Did/Would you give up your UK passport?

Back to passports....

This is a strange question to me because it is something I had never even considered. I just presumed you kept both. As a citizen of both the UK and Oz (I'm not yet), I thought you had to keep both. If you chose to relinquished one, I presumed it meant that you were turning your back on your homeland and rejecting where you came from. I didn't really think that it was just a piece of paper that allowed you to 'pass port' without question. To me, it symbolises my identity, acknowledges where I came from and where I developed my values and traditions from. It is something I am proud of.

I think if I decided to let it lapse, but knew I could always get it back, it wouldn't be a problem. However, if you said I had to make a decision whether to relinquish it or not and only keep an Oz one, then I would feel very uncomfortable. You would be asking me to give away my rights and privileges. A British passport is a valuable thing, you only have to see how many people are trying to get one from around the world.

Whether or not a renewal of a passport means you are turning your back on being British or you just see it as a 'pass port' document seems to be the bigger question.

Interestingly, I asked my daughter (19) how she would describe her Nationality and she said A British born Australian.

You know when you check in at a hotel, and they take your passport .. a few times I've been close to not getting it back.

Never had a hotel take my passport and would never let them! No-one has the right to keep your passport!

Porty interesting question from you - as a dual citizen you do not need to give up one passport for another as a UK citizen unlike some other nationalities

Like you dxbox I have never had a hotel take my passport... look at it yes, but never take it. And Australia does not expect its Citizens to give up their previous passports/citizenship when they become Australian Citizens.

When we went to Spain they took our passports off of us, it scared me a bit I though we wouldn't see them again. We didn't feel comfortable with this so a bit later we asked for them back

I will definitely keep my UK one going. Not for any sentimental or patriotic reason. Purely that it is not only a means to "Queue jump" at Heathrow but as an EU passport it's also an easy way into other EU countries.

When we eventually go back to UK I don't intend it to be an endless round of relative visiting. I want to be able to use the opportunity to go and do things that we didn't when we lived there. And that may include travelling to Europe. Without a UK passport you waould have to apply for visas for every country you wanted to go to.

Not due our Aussie passport for 6 months but I'll defo renew my UK passport at least once. My daughter I'll renew and encourage her to do the same... oh and to travel. You only appreciate WA when you've lived in the real world. I can not substantiate the reasons to renew, but as I often have to hand the passport in when travelling and staying in hotels, a spare might come in handy. LOL

Never had mine taken away.... yes everyone wanted to look at it and photocopied the bio page, but it was always given back to me.... er just wondering where you stayed Bibbs...

From dodgy hotels in Barcelona, to major ones in Vegas. I think the only places that didn't care were the Psycho-esque motels or the big chains like Hilton/Marriot.

Ooh, er missus, alright, no need to brag, this thread was about passports remember.

Not a brag really. Some of the places were horrendous.

But to get back on topic, a passport for me is just a means of getting in/out of a country. I let my Australian expire for 10 years. I only renewed it once I started travelling more, and wanted insurance.

I know people who do a lot of travelling in the middle east need two as well, for some countries don't like visits to other countries.

I was lowering the tone to gutter level, I wasn't meaning how well travelled you had been. Sorry, I'm clearly in a completely different mindset.

I knew where you were coming from Porty, I'm at that gutter level! Have you got Somerset wives in the planner?

Ahh, I only skim read that and missed it.

And my point in that case still stands.

It's not a brag, some were horrendous.
