What's lurking in the pantry?

If you're like me, you have things at the back of the cupboard that you bought and either didn't end up using or totally forgot about. I've just found a can of passion fruit pulp with a 2010 date on it.

What's in your pantry?

I can't believe how quickly my pantry has built up again. We arrived in January without a single tin of beans to our name. Now I'm having to buy extra Tupperware to organise everything!

I did accidentally put a bag of frozen broad beans in there instead of the freezer at one point over the summer. They were buried under something else and it took me ages to figure out where the funky smell was coming from!!

my OH asked me if I wanted a gin and bitter lemon on Saturday, I thought "bitter lemon- didn't know we had that?" it was a weird shade of grey and has a sell by date of 2010 !!!!! definitely been lurking in the back of the juice cupboard for a while (it's gone down the drain now!)

They do a great lemon and lime bitters here in WA

When Mrs p's mum passed away we cleaned out the pantry and found things that were a good 20 years out of date.

There was a jar of damson preserve that her dad knew was more than twenty years old because that's when he cut the tree down. It tasted yum-o

We tend to keep stuff well beyond the date on the packet/jar. We had a jar of Mussaman curry paste that was 18 months out of date and it was awesome. I remember in the UK we found a huge bag of massive American marshmallows that were so old they'd gone hard. We took them camping and toasted them over the fire and they were great.

What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger :err:

We have 30+ bottles of wine / champagne / liquers on top of our kitchen cupboards which we will hopefully be drinking before OH departs on 25 September.... however some have been up there for months/years and a few are looking decidedly odd colours - the liquers in particular are a worry! OH reckons the smell test will do the trick... Just wish every time we have a braai (BBQ) our guests would adhere to our "bring a salad but not a bottle" rule or at least drink more on each visit!!!

A SA friend of mine used to tell stories of cooking on the beach in a big pot where they threw all manner of meats and liquids - beer, wine, coke, whatever they happened to have. They'd surf/play on the beach and after a few hours of slowly bubbling away they'd tuck into it. Sounded fantastic.

Maybe you could buy a bag of frozen fruits and reduce them down in various liqueurs and sugar. Sieve the liquid, add gelatine and cool to a jelly. At this stage it doesn't really matter what the liqueur was like, it will just be awesome.
