they're our friends! Went to the beach several times. OH asked to supply details for a job and references asked for. OH met yet more "friends of friends" for an Xmas drink and asked to forward CV for another potential job in Jan.

Week 3 1/2) Moved into our dog/house sit and had our own BBQ. Walked dogs several times (new experience for us). Swam in the pool several times.

Now its Xmas and New year. Will be having friends over to "ours" for Xmas morning then just the dogs and us (and the pool). Looks like it will a quiet New Year but, then again, who knows what might happen.

Happy Christmas and New Year to all on Perthpoms
