annjean
Hi I am Australian, married a Pom ( he loves Australia only goes back for holiday because i want to go ) I lived in the UK on and off over the years and i loved the country and the people the places i visited , the pubs, markets even the snow etc ,my longest stint there at one time was 3 years as i always ended up homesick for Australia, now Sydney does have a lot going for it, so much to do, nightlife if your into that, theres always something happening there , but i still decided it would be nice to give Perth a go as my brother was living here at the time ( he has since retired to Thailand) so we built a house near the beach as i love living near the coast, ,been here 5 years now, but i would also understand why people that have come to Australia do miss family and friends and the country that they were born in, Australia is different from the Uk and you either love it or not everyone has their own opinion of course, Australia is a vast country with so much to see and do and I would never run out of places to go and venture out, i would not knock England just because I missed Australia or family here, having said all that there are places in Australia and the UK i would not want to live in but we do have a choice where we choose to live and in the end it is each persons decision.Perth is getting expensive and as we have our house on the market comparing prices to somewhere like Qld you seem to get more value for money property wise, so I am getting itchy feet now and want to move there for a change of scenery, well it will be near a beach but more tropical, different coastline. I dont see beaches as being all the same.
Guest Helenwhicker
Hi Darren, i somewhat agree with you, we're from Bexleyheath, been here nearly 2 years. We've had a really tough time. Partner doing nights for 15 months and working opposite each other. But even aside from the tough time, like yourself not sure of the substance here in perth. It is expensive and for me, I don't feel like the employment opportipunities here are that great. My partners favourite things are football & music, which is limited in Perth. Absolutely beautiful place, made some great friends, but not been happy for 2 yr now, was happy at home, freedom of work etc. it's not even the missing family issue, it's missing the freedom of my life in UK. We came for a better quality of life and so far it's been worse. Guess we'll see what the next 6 months brings.
Give me a break!
We've been here 4 years and to be honest I don't think we've scratched the surface. So many places we've yet to visit. WA isn't just about Perth there are many other areas to explore. I absolutely understand its not for everyone, we don't all like the same areas of the UK do we? We've been busy setting up our new lives, building our house and settling in to do much exploring even in 4 years so I genuinely don't understand how you can visit everywhere so quickly.I've seen more of Brisbane to be honest as I fly there twice a year to see my daughters. I personally can't wait to explore but our Mantra has been, we live here now so no rush. My OH works Fifo now so we have an amazing time in the 9 days he's home out for dinner every night, we haven't even done all the places very locally. Its not all about doing stuff when you live somewhere I don't reckon, its about actually living too.Having said all that though if its not for you then move on life us far too short to live somewhere that doesn't make you happy . Rather than jumping on you because I don't agree I would say your post just confirms that I am lucky tofeel so contented , but maybe that's because I'm " A dumb blonde"

Finland
Boring can also be good. Having just landed can't comment on the blonde (is she a real or a fake blonde?) - but Europe is uncomfortably close to many hotbeds at the moment and economy there is not going stellar either. I'm happy I don't have to fly international at the moment, and I'm superhappy to be residing outside the EU. If Australia is a prostitute (as someone in this thread alluded), EU must be the mother of all bordellos. Just my two cents Good luck and safe travels ya all! glenvin
Can you give me a single post where someone has been criticized for giving a bad view of Perth? I have seen it attempted, but are normally deleted by us pretty quick. Why are you taking it as a personal insult, it is my general view and one I am standing by. Many times I have seen someone on here try to criticize the aussie way of life and others shoot them down but that's fine as individuals we are all entitled to our own individual opinion. Also if you think I am going to trawl through previous posts to give you an example then please think again. Whilst we are on the subject of personal opinions I have also noticed the yourself and a few others are very helpful to newbies and those that agree with what you post but if others like myself don't agree then you are all very quick to shoot me and others down. Now I suppose I will have to wait for the onslaught regarding that remark
Lou8670
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion and WA doesn't suit everyone. I was just a little a shocked by the OP's post which was bound to incite a heated discussion. I don't profess to love WA so I can understand how the OP is feeling. I'm not looking at Perth through rose tinted glasses; far from it. I've only been here 3 months and time will tell as to whether we want to stay but one things for sure, it will be a life experience and if I prefer where I'm from I'll appreciate it even more when I return home. Trouble is I'm sure I'll miss things I've already started to take for granted in WA. I wish to the OP well and hope returning home is everything you are looking for. I mean that sincerely. Family and friends are very important. We only live once so we have to go with our gut and do what we feel is right for our own sanity. I'd like to think that I've been helpful to newbies (and not so newbies) irrespective of their views about Australia and Perth in particular - because someone may not like it as much as my family and I do, I certainly wouldn't withdraw any support I could give to them whichever way they were headed. I'm sorry that you've had a bad experience on the site and haven't felt that it's been inclusive.

Druid
Now for my 2p worth, I'm under no illusions, I came here for the sun, 300 sun days a year to be precise and quote the statistics I once read, yes I could have moved to Spain, but it's full of Spanish & I don't speak Spanish, also the job prospects were sh1t, I could have gone to France, but I detest arrogant Frenchman, this list and excuses are endless, I did go to Johannesburg, which ticked all the boxes and I stayed there happy & content for 10 years until they let a crim out of jail and he became president, then it all turned to rat poo, so here I am in Perth after 10 years in blighty, hated every minute of it, but did have a run of excellent jobs, enjoying my 300 sun days a year, job cr4p, job prospects are cr4p, commute is cr4p, it's crazy expensive, to the point where I have become ruthless with job hunting and finding that extra couple of $$$$ an hour to make our life easier, so I ask myself, is the 300 days of sun really that good, does it make up for a sh1t job and overpriced lifestyle which we can't afford, the jury is still out, I'm still deciding.................. But to the OP, you have made up your mind, so good luck to you, we still have a lot to see and do in Australia, if we can ever afford it. Lee Thorp
Hi all Wow how explosive,my family and I are flying out in September and before we go I know it will be very expensive and hot and no doubt I will struggle to find work as a carpenter, but I am willing to do this in the hope my 2 boys will have a better future in Perth than they would in the UK.The only way to find out is to try it otherwise for the rest of my life I would always be wondering how our life could have been. verystormy
Lee. First, some good news. There is a huge amount of house building going on at the moment and so any trades associated with it are getting lots of work. Now, my comment on your reasons for moving to Oz. It is generally regarded as a poor reason to move here for the old "give my kids a better life". Oz is just another first world country. It has all the same issues as the UK for kids. We have major problems with drugs We have issues with gangs and street crime We have issues with kids getting into trouble. We have teen pregnancies We have a major issue with youth unemployment - and getting worse We have the highest levels of kids not doing any excersice in th developed world We have, as a result, major obesity problems Oz is a great country, but if you think you will be escaping things you don't like about the UK, then you may be disappointed as they are likely to be here waiting for you. There is a far higher divide between the haves and have nots in WA big homeless population especially elderly living in cars and not just the indigenous people. Australia is presently not the land of milk and honey for some. May be 10 15 years ago when people emigrated when the £ was giving 3$ possibly giving a good start for folks but now I do not think so. Of course this is just from my perspective..................

7cdb
This is a depressing thread, on many levels. Only if you take it to heart too much. Everyone is different, everybody has different hopes and dreams....... The main problem with any forum is the intent to raise discussion is usually overly moderated or the dynamic of the forum is taken over by just a few "regular" posters. My mrs thinks im a bit weird looking on forums for info (but she plays candy crush, now that is weird) But,forums are a great way of gaining knowledge and helping people out if you know something about a topic. PP is in my view very balanced and helpful place to those looking at moving over to WA.

VS Some of those facts just can not be true. There is no way on earth that kids in OZ are any lazier than kids in the US for example. Unless you can provide factual data on this it is absolute rubbish imo. Just sayin......

Hi stormy Thanks for letting me know about the housebuilding, hopefully getting work might be easier than I thought. Is it wrong to dream or think about going somewhere to try and have a better life for your kids futures?I know Australia isn't the promised land and I'm sure it has as many problems as the UK,but what it does have is a beautiful ocean, fantastic beaches and from what I have researched a great outdoor lifestyle. Maybe it won't work for us and maybe we will return to the UK but I think everyone has the right to follow their dream even if for others it has not lived up to their expectation.
