what car do you drive?

@portlaunay Don't you think that this thread is an opportunity to assess each other's status and 'pulling power'. I feel inclined to declare I drive something totally bizarre just for the shock and awe / smoke and mirrors effect. For some, asking what car you drive is like asking a bloke how big his penis is? I haven't got one, but I would like to say 'Huge!'. Edited by Akasully2

At 43, with an ever increasing waistline and an inability to judge the size of my manhood without the aide of a mirror you may, perhaps, be right. The Cube isn't a particularly manly car, maybe I bought it to connect with my feminine side? I've never had any inclination to have a fast car but maybe the Porsche is to compensate; I should spend this evening contemplating my bisexuality?

I find amongst my Australian friends there is far less snobbery about cars than my UK (here and there) friends. We've had our car almost 6 years. That would be unheard of amongst my UK friends.

Completely agree with this, none of my Aussie friends have even mentioned cars and when I do their response is mostly one of indifference. Everyone in the UK seemed obsessed with what car you were driving.

agree but Aussis are obsessed with property.Starting a argument me thinks.

Not starting an argument at all, merely an observation amongst my circle of friends. An observation someone else has also had amongst their circle of friends. Some of my Australian friends have investment properties, I wouldn't call it an obsession but their way of providing a pension when they choose to retire.

I drive a Merc E class and 'er indoors has a new Jag XF. Both rented as its silly to buy such a depreciating asset in the UK where cheap lease deals are available to both business and personal users.

Owned Porsche,M cars loads of Bmw's Audi etc so I must have a small piece

Do I win!

sorry, no. To win you have to keep it to yourself that you have all these flash cars and admit only to yourself that you have a 'small one' but publicly, be modest and say you have a 'run around'.

To quote Jeremy Clarkson, "The sad thing about owning a flash car is that, by the time you can afford them, you will have a big gut and a bald head. If you have a convertible, the roof is always up to protect the bald head from sun burn and the big shadow of the gut. You should have a flash car when you are young, rich and proud to be in it".

I think Clarkson would of been describing me!

Cars were fun once, but now I'm old a nice lazy automatic Merc is perfect for me. The price of European metal in OZ is ridiculous, anything Japanese will do for me when we get over there.

....so no one has taken a VW over can offer any sort of reply about parts and repairs then!!....

Parts are unlikely to be a problem but insurance and resale values will likely be. Personally I think it's a false economy bringing a car. By the time you've paid to ship it, compliance, rego, insurance over the next xxx years and resale value at the end of it there's very little benefit. Sure, if you're looking at the price of cars from a UK perspective, converting from sterling, then they look expensive but once you're here, earning $AU you'll realise it's not that bad. In fact, the cars I've been looking at are around the same price in the UK.

Wouldn't bother.

If it was something rare and older or classic (pre 90's) or sporty (Ferrari, Porsche, Aston) I would, but anything that is a common modern car I wouldn't.

Maybe you could pick up a 964 Turbo for me and bring that?

There is a large VW franchise in Osbourne Park, there may be others, i cannot advise on costs etc as i only have the older air cooled variety of VW. There are quite a few VW's around ( the water cooled variety) so i'm guessing servicing/parts isn't an issue but regarding price, i would be prepared for a shock because if its like anything else here it will be expensive. I would personally consider selling yours in UK, keeping the cash, convert to OZ $ and see what you can get over here. I would think you are talking around £5k to get it over here and legal on road. If i was to have brought my VW Kombi over the oz government wanted more in TAX than i paid for it in UK, let alone the cost of shipping it and getting it inspected.

I haven't no! Its a bit of a trek for me to go and oggle at it tho. Maybe i could take my wife on a shopping trip and have a butchers at it. I have seen some for sale in the USA going for over $200,000!

Slight correction, it's Budget.

Can kinda see it here.

Don't think Perth has heard of TVR or AJP engines so not sure how you will get on with parts and servicing.

There are a few about, but an I6 is an I6 .. I recon it'd be just as hard to get parts in the UK now.

I'm sure if you get down to Cars & Coffee in Freo you'll see at least one.

I always wanted a Sagaris, and prices seem to be climbing in the UK.

I believe there is one in Aus, out in Sydney. I'd love one (with an LS engine swap).
