My wife and I have said we will just be happy to wear a general pair of shorts and t-shirt / vests for throughout the days. I don't mind wearing just a cheapo t-shirt that will get me through a summer. I have the Ted Bakers / Firetrap etc etc type t-shirts that I wear in England but I can easily do without them. One of the reasons we are sick of the UK is the fact you can be judged on clothes worn. My experience of NZ and Australia (especially NZ) is that people tend to be more casual in their appearance, the first time we went to NZ we took smart shirts etc for the nights out but the locals just wore any old t-shirts and a pair of jeans, we enjoyed that approach.

I have to admit I'm a bit of a chameleon when it comes to clothes! I'm more comfortable in flip flops, shorts and t-shirt or beach dress but then sometimes I also like to dress up. Where I live people dress up for the school run :swoon: and they do judge you on the brand of your handbag, car, and size of your house; it's one of the reasons we are moving to Perth. However, peer pressure is not why I like the odd designer item. I'll only buy it if it's a classic, fits me, I like it, it's comfortable and good quality because I tend to buy things that I know will stand the test of time. In the long run it saves me money. I usually buy things when they're on sale or I'm being offered a big enough discount. I bought several surf brand jumpers and t-shirts when we were in Oz 5 years ago and I'm still wearing them now.

Also, I am interested in the brands available in Oz and which are similar to brands us Brits are more familiar with. For example if I shopped at Surf Dome in the UK then I'd go to to a similar outlet like City Beach in Perth.

I still haven't seen the brand mentioned that I saw in the wardrobe of my SILs friends sisters house in Perth!?! :err: I may have to do a spot of googling tonight whilst the wrinklies are watching Independence Day LoL

I've lived for an extended period of time in the US, Aus, and the UK.

When I lived in Aus, I realised my wardrobe had a million pieces from a million places. For me, there was no 'favourite shop' Down Under.

There are very few stores that have equivalents in the UK. It's about exploring and discovering :-)

Try:

Cotton On (great for basics)

Cotton On Body (undies and loungewear)

Forever New (dressy)

Jeanswest

Just Jeans (which isn't just jeans)

David Jones (department store)

Meyer (also department store)

Bardot (love this one)

Target (great for work clothes)

Cue (very classy)

Witchery (again, classy and not cheap)

Sussan (aimed at older women, but I'm 25 and bag some classic bargains here)

Portmans (quite timeless)

Peter Alexander (hello pajamas!)

Hope this helps a little :-)

Now typing all this made me homesick for Perth haha. While I'm still in the UK I will definitely be stocking up on GAP stuff! :-)

I can't actually believe some people factor in clothes on their monthly spend as seen on some costs of living threads. I mean surely you have your existing wardrobe/drawers of clothes and then you just add to that as and when you need a t-shirt/dress/blouse or whatever.

Hmmm hope oz have those red high heels I like ......only joking

Keefo, there is a big difference between 'need' and 'want' haha.

You can find red high heels at the retailer 'Betts' ;-)

Well I say Elizabeth, I'm not moving to OZ if they haven't got the equivalent Next or House Of Fraser etc ha ha

Thanks for the heads up on the heels.... !!!

lots of places sell bikinis and swimwear, most department stores carry all the big names, seafolly etc. there are numerous sports shops everywhere and they have sales all the time selling last seasons swimmers.Plus the big w , targets etc sell loads to. Not like over here in the uk.
