lozzachino
Was looking at taking my dad to rottnest when they visit at the end of the year. At $85 each for the ferry from hillarys, plus $20 each for the bus to get round the island, its just an insane amount of money. can anyone shed light on why its so expensive? Or is it just a wa thing!! Ripping people off!
jamesw
Its cheaper if you go from Fremantle

lozzachino
Still got to get to freo and then pay for parking all day imagine? I live right by the hillarys marina so was looking at prices from there as we can go earlier and get back later without the travel time. are cheap tuesdays only from freo? Don't imagine it will apply during the Christmas hols when we are hoping to go! and seriously $20 for the bus!!! Each!! I was going to give cycling a go but its and additional cost to take your bike or hire one, and i am not the best cyclist, but my parents are a little past their cycling days so not an option really. portlaunay
It's beautiful. I think the apartments are appalling for the price you pay, reminds me of Butlins in the 70's. Is he active? You could cycle around. You probably wouldn't see the whole island in a day but it's lovely to cruise around on two wheels. You could find someone who gets corporate deals. We bought some tickets from friends who got them through work and it was really affordable for the four of us.
lozzachino
I do really want to go porty, but the cost is going to be prohibitive for four adults and a child. My dad is coming from South Africa where its R10 to $1 so telling him a day out is going to cost over R1000 per person is just crazy and I certainly cant afford to pay for us all at that cost. They are both active but probably not been on a bike for 50 years, have told me point blank no chance of them getting on bikes. i see the entertainment book offers 25% off the boat trip but not the island admission fee, which would save a bit, but looking at the best part of $100 for the five of us to travel round by bus. Is it worth going if we dont cycle or get the bus and just hang out where we can walk to? Or is that just a complete waste? Bearing in mind we will have a four year old with us who doesnt walk very far before saying he is tired!

lozzachino
Haha Debs, when we realised we were looking at over $500 for a day out, my hubby said, cant we just swim there!
portlaunay
You really don't have to walk far (or ride or take the bus). A short walk up to the lighthouse and around Thomson bay is lovely but if the cost is prohibitive then there are other places to go along the coastline that have a lot to offer, it just depends on what you're looking for. TBH it sounds like you wouldn't get the most out of a visit to Rottnest so what sort of thing are you looking at doing and maybe there are better options? lozzachino
Well its my dads first trip here and with the poor exchange rate he will get we are hoping to keep costs down. Looked at a short trip down south but as its xmas hols they want min 7 nights and crazy prices. So may as well stay home and make the most of perth. All the usual touristy bits i think, city, kings park, swan valley, whiteman park, maybe caversham, yanchep national park. Perhaps a day trip down to mandurah. Was wondering about a drive up north to the pinnacles for the day, but wondering if its a bit much for our four year old to be in a car for so long. they are here for a month so we have time to fit a fair bit in with lots of relaxing in between hopefully too
beandownunder
really enjoying the feedback this thread is generating, as we're hoping to visit rottnest but there's six of us and not all can cycle, so I've been mulling it over too. thanks lozzachino xxxx J x

odies
Loz, When we first used to visit ,what you have planned is great, to much and it becomes forgetful. Also I am old and rushing around visiting places and car journeys do not mean as much as seeing how and where you are living day to day. My hubby loves watching the cricket at Iluka with the grandkids playing about, walking along the beach front stopping for a coffee,I enjoyed the trip from Perth to Freo on the ferry. But most of all loved just chilling with the family . Spoke to them about Busselton they paid £600 each family to stay in a house on the beach ,3 families 5 beds with very little in it. My son says way to expensive for what you get but the children enjoyed it. No home from home was his comment.
travelchic
If he's never been before then it's all new to him. Think about how many days out around Perth you could have for the same price as one day at rottnest. Debs

lozzachino
Thanks all. Will look at cheapy tuesday then and see what the story is. So nice to have everyones feedback, especially odies. My dad keeps saying he just wants to spend time where we live, so perhaps best not to try cram too much in. Would rather go out for a few brekkies and lunches than pay $500 for one day out
lozzachino
http://www.rottnestexpress.com.au/Deals/telethon-tuesday/ Just found this looks like the cheap tuesdays was not valid from 17 dec to 14 jan. Current cheap tuesday offer is only to end of sept. My dad is here from 12 dec to 8 jan, so more than likely wont be able to the the cheap tuesday option. So much cheaper at $39 per adult and $22.50 per child!! If parking is only $5 too, fab. But such a pity the hillarys one does not do any offers. Lozza, when we have had the olds come to visit, they haven't been very mobile either, didn't swim, didn't like the heat, but seemed just happy seeing their grand kids, that to them was what it was all about. They did enjoy Rottnest but we just took the ferry there and had lunch, didn't do much else. They did enjoy the captain cook cruises along the river, you can get a lunch one to freo or a lunch one to the wineries, they can work out expensive but if you know someone with an entertainment book you can get some good vouchers on there and they can see the river, city etc have a lovely meal and not have to move a muscle. Might be just as nice a treat. I do understand about the cost of Busselton, we too paid for the time at aqua resort for all of us worked out about $2,000 for six of us for four days, it's a lot when you are the only ones paying. Helps if the parents appreciate it too..... Hope you get sorted without too much expense. peax
waynel
For the captain cooks cruises, sign any littl'uns up fpr captain cooks kids club - they get a free cruise and 4 adults can go at kids prices. Will take a couple of weeks to come through the post so do it well in advance - just sign up on their website. Give me a break!
Also hire a boat, not sure NOR but in Mandurah we can hire a boat for 4 for $50 or for 6 for $90 for an hour and take it around the canals estuary. In Laws loved it and we saw Dolphins so close we could touch them, and you don't need a skippers ticket. Finished off with Fish & Chips at Nino's, they loved it. There is plenty to see and do within walking distance, I took my 76 YO mum, she hated it, too hot, too much walking, not enough shade, & that was with the day buss pass, we only lasted half a day and spent most of that in Dome in the aircon. In hindsight it wasn't worth the money, we won't be going again, not unless we have our own boat anyway There is plenty to see and do on the mainland, spend the money on a captain cook cruise up the swan valley.
