SaffanZimbo
OH has been sending his CV out via SEEK.com, hays etc and has had 1 response from a group called Mining Australia asking him to pay $240 for them to register him on their books so that they can start looking at roles for him. Has anyone heard of them? I find it strange they want $'s before registering him for roles.
Guest Guest6235
I've heard something like this before on PP but can't remember if it was for mining. I would be very dubious, I think before someone said it was a scam. I think they rely on people desperate for work.
Druid
Sounds like a con, mining is a bit slow at the moment, they will have thousands of applications most with Aussie experiance on the books, i wouldnt waste the money, wifey found out agencies are a waste of time here in Perth, they all want you on the books, but thats were it ends, 2 years later still waiting for a call from an agency, in the meantime she got a job on her own 2 years ago

verystormy
I reiterate my advice on the other post. I would not touch them.
Plimthing
Would you pay to be on someones books in the UK? Sounds dodgy to me. Mining is slowing down at moment everyone is looking at cutting costs left right and centre. My company stopped flying to 2 mines this week. Weedolly
Do not pay them anything. Probably most of the jobs you will get on seek anyway.
verystormy
I know he is struggling to find work, but it does take time and 10 applications isn't actually many, particularly for the first job in WA. I personally would recommend him not to be looking too much at mining roles as he will be up against a lot of competition from guys with mining experience and mines always prefer mining experience. Pat the moment there is a strong down turn in mining and companies are being very tight on the criteria for employment for the few positions that are out there. At the moment everyone is watching the iron ore price as it is already low enough to cause a lot of the smaller mines to close and not far away from causing the mid size mines to close. If if he really does want to look at mining then the best site is infomine. It does charge to get full access to all the jobs, but it's only about $10 a month and can be cancelled any time. SaffanZimbo
Thanks all for your replies. OH has really been stressing as since he qualified in 1995 he's never been out of work for more than 2-3 weeks. He is staying with good friends but it as home with his mate's wife whilst he does FIFO. His mate flew back in this evening and we SKYPE'd and between us we got OH to agree to chill take a few days down time and in the meantime I'll book him on EWP and Working at Heights, Confined Space Working, First Aid courses as his UK qualifications don't seem transferrable. verystormy
Yes and getting worse. The iron ore price has continued to slide, 2015 is looking like it will be a very bleak year for the industry.

P1999
hi stormy, is this still the case with the mining industry ? is it still slow ? thanks ! yes it's true, hundreds if not thousands are loosing jobs because of falling prices.. It's slowing down big time hence the slowdown in the economy and more places up for rent. The bloke next door has reduced the rent by $50 a week and still can't rent it out.. It's been empty for 4 months.. Unheard of in the past
elfie
hi stormy, is this still the case with the mining industry ? is it still slow ? thanks ! Mostly iron ore mines have had the lay off of staff, as the price has dropped dramatically. This could also be partly due to the Chinese stock pile. The workforce tends totakes a downward trend over the Xmas period leading up to and afterwards.. Gold sites tend to remain more stable with the workforce. The person seeking work what is their profession this also may have something to do with the lack of responses, could be that at this moment there is a surplus presently

verystormy
This is the current state of play: around 10,000 job losses to date the iron ore price is currently at about $65. This is below the production cost for everyone except Rio and BHP. Even these will be making large cost savings in the coming year. Likely to see more job cuts Gold is just below $1200. The average cost base for most producers is about $1500. A number are starting to struggle Nickel, recently had a good run after exports were reduced from Indonesia. However, the price has fallen back and a number are expected to close. Lead, struggling and both of the major mines have a number of problems and made redundancies a week before Christmas. The concensus is that unless there is some extraordinary luck in the coming couple of months it will be a blood bath for jobs as many mines are buring cash to stay afloat. verystormy
Will add: The most iconic mine in WA - super pit - and a huge employer will come to natural end of life in 2015 when resource is exhausted.

I thought it was 2030? Saw something about it a couple of weeks ago and they were saying there's at least another ten years in it.
verystormy
No. The mining finishes 2015. The mill will continue producing from already mined stockpiles for 15 - 20 years. But the mill employs only about 100 staff.

IRP
Do not pay to register with an agency!! And make sure they have suitable jobs too. It is worth registering as we often fill roles without advertising but definitely worth getting a feel for whether they have similar roles available. We have mining roles available now. http://www.irp.net.au/job-search/job-details.php?Driller%27s+Offsiders+%28Underground%29+-+Multiple+Opportunities/in/Kalgoorlie%2C+Goldfields+and+Esperance/6007993 Good Luck Luke
