Hi everyone

first time I have used this site and really nice to see other people doing what we are doing. We have also just booked our tickets to emigrate, (4 days ago:wink:). We fly out on July 29th 2014 from Manchester. We have arranged 4 weeks stay in a holiday let in Baldivis near settlers hill primary school, as that is the school we are interested in for our two children (one girl 9,one boy 4).

we have searched for so long on the Internet to decide what town to narrow it down to and really like the sound of Baldivis. If anyone has also chosen Baldivis, it would be nice to hear your chosen area and reasons etc.

It feels so nice to have a date now as it has taken a long time to arrange everything to move it has felt like a never ending journey.

My husband lee is a quantity surveyor and I'm a hairdresser ( but I'm hoping not to work until the kids are a little older) lee hasn't arranged work for us going as yet but currently looking and hoping to have interviews in place for us getting there.

at the moment we live in Newcastle but flying from Manchester as we think a big wave off from the family at newcastle airport would be too much for the kids, so a nights sleep at a hotel in Manchester hopefully makes things a little better for our big journey to oz!!

Look forward in any replies and to hear your story's. Joanne and lee xx

Welcome to PP.

We are heading out hopefully around the same time as you and are hoping to settle in Baldivis, Waikiki area. We have family who live in Harrington Waters estate. We also liked the burbs further south between Baldivis and Mandurah. We looked around Baldivis and it looked lovely, all very new and lots of new houses being built. There are a few people on here who live in Baldivis and meet ups have been arranged in the park in the middle of the estate.

We have a 9 and 7 year old so similar aged kids.

Have you got much to sort before you go?

Keep in touch as you count down to your big move!

Lou

hi lou

nice to hear from you.its great that you have already been over and seen the place. we also liked waikiki and firstly had our heart set on secret Harbour but after a lot of thought we decided baldivis as you get alot more house for your money, and seemed to have a real family feel about the place!!

we have sold our house and living with my mam and dad. our furniture is in storage and awaiting shipping nearer the time. so with flight and accommodation sorted we have things pretty much done ;-)) (even down to our hire car to take us to manchester heehee)

how about you?

where abouts are you from?

do you have jobs arranged to go to etc?

lee has a few friends dotted around perth and one couple is actually over the UK visiting their family so we are meeting them for drinks on Monday.cant wait to hear their stories.

Hi Joanne

Wow you're very organised! We were over visiting in October but don't have a firm date yet. We have our house on the market and are waiting for it to be sold. Hopefully we won't have to wait much longer. We can't really book flights until then.

We don't have jobs to go to. OH visited a few agencies when we were last over and it really seems like you need to be there on the ground. We will be staying with family when we arrive so that will take some of the pressure off but it's still nerve racking giving up jobs here in the UK for the unknown. We've done it once before and things worked out so I'm sure they will again this time.

There were lots of young families in Baldivis and it was very clean and tidy. It had a lovely family feel and is still growing! So if you don't mind everything being shiny and new I'm sure you'll really like it. There's whole new areas of Baldivis being built with new schools also planned. My SIL and her hubbie have just bought a plot in Baldivis to build and rent out. They're both plods and therefore very particular over which area they buy in so looks like its a good choice.

Lou

We are probably going to fly out of Birmingham or London but are thinking of having a bit of a holiday on the way maybe Thailand or Dubai. We're not quite decided yet.

brilliant that you have family there from day one to help you out and yes soooo scary leaving good jobs and home in uk to start up again , but whole family will benefit a better out-doorsy lifestyle which we crave for sure.

we chose to fly out with Singapore airlines purposely to spend time in changi airport, only for a few hours, not a holiday,.there is so much for the kids there to do to tire them out ie swimming pool with slides and showers to freshen up between flights, cinema, science rooms, butterfly gardens, and a train to take you through the malls as its huge. not mentioning the biggest indoor slide made lol. we found other airlines slightly cheaper but stopped at places like Dubai (which you be brilliant to take a holiday), but not so good just sitting around airport with two kids and not much to amuse.

im sure you'll sell your house in no time and be booking flights soon after. we felt much better once we had a date in stone as like you said the 'no known' is not good. we hope July is a good time to move with it being their winter, give the kids a chance to climatize before the big sun comes ;-)

we thought that jobs would be like you say, easier to find once landed. hoping to have two months of searching and getting to know the place before work, but applying in the meantime.

we are also keeping fingers crossed schools will be easy to get in to, even though we have emailed etc, you have to have to have a fixed address in the catchment to gain place and that slightly worries me if the school in our area is full or something.

Hey, we are heading to the area too, in April, but still need to arrange everything!! Hoping to do this in the next couple of weeks though. I actually came on today to ask people about where the stayed for the short term after landing. Where (website) did you find yours if I may ask? We have 2 boys aged 6 and 10 and I think Baldivis sounds like a great place for making plenty of new friends.

Hi there,

brilliant to hear you are doing the move there too, and even sooner than us :-)!!!

we are renting a holiday let fully furnished for the first 4 weeks until our shipping container arrives. We are renting one on settlers ave which is really close to everything we are wanting to look around for our long term rental once we get our furniture. We found great ones (and most definitely the cheapest ) on a site called ozhouserentals.com they have been great and even arranged for our pick up at airport on the day of our arrival. (Additional cost but competitive price and big enough for all our luggage too)

so have you a job out there to go to or looking when yous land?

Hi Joanne,

I've just noticed you are from Newcastle...we are down the road in Stockton! Thanks for the ozrentals.com tip of the day. I was getting disheartened with other sites, but that one is really easy to use and I've already enquired about 3 possible properties. We haven't got jobs yet, simply hoping for the best once we get there! Elaine x

We are hoping visa will be granted by Xmas this year :-)))

i also want to have saved enough money, I'm thinking of going back to work to get some more money,

scary thought as I've not worked since before I had my girls :-/

We are just deciding wether to sell all of our stuff or keep it and ship it all over.

Think we will sell all of our big stuff and just have a few boxes.

We are taking all our stuff, literally everything we can take. Because once you pay for the shipping you might as well fill as much up as you can, plus be cheaper in the long run. We thought it would be nice for the kids feeling abit of home once we moved.but our friends over there took nothing and are doing great.

the weather will be lovely when you are planning to make the move, we will be moving in their winter time so it can only get better . Gotta be better than our English weather tho.

i will keep in touch and let you know how it goes once we land in July. Hopefully be able to help you with things by then, and nice to know there is two little girls on their way for Katie to play with :cute:.

All very exciting though the thought of the current perth weather makes me feel like I will melt. My poor skin is too used to these miserable cold days. Central Heating bill will well and truly be replaced by Air con bill! I hope you don't get as ripped off for utilities down there as here!

im still in 2 minds wether to take everything, we have a big double fridge freezer, we may move into a house that has no room for it, and the same with our furniture, its all in storage, so im going to have a good sort through in a couple of weeks when scott has the week off. the girls are in bunk beds which they hate, so im wont be bringing that either, I quite like our bed, its a big kingsize and the tv comes out of the end. but not sure how we would ship it :-/

I think it may be better to arrive in july when lauren finishes year 6, it wont be too hot then, but then I will just be excited to arrive whatever time of the year to be honest !

are your children excited about the move ? lauren is super excited !! but my little lucy just tells us shes not going :-(

ye I understand what you mean about furniture , the only thing we aren't taking is our big fridge as thought the same as you, you have to know the area you have for that kind of thing, but think the huge Aussie houses will be quite capable of fitting the rest in :-)

our kids are super excited but our little one, Owen , is too young to understand the distance and assumes family and friends can just pop over on a Wednesday ,as he says, to have tea . Bless him.

it will be hard on them but they will sure love it in the long run. And your little Lucy will settle I'm sure.

that is why we are doing the move in July also. Plus it's not so bad the kids being off school so long in their normal 6 weeks holiday time.and can adjust to the heat xx

Hi Guys

We arrived in July for those same reasons, the kids could finish the school year, then as they would have had six weeks off in the UK, it would not matter if they did not start school for a few weeks and it worked out that they had the six weeks off. Also the pressure was off as they had already completed that school year in the UK so when they came here, as they have to redo a few months they could just take that time to make friends and see how the school work would be different, rather than worrying about grades etc. The weather was 50/50 when we got here, a lot of rain but also a lot of sun. I think it has sort of helped with getting use to the weather, over the weekend it has hit 43 degrees and even though it has been hot, we still went to the beach, although the rest of the time was spent indoors with the air conditioning on.

You have a very exciting adventure ahead of you and I wish you all the luck in the World.

Hi Joanne and Lee. Just wanted to say hello and best of luck on your move to Baldivis. We've been here almost 3 years now (in Australia for 4.5 years total) and the community is really coming along. It's developing so quickly I can hardly recognise it from when we first moved here. We even got a post office finally. We still like the area. We love the kids' school (they're 9 and 5.5) and there doesn't seem to be as much vandalism or crime as in other suburbs we lived in. Sure, it's not perfect by any means but it suits us. We're in Settlers Hills (the newer section) and it has some decent walking areas, lots of parks and playgrounds for the kids. It's fairly quiet. One of the only downsides is the distance from the CBD but then we tend to spend more time on weekends around Rocko and Mandurah anyway.

Anyway, all the best and if you'd like to meet up in July, send me a PM.
