It's going to be a hot one!

Well, just saw the forecast for the weekend and Perth is heading for 43c. That is pretty hot.

So, I thought we could share our tips for dealing with the heat. Might be particularly good for those doing their first Perth summer.

So here are a couple of mine

Have a shower before bed but don't get dried. The water on your skin will help keep you cool

Freeze a water bottle and wrap it in a towel or put it in a couple of pillow cases and use it like an inverted hot water bottle.

Put a ice cube in your dogs water bowl.

Our first summer here and we we are heading to Busso this weekend where it should be a few degrees cooler or we would be camping at Adventure World!! lol!

We are doing adventure world - second time in two weeks and we are a couple in our 40's with no kids! But it's a great place to keep cool and have a bit of fun

I'm pretty new to this heat but I think I've worked it out..

Stay in the shade and drink plenty of fluids. Wear a big hat if you go out and cover up. The wife takes those ice blocks from an esky to bed, they stay frozen longer. For dogs: put some of their favourite treats in a Tupperware box with some chicken stock and freeze it.

In the morning shut the blinds and draw the curtains, open them when, if, the sea breeze comes in - doubt it will much this weekend. As soon as the breeze hits, please hit, then get the windows and doors open and get the house cooled as much as you can. Put on air con in short blasts at that point and run any fans to keep the air circulating. This works to keep the house cooler over long hot periods but only as long as you follow the process each day during the really hot spells which for some can be hard because they do not like the darkness through the house. Up to you but know what we will be doing.

Another vote for Adventure World, we're off there tomorrow. Saturday we'll probably spend the hottest part of the day on the beach covered with factor 50 and rashies.

We have a water cooler in the house which is probably the best thing we've invested in. There's a hammock in the shade in the garden big enough for 4.

One of the advantages of not having a/c is that when it does heat up it's a lot more manageable.

Shady spots in the carparks are always the first to go, even if you have to park miles away from your destination. Sun shields for the car are also a must.

As pea says, keep your fluids up and drip dry after a shower but the coolest place is always at the coast and it's not like it's hard to find a good beach.

I always wonder about people who don't have sun shields on their cars, I know that when we forget to put it up the steering wheel and gear stick would require and oven glove to touch! We are in the habit of using ours all the time now, even if it's not up in the 30's. We also always put our car in the garage each and every time we arrive home, even if we know we are going out again, makes sense to have it in the shade and hardly an effort to push a button for the door to go up.

We have started to leave the curtains closed at the front of the house in a morning and that does make a difference, couldn't have them shut all day though, that would be depressing.

Stock the freezer with ice-pops too! Will be keeping the cats in this weekend I think, daft things will get far too hot outside in their fur coats.

Brilliant ideas from everyone.... but if it is your first time in this excessive heat, please do not underestimate how you will dehydrate in a very short time. You need to drink water constantly... if it is cold it will help more, but even warm water is good. Stay away from alcohol. Stay out of the sun as much as possible but still smother yourselves with sunscreen. The locals just lay low in the heat. So put on your bathers and a baggy tshirt and if you don't have a pool, just get in a cold shower and dry off naturally..... keeping your core body temperature as low as possible will mean that you will cope so much better, especially if the humidity is high. Stay away from starchy food and stick to fruit and veg/salad. A water spray bottle is a brilliant tool... spray your face... your body... spray your animals..... This weekend is going to be a blaster so if you have to go anywhere, just plan to do it as early in the day as you can and if you don't have aircon... visit friends who do!

Remember to watch forma fury family members! They can not often deal with it as well as us.

We will be also making our little fella a doggy ice lolly and on Saturday while we are out we will leave the air con on for him.

Oh and a one to remember for night time as Perth minimum on Sunday is only going to get down to 27. Damned hot night. Keep you internal doors open so that a draft can come through IF there is any breeze.
