funkft
Hi, just wondering if anybody has done any travelling in and around WA. I know the area is enormous but I'd be keen to see as much of the state as possible, preferably by road. Some of the sights way up north look amazing, I'll probably have more than enough local(ish) travelling to do at first but would love to see and experience as much as possible. I thought it may be an interesting thread to share a few travel tales or tips when exploring this great state
odies
Love Busselton and the surrounding Beaches, Margaret river area nice to, a must is the tree tops walk. I think a plane ride to Broome should be on your list. it always seems along way to drive to see The pinnacles and the Wave but I am sure someone will say do it. beandownunder
This is similar to what I was talking to my OH about last night. Wondering if we should do all the "local" sightseeing or venture further north/south and see a bit more? we've only got twelve nights on our reccie........ REALLY looking forward to a trip to Margaret River, I love that sort of place. Its just that a mega road trip up to Broome sounds so appealing - I appreciate that this will be a proper trek, but a few nights under the stars with my family would be priceless I reckon I think Children learn so much from travel and the little adventures you end up in
millar.wall.1985
I know this threat primarily relates to Perth but once were settled in oz and we manage to holiday on the east coast were going to the whitsunday islands, my best friend travelled round on a yacht. fifi69
We've done a couple of road trips in the 20months we've been here. The first was up North to Monkey Mia. Shark bay is amazing and there is some lovely little places to stay en route is you want to break your journey up. Last month we did a road trip down south to Cape Le Grand. Not much going on until you get right down. Denmark and Albany are quite nice. A couple of photos of what's out there, the last one is the sat nav just outside of Kalgoorlie, on our last bit of the journey back to Perth. Over 500 kms before you even need to make a turn, lucky if you pass another car, nothing to see. Maybe not for everyone.
verystormy
Because of the distances I would leave a road trip until you are here permanent. The trip itself can be pretty dull. There isn't a lot to see on the trip north. Hence why most fly Broome and places. Once from Broome, traveling is a lot more interesting. But then it needs a lot of prep and planning as it would mean some very remote ground.

Plenty people road trip it up north, flying would mean missing out on some lovely places. Dongara and Kalbarri are lovely places to break the journey. It would also mean you wouldn't get to see Shark Bay, which is a world listed heritage site. Coral Bay and Exmouth too would get missed. Nikkis2000
Ooh this thread is getting me all excited again. After the last few weeks of furniture deliveries, house buying nightmares and OH working 15 hr days we've lost sight a little bit of why we're here. Thanks for the reminder funkft!! I thought it may be an interesting thread to share a few travel tales or tips when exploring this great state I would personally suggest that you spent the time in the metro area and surrounds as you are here for such a short time. The longer trips could come when you are settled here and can spend more time getting to know the country than have a whizzbang long drive from A to B just so you could say you had done it. A long drive with a dose of jetlag after that flight from UK to Oz is also something you seriously need to avoid! Heaps to see and do in Perth and the south west and there have been other threads recently with suggestions on places to visit, so I suggest you have a search of those. Probably worded it wrong - it is meant to be in the context of only having a short time to spend on the trip. Though will say i am not a fan of Kalbarri and Shark Bay has the stromatalites, for which is has its heritage listing, but Mandurah (Lake Clifton) actually has a very close relative

Thanks - we aren't doing a reccie as such. We are just going to make the move in one go, so I should have plenty of time to take in some of the places suggested. I imagine we will have more than enough to do for many months once we arrive, but a nice drive up north taking in all the sights on the way up is definitely on the to do list. There are some, maybe not so obvious to the newbie, things to take into account though isn't there? I hear things like an electronic beacon are a must, should you get stranded somewhere

Thank you for posting your pictures, also, the places you have suggested here are on our list. It probably makes sense to miss out a few on the way up and then at least there is something new to do on the way back down - would you agree? Debpete
We live and operate a bed and breakfast in Margaret River very popular with local British community and their families. Regular guests told us about this forum so if we can help with advise please let me know. We know the region well and can assist with travellers to the region .
