Mobile contract or PAYG?

Hi all

My hubby and I received PAYG sims as part of opening our bank account. We were considering taking out a contract once we're settled but I've heard horror stories from a friend who clocked up a $300 bill using data on their monthly contract. At the moment were paying $30 each a month and haven't run out of data or minutes.

Would you change?

Are there any contracts or mobile companies you would recommend? or would you stick to PAYG?

TIA

Lou

We have been on $30 PAYG for 3 years now & wouldn't even think about changing, every time I look in Vodafone or Telstra I cringe at the monthly fees, it's a rip off in Australia compared to the UK, here they load the price of the phone on the contract & it shows, the UK you get a free phone

I would definitely say stick to recharge, I always had recharge until my phone got an internal crack insurance didn't cover and I wasn't working at the time, so could not afford to pay $150 to get it fixed nor to get a new phone to replace. I decided to see if I could get a contract and surprisingly I was accepted and was told I was accept for a maximum of 2 contracts.

My contract runs out in May, but I will be moving back to recharge as although my texts are free. I have to be careful with my calls and data and never really had to be with recharge. I always use to call a friend in the UK on the mobile to use the credit up.

Hi,

Which company are best to go with for the $30 per month and how many minutes local/international do you get and the same with text messages, also do you get any data included.

Cheers

We're with Optus but only because we were given free sims by ANZ. I haven't run out of data each month I think because we use wifi at home and social media like Facebook is free. I can't remember offhand how many minutes and how much data we get but I know they do offers all the time if you top up each month with them.

I bought a mobile today (eventually got around to it) just a little samsung, nothing fancy but does all I need it to. $99 outright from the good guys with a Telstra sim as we were advised by the lady in the shop Telstra has the best coverage. Will just top up $30 per month but doubt I will use it as I'm not a phone person.

i went with Vodafone when I first arrived as they beat everybody hands down on data, texts etc, problem is the coverage was crap, I was doing a lot of traveling around WA and as soon as I left Perth it was game over, I switched over to Telstra which doesn't have the amount of data texts etc but it has the coverage I need, we also experimented with different amounts $10 was a waste of time on Telstra and Vodafone, $20 only lasted about 2 weeks, but $30 seems to be the magic number, we don't run out of anything at $30, I am on Telstra, OH is on Vodafone.

I have a Virgin PAYG sim. $19 that lasts for up to 3 months, no pressure to use it up by the end if the month. Balance carried over if anything left, as long as you top up within the 3 months. Really cheap calls, 11c per min to Oz or UK. Free calls to other virgin users. Not used any of the data yet as I use wifi at home. Had it over 2 months now and still have $5 left. Mainly use it to call my hubby who has the same, so free calls. I think the plan is called Freedom 19. Excellent deal for us.

Pretty good deals then on PAYG, surprisingly cheap.

If you don't want a landline what is the best way to have wifi internet in your home & who offer decent deals......I'm starting to write things down now on a word doc called hints & tips!!!

We'll hopefully be needing wifi in the next few weeks as we've been staying with my SIL. So I'll be looking forward to hearing others tips.

We signed up with Belong. They use Telstra network (as they all do). OH got a fab deal. Wifi and free phone calls to all landline numbers in Oz. Can't dial mobiles on it but that's ok as we use our mobiles for that. He found it by researching on the web.

as for TV, we were going to do the equivalent to Sky 'Foxtel' but found it to be quite limited and expensive. We have instead bought a digital box for our UK TV and watch free view. We also have got a VPN connection via the web and can watch BBC channels etc, on the TV using Apple TV. Cables aren't my thing. I just need it to work. Hence the limited description of the tech used.

Sully, I also leave all the techi stuff to my hubby...and he's pretty good at it too. We gave away the digi boxes we had back home....hubby didn't think they would work but I think we'll end up doing the same as you. I don't think we watch enough tv for Foxtel and the kids certainly don't need any encouragement!

Hi Lou. Yes, I leave it all to hubby, I think they have something in their DNA that makes them compatible to Tech stuff!

The freestanding digi boxes and the ones built into UK TVs do not work here. That's why you need a Oz digi box or an Oz TV. In the UK we sold some of our TVs as they were not compatible with the Oz audio receivers. Getting technical here but TV have different frequencies that they work on (pan2/3/4?) and you need a TV that works on the Oz one which I think is pan 2, but don't quote me on that. Without it you can't get sound. Ooh, I must have a bit of male DNA in me, either that or a bit too much testosterone!
