Rossmoyne
Make your house unappealing to burglars, they'll go elsewhere. Totally agree with that Bibbs. I have a visible, monitored alarm system and all my windows have security screens and locks. Front door is double locked and I have Crimsafe security doors back and front. Garage door always closed and locked unless going in and out. I also have a dog who barks if anyone he doesn't know comes near the house. Friends have told me I am a bit anal about security, but I used to be married to a copper who moved into the security arena, and I do live alone, so I need to feel safe. Just for the record, my house in UK was like Fort Knox too! It is all about stopping the opportunist thief as they are just looking for an easy life. Guest Guest6235
Yeah we are like that in the UK but I'm guessing we won't be able to alter things at a rental property.

Guest Guest6235
Were crimerates your only/foremost reason to move? Wow never heard of that No my friend, but surely when you move somewhere it's a consideration & something you ask questions and try and find as much info as possible about. JenPen
Aaaaah your thread has really got me thinking! I live about 30mins from a city....I went there yday left a joules coat on seat....a kids bag on the back, an umbrella a few other bits here and there. I would normally leave it in car when I got home but I took them in haha!! I often do the school run (walk about 5 mins to school) and I'm gone about 20mins and often leave the house unlocked hahaha!!! I'll be less relaxed now in preparation!!! But that's pretty normal around here! Xx

elfie
~Its a fairly safe area I live thankfully as on my own for 2 weeks when hubby is away at work. Am not a nervous person never have been. But I do not go out at night well after dark I do not feel safe here. I have an alarm system, that goes on every time I go out and at night also a Rottweiler who is very protective an alert oh and a baseball bat. Come in at your peril ......... personally id fear the mad welsh woman with the baseball bat But yes seriously the crime is more violent and no doubt the stats would link it to the drug use which is rife in Perth or again the huge divide between wealthy and not so wealthy of which there is a huge divide
FOL
No my friend, but surely when you move somewhere it's a consideration & something you ask questions and try and find as much info as possible about. Sorry, it was early, I read your last line as " It really shows why going somewhere new to live when there are scumbags everywhere." As a more useful contribution to this thread from me so far... I almost panicked when I started doubting if I locked up the sidedoor to the kitchen when we were already 2 hours on our way to esperance. Driving back would mean a delay of almost 4 hours + we would hit traffic making it even longer. When we came back we discovered I locked up anyway hehe. portlaunay
VS and I always seem to get mixed up on here. I promise we're different people. Anyway, it was me who was broken into early one Sunday morning a couple of months ago. We have an alarm on the house, locks on all the windows and doors, PIR lights everywhere and security screens on the front of the house. We were a little naive though. The block next to us is being built on so is completely open. We left our light on all night so the kids can get up to use the toilet. The north side of the house is just one big bank of windows, my wife left her handbag on the floor right next to the window and just outside the window was a large metal sculpture. So, some opportunist scouts the building site next door, hops over the fence, sees the bag and thinks all his Christmases have come at once. Our dog was so terrified by the pounding on the window that she curled up in the shower and wouldn't come out. We now have a proximity alarm on the back of the house and the most amazing CCTV. It's unlikely he'll come back and the added security is really to reassure the kids. Bad things happen every day. This really is no biggie. Plimthing
I was never worried about crime at home, and yet i am here! Maybe because its highlighted more on social media and tv and stuff it just appears to be worse in oz. Or maybe its just the laws of probability that make you more likely to be a victim in oz? Nutnudger
I am Nutnudgers OH and I am Australian. I grew up in Roleystone in the hills which I lived until I was 23 then to Moora until 25. We never had any crime near us or were burgled. I then went to London and lived in Walthamstow where I felt safe. On moving to Manchester, our first night in our house, our car was burgled. I never felt safe there again. On coming back to Australia 2 years ago and re-settled in Roleystone we feel safe once again and not had a problem with crime.

But I guess that is pretty prevelant anywhere these days unfortunately. Er and I am quaking in my boots at the thought of you and a baseball bat supported by Ebbz the wonder-dog!! cocolevi
When my oh garage got burgled back on n the summer it freaked me out for a while wouldn't keep any windows be open at night, double checked windows and doors every time we went out. I'm not so bad now. We know who done it he admitted it to my oh but police say not enough evidence (even though his dna on a window and crow bar he left behind) what can you do. Guest Guest6235
I must admit some of the stories we've looked at on the Internet about the crime in Perth & surrounding areas has really worried us. It's probably the first thing we should have researched instead of the cost of living ha ha. Some of the minor stories but maybe the most common are families returning to cars after a day at the beach and found car windows smashed (would thieves go nicking baby car seats), a family having small rocks thrown at their house windows to see if they were in, somebody knocking on their front door whilst someone else tries to break in round the back. We've ploughed so much money into this & my wife handed in notice to take up new position in Mindarie that we feel we need to give it a go. Is it really any different to anywhere else. The whole idea of going abroad was to be outside more but what's the point if you're wondering if someone is breaking in back home. Whilst I'm finishing typing this my wife's just reeling off a list of crimes at place near Hull & one of the comments was somebody always locks their doors even during the day now as they are sick of scum just walking in! (We lock doors all the time anyhow)What do you do for the best. Edited October 18, 2014 by Guest6235

I haven't experienced any crime myself and I can count on 1 hand the number of people I actually know who have been burgled or had their car broken into. You need to put things in perspective and chillax.
Guest Guest6235
Thanks Arwen, that's probably good advice, I think some of these things have me worked up a bit & my stomach is doing somersaults. Guest Guest13452
Keefo, when you guys get there, I know you'll realise that it's a lovely place and just like anywhere else, there is crime, but you just play it safe like I'm sure you and your wife always do, and your focus will be on living your new lives, not what could potentially happen.
JenPen
@Keefo do you know what it never even occurred to me and now I'm nervous about it! I didn't assume it to be a high crime place when I visited and I'm worried about all these drugs....more when my babies are teens....maybe I'm naive to think it's not hr everywhere! But there is scum and filth and drugs etc in every corner of every street in every place you could live in the whole world we just don't know about it.... But these stories scare me. I've been a victim of attempted theft of a nice car wen I was younger - the gang followed me everywhere, they would cruise down my street late at night... I used to chain my car it scared me so much I sold it...this was in a wealthy very nice part of the country with low crime rate (it still is) so I believe it can and does happen everywhere but I worry to what extent. I worry so much that this worries me more ha! I need to take 20 deep breaths guys ya!?
Guest Guest6235
Sorry to have worried you Jen, I've never really noticed it discussed much on here and if it has I've missed it. I think it's a lot to do with the fact we've really looked into it the last few days. This has led us into looking at crime around our area and random places around England and they are not the best. It's probably to do with moving to a strange area.
JenPen
No really don't worry lovely it's fine, I'd never taken it into consideration as I just got the feeling of safety when I was there....everywhere has negatives and crime it's not a Nirvana on all the senses and I'm not that naive to think it is...it's good to think about it! Where is the least crime then?
