hibster76
Not sure if it is now available, but my Uncle who moved to Perth in 1979 always said that he missed proper sausages, clotted cream and curly kale.

Tried pies from different place find pastry thick and hard.

Laz
I'm still in the UK and I would have to say I've always thought the sausages here were pretty bad (no fat in them) unless they're butcher sausages. So isn't it just the same in Perth? Go to a nice butcher and surely they'll have good sausages.
odies
have not missed much on the food front this time. I will miss though Chatwins sausage rolls and bread. I have found some nice bread in Basils in Mindarie but its $4 , and found Miss Mauds sausage rolls ok. I did find double gloucester cheese once but cannot find it this time. annjean
Basils is a great shop I love shopping there, good quality food even though you pay a bit more it's worth it. My husband likes the pork pies.

Most of the butchers here don't know how to make a decent sausage or only make beef / chicken.

Princi's in Beaconsfield and Frank's in Freo are awesome for sausages. Loads of different flavours including just plain pork.

Not tried the freo ones, but tried all the "famous" Perth italian butchers. Have to say their sausages are some of the worst things I have have ever eaten. And I have in my travels eaten some pretty awful things.

ETA: just read the comment about the Italian butchers... that's what I was thinking. Where I live in the UK there are no greengrocers and only a handful of butchers (without travelling out of town) so I'm looking forward to buying fruit and veg and meat/fish that's not wrapped in plastic (from the supermarket) ! verystormy
In all of the suburbs south of mandurah - it's a big area with a huge amount of suburbs, we only have one butcher. He is so "good" that when I went in and asked if he had calfs liver, he had never heard of it! There is a decent butchers in the northern half at meadow springs, about a 40 minute drive for me. Do some great meat. But still crap sausages. Greengrocers much thinner on the ground. Coles and Woolworths pretty much have it tied up. We have a couple of fish mongers. But not great, most of their stock is frozen. Bit of a crime in a beachside area famous for fishing!

I think your experience will be different depending where you live. I can only really speak for Freo and we're spoilt for choice with some great butchers, amazing Asian supermarkets, grocers stores, organic grocers stores, lots of little deli's and some great markets. From experience most people talk about what is seasonal far more than they did in the UK and we always try to buy WA grown produce. There's a huge seafood store in Freo but there's also a lovely Italian family who've converted their garage into a shop and have a varied selection of seafood including really fresh mussels and oysters. I especially like going there because all the fish is new to me and they're great at telling me what I should do with it. Freo has a huge Italian community and a lot of the shops reflect that. My local grocers advertises tomatoes by the pallet load and I've seen people order three pallets for the weekend when the whole family get together to make and bottle tomato sauce for the year. portlaunay
I've had to think hard about this as there's really nothing I miss, or thought I didn't until now. Tarragon. It just doesn't like the climate and what is grown here is tasteless. No biggie though when the Asian supermarkets are filled with such exotica to make every shop an adventure. verystormy
I think I would like living in freo. We were very spoiled were we lived in the UK. We lived in a mainly asian area that had loads of butchers (halal) and a myriad of other shops that sold loads of interesting things. But also had the biggest covered market in Europe which was great for veg - always 20-30 veg stalls, including Linekers - the parents of the footballer. Next to it was an indoor market that had loads of fish, cheese and game stalls. There would be everything from hares to pheasants hanging. Round the corner from where we lived were two butchers that were amazing. One specialized in VERY high quality meet - lots of free range rare breed and did loads of game such as venison from royal estates. Next door was the best greengrocers I have ever seen. Did a huge selection of wild mushrooms and things. The other butcher was the classic "old fashioned". The place hadn't seen a modernization in decades. It still has a till the rings a bell when the draw opens. But the coolest thing was they repeatedly won the best sausage in England awards. Cured there own bacon and things as well.
