budeman
Hi, First time posting on here, glad I found this site, very informative! I am just applying for my visa now and am looking at places my family (wife and 3 year old with one more on the way) might like to live. We have been over to the Perth area a few times now and we really liked Fremantle (as does a lot of other people hence the price!) so we we wondered about the areas surrounding Freo such as Hamilton Hill and Beaconsfield. We did not visit these areas when we were there but looking at what you get for your money and location wise Hamilton Hill looks quite good. I had heard that there are ‘two sides’ to the area (not sure if this is true as it was just one persons opinion) so not sure what to expect. Also from looking at estate agents reviews it says it is and ‘up and coming’ area. Knowing estate agents this can range from meaning they would never set foot near the place to actually being a good bargain so I am weary. Anybody on here have an opinion of the area? any advice greatly appreciated! Thanks, Mark.
portlaunay
Hi and welcome to PP. Where you live now and what you're used to is likely to have a bearing on the answer to that question. We're from SE London and live close to what is called the 'Beacy Bronx' as it's a hotspot for crime. However, in comparison to life in SE19 it's like moving to the Isle of Man. Beaconsfield, O'Connor, Hilton, Hammy Hill, White Gum Valley are all fantastic places to live. There are some pockets I wouldn't be happy to live in simply because they're a bit scruffy and do have the odd half broken car on the drive but I'd be happy to walk my kids through any of those areas at any time of the day or night. Many thanks for the reply. I currently live in Leicester so not exactly SE19 but then not W10 either! From what I saw of the properties and their location to things like the Perth centre, Fremantle and beaches Hamilton Hill and the surrounding suburbs do seem like very good value for money. I have looked on realestate.com.au & gumtree but are there any other sites you would recommend to look at?

I'm certain our postcode in streatham was se19??? we lived on downton ave :-) sorry to hijack your thread Mark, welcome to PP! x
jamesw
You can't beat having an SE17 postcode! The Old Kent Road was a joy to live down!
fifi69
Like Porty says, these areas are good, but yes a lot of them do look a bit run down now. not to be negative I wouldn't be willing to walk thru some of these areas late at night. I say that as I used to work a late shift in Coogee and had to drive back through these areas on my way home. Did used to see a fair few unsavoury looking characters. If its just easy access to Freo you are looking for, you do have a fair bit of choice, without the price tag. The places Porty mentioned plus Coolbellup, Yangebup, again older established areas, so a bit of a mix. Bicton, really nice, a bit more upmarket. We lived for two years in Melville, great access for Freo, either 5 mins down the Canning or Leach h/ways. Also plenty of buses if you Didnt want to take the car. Added bonus too of if you worked/wanted to head into the city via train you have the choice of either the Freo line or the Mandurah one. good luck

verystormy
Hi Mark We were very posh and lived in that well known upper class area called Highfields lol. Actually miss bits of it, particularly having pubs and restaurants all around. But a walk on the beach is better Where are you?

Well we are certainly not from anywhere posh (is there anywhere posh in Leicester?!) Just on Glenfield road out towards Western Park. Can imagine what you mean about pubs though - but yes I'm sure the beach makes up for that! Would love to meet up for a drink when we finally get over there (hopefully about this time next year) Thanks, Mark.
