where to live ??

We had no idea.

We landed and Freo was close to Mrs p's work and she'd secured a holiday let here. We fell in love with the place but an opportunity to move into something that appeared very special came up in Willetton. We hated it, we lasted four weeks before we raced back to Freo. Suburbia just doesn't work for us. Yes Freo is expensive but we're happy to forego the fancy car, pool, a/c etc in order to live somewhere with a great community and some creativity and vibrancy. It's not for everyone and seemingly we just have a different set of priorities to a lot of poms looking for a new life in Perth.

Agree with your Porty, we have just brought our first house here and we had to choose between moving further out so we could have the bigger house, the bigger outside area and a pool, but we love Scarborough, love the buzz of the place as we sit and have a coffee and people watch, but its central to everything, we love that we can walk to the beach, don't get me wrong we only walk along Scarborough beach, if we are having a beach day where the kids go in the sea, we go further afield to more child friendly beaches, as Scarborough is a bit rough to swim in, but it just feels right for us as a family. I would love to live in the hills, have all that space and freedom, but my fear of nature takes over, I have only just started walking along the road at night here due to "what could be hiding to pounce", if we lived in the hills, after dark I would never be able to leave and after seeing Peanut's friend on her washing line, not sure I could sit and relax during the day, but I love the fact that the hills are only half an hour away to get to, so I really do feel I have the best of both worlds. Thats why Perth is great as there is so many options you can choose from.

Our ethos was the best house we could afford in the suburb we liked, rather than the biggest house we could afford in area we weren't too keen on.

Same as you Ali. Our first rental was horrible - 1950's kitchen, bright orange tiles, mice and cockroaches that came through the gap between floorboards and skirting but it had a big garden and was in the Western suburbs - great State schools, only rent we could afford at the time. Ate baked beans for a while in order to afford the mortgage for a house in the same suburb.

 A 1950's kitchen with bright orange tiles sounds awesome.

it is interesting, I like hardship, it makes me appreciate the times of plenty that bit more.

Ditto Louise!... Rockingham is convinient but the snob in me wants to move somewhere else!!.... Also, Lees daily commute to the airport takes best part of an hour... Would love to halve that?!!... I would love to be near Fremantle but don't think our bank account will allow that just yet?!!! :-D

I used to commute from Rockingham to the main Airport, the Kwinana & Roe in the morning & evening rush hour are a nightmare, I discovered that if you take Thomas Road cross country to the Tonkin highway or even Nicholson & then Randford to the Tonkin highway then to avoid the road works at the airport on Tonkin, get off at Abernethy go past the grain terminal to Grogan road the commute was a lot quicker and less stress in the traffic, now I live in. Burns beach & commute to Jandakot airport, what a nightmare in rush hour. :arghh:

Yeh...it's a bit like where I left in the UK when I moved to Jersey. Having lived in Jersey for 20 years it's a bit of a shock!

I'm keeping my eyes open Amy! But if not perhaps we should meet up. Both sets of twins are the same age so could meet at the park or beach if it's not too chilly hehe  xxx

I think it varies a lot if people have children or not. We don't and the area we live isn't popular with families - no school and not much for kids other than the beach. But that suits us as we like quiet - which this certainly is as most houses are weekenders and now till mid spring the place is very quiet.

I guess he's going to have to find out for himself if it's a problem.

That house has been knocked down now, garden cleared and a big monstrosity in its place. I always feel sad when I pass it!

And sad for the cockroaches

think i need to do more research lol :-/

Not really. Born in Perth, grew up in Perth, now living in Perth.

Know 2 couples living in "Bally-D", and it's the sticks. ;-) Know a few people in Shocko etc. too.

Look at the Transperth map, Zone 1 is "the city", Zone 2 is "close to the city", Zone 3 is "Where? Oh, I think I know there", Zone 4 is "nope, sorry, where? Oh, that's miles away".

There are a few exceptions, the big well knows towns (Shocko, Mandurah, Joondalup, Armadale etc.).

Because I lived in the UK for 20 years, I signed up to ask a few questions about coming back.

I've stayed to give an alternate view of Australia, as I seem to have a different view to most.

Another thing to consider is fast forwarding a few years. You may have a child who is starting to go to parties, go shopping, hanging out at the beach etc. Do you want to be spending all your life in the car ferrying kids around. Think about public transport etc. Just a bit of something else to think about.

Such a good point Arwen. First it was driving to the sports games and practice then my son got into drama which was endless rehearsals for shows all over Perth. Next comes parties and generally hanging out with friends where there was no public transport - or very poor. Even school - son had to leave at 7.30 to get there by school bus which wound its way round the suburbs but if I took him we could leave at 8.10am so that was a better option. Any after school activities and there was no bus so I had to pick them up.

At last they have both got their license and I have a new lease of life - except when they plead for me to pick them up after a party so they can drink (and can't afford a taxi)!
