Lou8670
Thanks all...I think we're going to go with Pickfords as they have an operation in Perth but Whites were offering us a months free delivery before shipping which made them slightly cheaper. However, our stuff is still very likely to make it there before us and will have to go into storage anyway and that's where Pickfords have the advantage as they can store it for us whilst we sort ourselves out. Just got to make sure my SIL can clear it through customs for us
Akasully2
Do pickfords charge to hold it once there? Do there just keep it in the original container or something? What would whites do?
Lou8670
Pickfords operate in Perth and can deliver to store. Apparently they quote a figure to take it into store based on weight. Our 20ft container has been estimated at $400. Then they charge per 28 days storage...I think it was $215 per month. Whites don't operate in Perth; they use an agent but can deliver to store; you just have to find someone to store it. I'm hoping we can take some things out of the container and continue to hold the rest in store but as it only takes 8-10 weeks to get to Fremantle our stuff is likely to arrive before us so it will all need to go to store initially. I think they unload it from the container hence the charge based on weight. Lou
Druid
I have absolutely no time for Pickfords, I used them when I relocated from Johannesburg to the UK, what a nightmare, never again, I opted for the 'shared container' 3 months later my stuff was still in Johannesburg, I had to go over and get them to ship the container. Lou8670
I have absolutely no time for Pickfords, I used them when I relocated from Johannesburg to the UK, what a nightmare, never again, I opted for the 'shared container' 3 months later my stuff was still in Johannesburg, I had to go over and get them to ship the container. I think shared containers can be a bit of nightmare as they have to wait for someone else with the cubic feet to fill the remaining space. Hopefully we won't have the same problem as we are taking a whole container for ourselves; although I wouldn't mind if they could delay our shipment 2-3 months; it would save me money on storage Edited January 8, 2014 by Lou8670

I think you also got to bear in mind Pickfords will vary from country to country as they are run independently. Also, Lou I wouldn't want to take anything away from Pickfords, but the offer is still there for storage if it helps, I know ever penny counts? We are commercial movers but always willing to help a fellow PP and would only charge for space used.
Bridges
This has been an interesting read. We are at this point to due to move Jan 23rd but not leaving UK until may so stuff going in to store for a while. We've gone with john mason, seemed reasonable and know someone who has used them and given good reviews so here's hoping! Re stuff to take, we are in the process of going through everything to check what we're taking, been through the attic which was a chore. There's stuff in there I've not seen for years but still can't bring myself to part with it! Some of its a bit dirty/dusty, am i going to have to clean it all?! Good tip on wrapping in clingfilm after cleaning, JM actually recommend it so customs get a burst of freshness! Still need to fill in all my forms. Re insurance, I've been advised to just cover large/expensive stuff as it can be difficult to claim anyway (and in reading the t&c looks like they can explain away most damages so long as they're careful so may be some truth in it?!) Look forward to reading about when peoples stuff arrives x
flatpack
For those that are interested in prices, we got the first one back today. A 20ft container for £3030.00 or a 40ft container to put the car and our gear in for £4499.00 with White and company! Has anyone heard of 1st Move International? They have quoted by email without coming to the house £3875.00 for a 40ft container but we have to book it now BUT pay nothing until a week before the container is due to leave. JenPen
Thanks for the quotes - V helpful x I haven't heard of them but I would be scared about paying the week before it leaves - I would need more reassurance etc, but that is just me! Lou8670
Our quotes were both £1500 more than yours...must be the extra leg that's costing an arm and a leg!
flatpack
Where do you live? What is the extra leg you mention? I'm assuming you live in Ireland why is there an extra leg? It seems pretty simple to me, a container goes to the port, it's loaded onto a ship and then transported to Oz. Living in Ireland is no further than living in the UK. I think they're trying it on. Crown are coming tomorrow, bet they're a grand dearer!
Lou8670
Not Ireland, in fact the boat doesn't have to go as far as that, but I've whittled them down in price so I'm not sure they could do a lot better...I had one quote for £5700 for a 20ft container and they were very rude when I tried to renegotiate the price. Unfortunately it's not just the removal companies; the shipping companies are also a problem...there were 2 until one went bankrupt last year So much for competitive prices! odies
Lou why will they not wait the 2/3 months ? once you have chsen etc do they tell you when it will leave the uk ? I had not put that into my thoughts. was hoping to sell the shop ,put the house on the market get the visa sell the house and send the container virtually as we were ready to go.Will this not work ? Akasully2
I emailed 1st move international for an appt. on their web site they show that they ship cubes of stuff all wrapped up as well as regular shipping. They called me back but I couldn't understand the woman who was speaking to me. I thought she might be calling me from india. Turns out it was Croydon or somewhere. she kept asking if I wanted a cube. In the end I gave up, had no faith in a company I couldn't communicate with. Crossed them off my list. Had Bishop's move round today. Whilst I have used them before for a local move and could not fault them, I will not be using them for an international move unless they are cheap. The guy was nice but didn't have the specialist knowledge of PSS who quoted before. He thought taking my cattle skulls would be fine as they were old! What at I have discovered though is that whilst we all compare prices based on the size of the container, it does not take into account the type and amount of objects we put in them. More stuff, bigger price, same container. So far PSS said we had 1400 cu feet but bishops said 1800 cu feet, for the same stuff. My head is spinning. Chardy
We were quoted between 1100 and 1450 sq.ft by 3 companies, so right on the max of a 20ft container. In the end it all fitted with space for a couple of bodies left so was nearer the bottom end. Just as well as it was 3300 pounds for the 20 but over double for the 40ft - we didn't want a shared container!
Lou8670
Odies....we can't give notice till the house is sold and we are both are on 3 months notice. We are going to move into a furnished holiday let until we go but our stuff is being packed up and shipped straight away. We looked at it going to store here but it was going to be £52 a week and another £1200 so we've decided to let it go and store it the other end. I'm glad to hear we are not the only ones who have had extraordinary differences in the estimated cubic volume. We've been quoted 1500, 1400 and 1200 cubic feet. I don't believe them, especially the 48 boxes!!! We only have a couple of boxes of kitchen stuff and there are 5 of us so we'll be taking advantage of the 5 x 30kg checked (max we can take as we've valid edited already), 5 x 7kg cabin, 5 x laptop, 5 x overcoat etc....that's probably all of the kids clothes packed and most of ours except for school uniforms which we obviously won't be bringing! Akasully2
Because we were between sizes we thought we would max out on the big container. Didn't realise they charge you extra to put in it, even if you have the space. Pooh. We now have furniture on order. Hopefully we will make it up on the savings of buying it here. Driving my OH nuts. Yesterday I went to re-look at what we had ordered in the shop. Changed my mind on the colour of the oak. Rustic oak versus natural oak. Prefer a lighter look. Even dragged one of our old dining room chairs and an occasional table in there to make sure I the new stuff looked nothing like the old colour. I think the salesman thought I was nuts too. Kept offering up bits of furniture up to other stuff and staring at it. Kept trying to imagine it in the bright sunshine of oz instead of the greyness of the uk. sunflower
Hello everyone, We are planning to move to Perth in beginning of April. I have some questions regarding shipping. 1st question: Has any pet owner had any problems with dog/cat hair on your stuff? I'll do my best to clean the furniture thoroughly but if they find dog hair on the chairs or on our clothes, would there be a big fine? It's not like our dog sheds a lot, but i'm still worried. 2nd question: Is there any limitation regarding wood furniture? There is some unvarnished timber in some connecting parts of the closets and table. Also the feet of the dining table is not varnished. Is that ok or should we get it fixed? Thanks
Akasully2
Hi, we are going out in April too and have just had the agents round for quotes. For your peace of mind ask them. They will probably wet themselves laughing but I'm sure they have heard it all before from neurotic movers! As I understand it regularly manufactured wooden furniture is fine. What they wouldn't like is the hand carved African type ornaments or old furniture with wood worm. If your table came from a Africa and has wood worm, then you have had it! sunflower
Thanks Akasully, You made me laugh! I know I may sound neurotic. Just want to make sure Our dinner table is an ordinary one. But I have a round coffee table from the 50s and 3 hand made Syrian coffee tables. All 4 were my father's gifts, I really would like to keep them. I hope the removal guys will give a proper answer. Bridges
We've got the packers in tomorrow and don't feel ready at all. Think it doesn't help that you don't pack yourself as the house still looks odd"normal" but this time.tomorrow May be shrink wrapped! I've heard they're like a bit of a whirlwind and if its not nailed Down it will be packed! Just hope I've managed to set aside all the stuff we don't want packing. I've spent the past couple of weeks sorting but still scared customs are going to find something I've missed!
Nikkis2000
Good luck bridges! Just keep the kettle boiling and they'll be more than happy. They do work really quickly and it's amazing to see all your stuff wrapped up in brown paper but just take a deep breath and remember it's all part of the adventure..... And as soon as they've gone open a bottle of something to take the edge off ;0)
Happy little Vegemite
Shipping stress!!! I totally agree!!! We are currently trying to figure out how far in advance to send everything. And the list of things coming vs. staying changes every minute of every day so I will be glad once it's gone, too late to change our mind then! Jo80
Hi Guys Does anyone know the rough price charged for shipping bikes? We've sold most of our belongings but want to take 2 bikes and a few boxes as it should work out cheaper than replacing them there.
