English Rose
Hi all, hope you are all well. How far 'roughly' is Duncraig or Quinns Rock from the city? As been looking at rentals on realestate and they seem quite nice. Not sure what the area is like though. thankyou. Jo xx
verystormy
Duncgaig is very central. But expensive as a result. Quoinns Rocks is far north of Perth and a fair way from the city - can be expensive because it is popular with brits (IMO for no other reason than there are lots of other Brits there). odies
quinns is around an hour drive from cbd, very close to beaches, do not look at anything classed as old quinns
nikkiwd
whats wrong with old quinns Odies, out of interest? been looking at rentals on realestate there too, as well as other places. Not interested in the fact there are lots of brits there, just trying to find a nice suburb with affordable 4x2's with a bit of a garden. Love the look of the new built houses but they are on such small blocks with postage stamp sized gardens! trying to find something that ticks all the boxes isn't easy. I quite like old quinns although the old does imply exactly that, the older part of the suburb. If you are after new then it won't suit you but if you don't mind rustic then there are some lovely quirky old places in old quinns. I'd take a look around when you arrive and get a feel for places. On screen some of these houses look lovely but in reality you are stuck in the middle of newbuild, legoland hell and can hear your neighbours go for a wee! Druid
Hi all, hope you are all well. How far 'roughly' is Duncraig or Quinns Rock from the city? As been looking at rentals on realestate and they seem quite nice. Not sure what the area is like though. thankyou. Jo xx Quins is quite a trek and there is no freeway for the first bit, freeway stops in Currambine at Burns beach road, nearest train station is Clarkson about 5 or 10 minutes from Quinns, then it's a 35 min ride on the train, good thing is Clarkson is the start of the train line so you get a seat, Duncraig on the other hand is 5 mins to the station and a 20 min ride on on the train, standing room only by now in both cases the morning commute is painful into the city, at 6:20AM the freeway is backed up to hodges or Ocean Reef, then it's a slow drive all the way to the city, we looked at renting in Duncraig, older properties for lots of money, If you are commuting to the city Duncraig would be a better option
odies
old quinns was were those with little money went when Perth was first growing, away from it all on the beach etc etc. they are the ones laughing now as their plots of land are worth a fortune now , facing the indian ocean or up on the hill with fab views only a lot of them are no more than shacks. Where the land has been bought and the shacks knocked down there are some fabulous properties . It is just those been in perth a very long time still have the wrong impression of old quinns, it is work in progress. I do not find it a trek just a nice journey to the freeway to get yourself ready for the queues that can await you if you hit the freeway at the wrong time, no different than in the uk. The train station is easy to get to in Clarkson and the free car park can get full but you do get a seat on the train .
Arwen
Personally I would choose Duncraig even though it is older. I wouldn't live north of Burns Beach Road. Not because any area further north is bad but because it always feels like a trek if I have to go up there. My advice is to keep an open mind and have a drive round when you arrive. As I said what looks good on screen can be hell in real life.
Scot01
I have a friend who has worked in schools all over Perth and is now at Duncraig High and says it's a great school.
cockneybynature
You should be aware that lots of new poms move to the Quinns Rocks area and surrounding suburbs as the major home builders have targeted this area with their home / land packages for migrants. The result is that this area is a pom haven with the road from quinns going further north and further away from Perth (where a lot of work is). If you have a job in these northern areas then thats good, but if you have a job in Perth then it can be quite a trek. I personally would opt for Duncraig although renting or buying real estate will cost a bit more (being closer to Perth). At the moment your real estate dollar will be worth more in Duncraig than in the far northern suburbs (thats the way it is here). Eventually in years to come Quinns Rock will probably be considered close to Perth, but not right now. PS. I am a pom who used to live in Quinns Rock many years ago, so I have seen the full cycle of development in Perth. Hope this helps.
realitynotincluded
If you want close ... then definitely Duncraig, 15 mins from CBD. Good schools, train station , highway, beach all very close. Pricey because of Duncraig high school being part of Gifted and talented programs from the government and school. Quinns Rock makes you feel like you have left the city without living in the middle of no where... but a trek to the city. on a good day l would say at least 3/4 hr to get to CBD and that is if there are no crashes on the highway. lozzachino
If you can afford duncraig then its a no contest. Quinns is far and personally i do not like it. Like others say you need to see places for yourself, as one mans heaven is anothers hell!
nikkiwd
after arriving a couple of weeks ago we have had the chance to have a good look around and I liked some areas of old quinns, some streets were a bit scruffy though. As hubby may have a job in the city we are starting to look closer in as it is too far a commute up to there.
EmsyEss
Hi Nikkiwd! How are you finding Perth and the search for a rental? Have you decided on a suburb yet? We are considering Duncraig as one of our options and we arrive into Perth in October with our two daughters in tow (2 and 1 year old) It's hard to decide until we actually arrive but I'm putting a shortlist together and we'll have a good look around once we get there. Hope you are settling in well :-)
nikkiwd
hi, yes getting there! we have had a look around at a few suburbs and rentals and my favourite places are Edgewater and Kingsley, in fact we have applied for a house in kingsley but will see if we get it as someone else has applied for it too. Edgewater had a house we really liked too but Kingsley wins when it comes to schools. good luck with the planning and the big move.
EmsyEss
Ah that's so funny as we have a one month rental in Kingsley already booked! :-) I've heard a lot about the area and hoping it would be nice to live close to the CBD and not far from the beach. I've heard Hillarys is lovely too. Hope you get the house! :-)
