Welcome to Perth, hope it you are having fun, Hows the Jet Lag?

Greig, it's fab! No jet lag as we stayed 6 nights in Singapore. It was really strange arriving at Perth airport this afternoon feeling human and not spaced out and half comatosed!

There at last Lou, enjoy the settling in period ahead. It must be so nice to have family meet you at the airport and to stay with.

We have said more goodbyes today, thinking we are leaving everyone we know to go to where we know practically nobody...we must be mad! (but at least we aren't the only mad ones as a few Perth Pommers seem to be doing the same)

Our list for today...unpack (if we can find hangers at my SILs...lol family joke), have more cuddles with my 3 week old niece :cute: , sort Medicare and driving licences, register for a TFN online and take the kids to their swimming trial for the local swimming club.

BIL also wants to show us the plot they've just purchased in Baldivis Quarter and reckons we should consider buying something similar and building as "it only takes 22 weeks and we can stay here whilst it's being built"!!! That option had never crossed my mind  but is certainly another one we'll now consider.

It's a cloudy start to the day but I must say when we arrived yesterday it was a very pleasant 22 degrees and sunny.

Oh and the suitcase we posted around 10 April arrived last week so it only took 3-4 weeks and not the estimated 6 weeks to get here :jiggy:

Sounds like you're settling in well!

Just a point on the driving licence, you may find it difficult to get straight away as you need loads of different ID, some of which can take a while to get hold of when you first arrive. I have (hopefully) attached a pdf that shows what you need. One piece of advise we were given was to apply for a Proof of Age card. It doesn't take as long as your Medicare card to come through and can be used instead.

Just a quick one Lou. Building takes a bit longer than 22 weeks. From slab down - no foundations here, just a concrete slab poured and built on - it is maybe 22 weeks, but from the moment you have selected a builder / design and found your block, it is about 6 months to slab down. We put the offer on our block and selected the builder early november and are hoping for slab being poured next week. The rest of the time is things like getting council approvals, pre-start on the house (imagine everything that a house has from taps to paints to tiles and even where electrical points go all has to be decided).

You also need 3 months of Australian payslips to get a mortgage.

We have friends building in Baldivis Quarter over the back from us in Highbury park. As it is restricted to the 4 building companies owned by Dale Alcock they are struggling with demand so would say 22 weeks is very optimistic, I've heard of 4 month waits just for the slab.

Our build took 12 months almost to the day from signing for the land to moving in including a 2 month wait for titles and the Christmas shut down.

I would also wait for 6months employment history to open up a wider range of lenders

Thanks Chardy and VS! I thought 22 weeks was pretty quick! I will quiz my BIL some more as to how quickly their block will be built on. There's no issue with the financing of such a build; at the prices being quoted we would be mortgage free which is part of the attraction. However, it's early days yet; first I have a long list of things we need to sort out in the next few weeks :jiggy:

We went to Medicare today. We timed it just right and arrived at the centre about 10 o'clock and only had to wait 5 minutes to see someone and 20 minutes to sort out.

The kids had their swimming trials and start lessons/ club swimming this Saturday. It was lovely as all the staff at the pool remembered my hubby from last October when he trained with them for 2 weeks :jiggy:. We also got chatting to a lady on poolside who had a few things in common with us....it was funny because as she walked past us I said to the OH that I was sure I recognised her from Jersey but then maybe not as I have an excellent memory for faces and I could have just seen her somewhere when we visited in October. Then she noticed the kids Jersey Tigers swimming hats and asked where we were from...and guess what...she HAD lived in Jersey for 20 years and moved to WA 7 years ago!!! She said we would love it here! I really hope so! Our boys will be swimming together so I'm sure I'll get to know her well...us swimming Mums usually do as we spend so many hours on pool side!

I've also had the PDF on the driving licence requirements from Nikki...I can't believe the amount/ combinations of documents they need ...they may as well ask for the brand of my underwear too!!! So thank you Nikki for that helpful info!

Tonight I'm sorting out my Medicare login/ app and TFN. We've nearly finished unpacking but it took a bit of jigging around space at SILs to find a home for the contents of our bags.

Tomorrow and Friday we'll be focusing on schools as I want the kids back at school ASAP. My eldest has also got a rugby trial tomorrow evening. If we can get the kids sorted then well have more time to sort ourselves out and they'll start making friends and feeling more settled (well that's what we figure anyway!)

Hi Lou, we are moving to baldivis on 30th July and soon becoming reality as I only have 5 more weeks left at work and our shipping goes on 9th June, been loving reading your threads and seeing how first impressions have been for you and your family.

We are very surprised at all the documents for driving licence needed and hope we could have that info from you if you get a chance to send it.

we are very excited now and kids counting the sleeps.

Hi Lou,

You are more than welcome to have look round our 6 week old new build and have a cuppa. It'll give you a real feel for new houses rather than the display home versions ! ;-)

Thanks Chardy, we may take you up on your offer

We're staying with my SIL in Harrington Waters. They built here a couple of years ago. TBH the quality of the fittings in their house aren't great but I'm not sure if that's because that's what they chose/ could afford at the time.

Today we made some appointments with schools and the OH set up some meetings in the city. He also trained with the local Masters swimming club as he's competing in the State Championships next weekend! Hoping he'll be State Champion in his age group

On a much more serious note...a little update and dilemma!! My eldest had an interview this morning at Frederick Irwin and has been offered a place immediately...dilemma!!! I would love to say yes but they don't have a place for my other 2 which could mean they end up at school in Baldivis, or wherever we end up renting/ buying, which won't be convenient for getting my eldest to school. Alternatively we can take a place for him immediately at Tranby in Baldivis and a place for him from year 7 at Frederick Irwin (from 2016) when the other 2 are also likely to also have places at the school. Tranby have told me they can't accommodate my other 2 children until Jan 2015!

What to do??? Arghh!!!
