Hi

Has anyone been to joondalup area? i'm thinking about moving to clarkson or is there another suburb you wold recomend for a young family which is close to schools and parks etc?

Thanks

Plenty of folks on PP live in and around Joondalup.......Anywhere around there should be fine but you won't know for sure however until you are living there. Remember that if you work in the city then it is a 45 mins+ commute by train and well over an hour in rush hour driving.

hi there, I think any of those areas you mention are full of families, happily living their lives, enjoying what the area has to offer, huge shopping complex in joondy, train service, not far from the beach, lots of other suburbs with similar qualities, suits lots of people but not all. One longstanding member on here Straight To The Point has lived there for quite a while and seems to like it, maybe he will pop on here and give you some informed advice. Not been to Clarkson, but have been to Butler, and it's new shiny clean and I think it's lovely, I can see the appeal for families. Quite a long way from the city though, so good to bear that in mind!

Butler is ok however it is luck of the draw. We live on a cottage block with a laneway of garages at the back and out of the two streets of houses we seem to live opposite the only noisy horrible people! Had two lots of tenants in there and i would describe them both of 'feral'.

The plots opposite are also being built on so its lovely being woken at 6am every morning by builders, trucks etc.

be careful what house you choose! I wouldnt live in clarkson, most parts are a bit rough and the schools have bad reputations.

We are moving to hillarys soon as we have by some small miracle found a lovely house there to rent, but its not any area we would normally be able to afford. Much nicer area so i cant wait! Will also cut 20km off my husbands work commute each way.

my son was due to start kindy in butler this year and when i saw the calibre of some of the parents in his kindy class, lets just say they wouldnt be the kind of people i would want my son hanging out with!!

Before we came we were set on butler purely for affordability. Now its apparent you get what you pay for! This is just my experience, there are plenty people that like it up here though. I hear more uk accents than i do aussie ones.

Joondalup, the old suburb, and the city itself, is ideally situated and has virtually everything on its doorstep except the catchment area does not have a state run high school. However if I was coming from England now, had a young family and / or was on a budget I would head further north.

I'm currently living in Kinross which isn't far from Joondalup City Centre (that's a loose term) at all. I like it up this way, there is probably a few too many expats here for my liking but in some ways it is comforting depending on what you want.

I've only been here a month but like the area and the closeness to Joondalup and the beach.

Straight To The Point makes a decent observation about being on a budget.

It does also depend on what kind of living / accommodation you want. All of the suburbs here and slightly northwards are commutable but the traffic will differ depending what time you leave home, it can be frustratingly stop start on the freeway.

Having a tight budget was exactly how we ended up in butler, practically trinity really.

if you have the budget, spend it getting a place closer to the city, even if its just ten mins closer. We spend our life visiting people who live further south or going south to do things, cant wait to live closer to the things we do most.

but these are things you just cant know until you try it.

good luck!

Belridge SHS is the catchment state high school for the suburb and city centre area of Joondalup.

Which bit is classed as the old suburb? We are possibly looking to move out this way eventually due to the way our jobs have worked out. I'm still not keen on the idea of new build estates so would be keen to look at the older more established parts.

TIA!

The suburb of Joondalup is bordered by Burns Beach Road to the North, Moore Drive to the South, Freeway to the West and Joondalup Drive to the East. It has a good primary school and the usual IGA, bottle shop, bakery etc. It is probably about 20 years old I would say in age so is not your new build suburb.

We were looking at the Burns Beach rd end so good to know we were in the right area! Thanks!

Just be careful because there are several streets in the area that back onto, or are near, BBR that are full of state housing. This is the area where you will could see 4 x 2 houses on the REIWA website, with biggish blocks, that sell for around the 485k to 500k mark. Certainly very good if you want to get into the cheaper area of the old suburb and renovate but risky if you choose the wrong street and then want to try and recoup your capital and investment costs. Upgraded / semi upgraded 4 x 2 houses, on decent sized blocks, away from that area are selling from about $525 upwards without a pool. One opposite me, no pool and needing upgraded just sold for $590k. Old Joondalup suburb is all about the location within it so do as much research as you can would be my best advice. I have lived here for over 10 years now so PM if you have any questions.

So how close is Connolly to Joondalup? Is it touched by the less desirable bits?

What it BBR?

Connolly doesn't have any less desirable bits. Connolly is bordered to the North by Shenton Ave, South by Hodges Drive, East by the Freeway and West by Marmion Avenue. It is a fantastic suburb, I have lived here 8 years. It has a great Primary school. Half the suburb is in catchment for Ocean Reef SHS and half Belridge SHS. Belridge doesn't enjoy the best reputation but it is usually passed around by people who have no actual experience of the school. It has improved dramatically in recent years and has some good programmes and some nice, well mannered children as well as some undesirables but hey which school doesn't. It is a 5 min drive to Joondalup and is also served by a number of buses to both Joondalup and Whitfords Shopping Centre. 5 minute drive to the beach also.

Thanks Arwen. So do you like it there? What is Ocean Reef shs like? What is the nearest beach and what is it like? Is that the one you would head to or do you go further afield? In fact, do the beaches vary much up and down the coast or is it just the same continuos stretch? Thanks for your input, great to hear it from the horse's mouth, so to speak.

Thanks STTP. It probably won't be for a few months but we are just starting to consider our options.

Will PM you when we start looking properly for those roads we need to avoid!!
