Guest Guest6235
Hi all, My wife and I are just waiting for our 5 month old daughter's passport to be returned and then hopefully will be applying for our skilled independent 189 visa. My wife is the main applicant as she is a Secondary School Teacher. Our main concern is can you secure a 6 month rental before leaving the UK without having a job lined up even though we have a certain amount of money in the bank. Apparently for Australia secondary schools don't employ teachers from the UK until you are already living in Oz. We didn't want to be living in a hotel or something like it for 6 months eating our funds away. Also we have read recently that schools in WA are cutting funding to educational jobs so this is now another worry. Can anybody help with this post. Thanks
Guest guest9824
Hi Keefo, I don't think it's impossible to secure a rental before you get here, but the question should be would you want to secure something and pay a deposit/bond without seeing it in the flesh.....Many rental agents wouldn't allow you to secure a long term rental for fear you may not be who you say you are, requiring references, wage slips etc, in turn they also many not live up to your standards, ie, the rental might be in a bad area, pictures may be distorted, quality of fittings and general state of rental may be different to the internet pictures once you actually see it...Caveat Emptor and all that..... Short term rentals/ holiday rentals are different, and seems to be the way people do things when they come to live initially, giving themselves some room to breath and find the right area, for their choice in long term rental. We had family to stay with so it wasn't a problem for us to consider, but I don't think you will find many places will allow you to secure long term on line, if there are some, I would be mindful that they kosher. There has been a reduction in government jobs recently, and that does unfortunately include teaching jobs. Some private schools advertise positions on their own websites, so maybe google schools in the areas you are looking at and check out their websites for employment opportunities. Best of luck to you. Alienmigration
Hi Keefo, Peanuts is spot on! I used to be a Property Manager in Perth and we would never rent to someone who had never visited the property. The tenant has to be happy with what they are getting and it could only be trouble renting to someone sight unseen because once they move in, suddenly they are unhappy with this and that and want this changed and that fixed. Saying that, these days it's a lot different with all the photos online and I'm hoping that if I'm happy with the photos I see and then I send along my Mum to view it on my behalf, I'm hoping they may let me apply from overseas anyway! Good luck!
