Guest neilco
As the title says... Just wanted to say hi after lurking some time. Hoping to get my 457 visa granted this month after providing the last documentation, then will look to move down in early-May. Wife and our three year old daughter will then move down early-June. Gives me a month to buy a car, find and rent a house and buy the furniture I need whilst I wait for the rest to ship from Denmark. Plus all paperwork... Gotta say say I am feeling woefully underprepared after reading all the posts from people who are way better at planning than me. I was just planning on turning up, getting stuck into my new job and easily renting a house with a pool in a fantastic area near the beach and quite cheap. Oh yeah, and a great car for hardly any money as well. Where's the best place for me to start re-adjusting my expectations? Cheers Neil
fifi69
Hi Neilco Welcome aboard and congrats on your visa. I wouldn't start stressing too much....it's not good for you. Lol. Less than 2 years ago, we were in your situation. From OH being offered a job to the 457 being granted was about 2 weeks. I really Didnt know which way to turn!! Not much time for research, but we managed to secure a rental with pool, 10 mins from the beach for a very reasonable rate before we left the UK so that was one less thing to worry about. We Didnt look much into different areas, just stuck to the area where OH would be working. Then it was a case of OH leaving 6 weeks before the rest of us. So he did the setting up here, while I dealt with the shipping, house, dogs etc back in the UK. Even working full time he managed to get all the basics together for us arriving, although some sort of vehicle is def needed for all trips etc, so if there is no chance of you borrowing one, then yes you will need to buy one pretty much straightaway. People we know who have only just arrived got a cheap car to keep them going, but when they need to go and get large items that they have bought of gumtree just hire a ute from Bunnings and use that to collect. For general everyday household stuff, plates, crockery, iron, kettle, bedding etc that you will need to keep you going until your container arrives can all be bought under one roof at a number of shops with locations in virtually every suburb of Perth. Securing a rental at the moment isn't such the madness it was a couple of years back, I would just make sure you have your rental pack all together and ready to hand in as soon as you see something you like. You will be fine, it all comes together soon enough. All the best x
verystormy
Ikea do a really good home starter kit that has all the kitchen essentials in. As to your expectations it will depend on budget. Also where your work is and how far you are happy to commute. Second hand cars are fairly expensive as cars here hold their value well. It's a negative when you buy your first, but then a positive when you want to sell it.
Guest neilco
Hi, thanks for replies. Work will be St Georges Terrace in the CDB and am looking at somewhere reachable on the northern (Joondalup?) train line, preferably City Beach to Scarborough area or a little inland, closer towards the train line. Also considering driving or cycling... is that ralistic? Budget for housing is OK from what I've seen and am glad to hear that the rental market has calmed down. Have seen good places online but am a little reluctant to sign up without sight! Have a months accommodation when I get down there so not a great rush. Car cost is OK as will be sellling my car in Denmark, where car prices are crazy high, and using that money to fund the purchase in Perth. Same negative-positive scenario as you describe. Hi Neilco, driving is realistic but only if you have a parking spot in the city, otherwise it will cost you quite a lot to park all day. Many commute by train to avoid parking costs, some are lucky enough to have a parking space provided with their job, maybe worth asking if you get one with your job. Prices of cars vary, we find them fairly competitive to the Uk prices, and second hand cars seem to hold their value quite well. Best of luck with the visa, we came on a 457 visa and have been here 6 years in April, ours is one of the more successful 457 visa stories. scotland smiley
Hi, OH has a 457 visa, and is already out working- I will follow as soon as house etc sorted, but I am getting a sense it is difficult for partners on a 457 to get jobs? Is this correct or is it just a case of if you're lucky you'll find one. many thanks.

Hi SS, there have been folk who have posted on here that it been difficult for them to get a job when their partner and they are on a 457 visa, not sure why that is. I would recommend you get a TFN as soon as you get here, then you will be in a good position to start work if that is what you need or want to do. Maybe casual work will be what you may get, not necessarily permy work. But not sure, I haven't worked here so have no experience of not getting or getting jobs on a 457. It would be different now as we are citizens, something which I make sure is on my CV. Best of luck pea
verystormy
There can be issues for those on a 457 to get work as they are only here temp. That and employers know that there destiny isnt in their own hands - if the main holder loses their job, then the secondary has to potentialy lose theirs. But it will probably just take a bit more effort

As we are relocating this year and could really do with securing a rental property beforehand thanks Hayley. Hi Haley, I have a friend who got a short term rental on this website http://www.perthfurnishedrentals.com/index.html , my hubby went on his own last week and got a room on this site ww.airbnb.com.au until we arrive in august. Hope it helps!

Pea Hi Pea, can I just ask, what visa did you get after the 457? Were you able to apply in two years? We are going on a 457 and from what I heard we could apply for a permanent visa after 2 years with the same employer? Thanks!
verystormy
MrsL you can apply for PR anytime. The two year rule simply removes the requirement for a skills assessment. My advice is to always apply ASAP.
