GreigT
Hi All, Just wondering if i should take out Travel/Holiday insurance in the uk for going out to Oz? (for short term cover) Or should i wait till i get to Perth and take out medicare? Could someone explain medicare and cost etc? nikkiwd
When you get to OZ register with medicare, you will be covered under the reciprical agreement between the uk and oz. I think most take out additional private cover when over there to cover ambulance and extras that aren't included in medicare.
GreigT
Thanks, Just been reading up on it, Don't think I'm covered for Medicare on my 489 Regional visa. Wondering if my Bank Worldwide travel cover would do?
nikkiwd
The uk and Australia have a reciprocal agreement that citizens of each others countries can get access to healthcare when in the other country. When we were on our working holiday a few years ago my hubby had to have tests on his heart and all were covered through medicare once he registered. Maybe someone else can confirm if the reciprocal agreement doesn't apply for the 489 visa?
verystormy
You are covered by Medicare on a 489.
Rossmoyne
But I would certainly take out some travel insurance to cover you from UK to Oz... just in case anything happens along the way...

Thanks It will need to be more specialist insurance as normal travel insurance doesn't cover you unless you are resident in the UK and have purchased a return ticket. If you require treatment on route it could be very expensive and under any reciprocal agreement you foot the bill for your repatriation costs so it's definitely worth buying insurance to cover you until you get to Oz and register with Medicare.
